Yeah but you're ruling out inflation, the minimun wage today is higher than in our times. I remember a Genesis+SegaCD combo was $500, and games were $60. Now you get new games for $20 (madden for example) something completely out of the question when I was a kid. Yeah me too, my dad was sooo piss off that one day he went to the store, bought a new Tv and gave me the old one. Too bad he doesnt get that mad nowadays:lol:
Funny, I'm always saying the PS2's vast mayority in the market is due to GTA and people always tells me I'm dead wrong with that... Back to the subject, honestly I dont know how sony could fuck things more than they are now.
Well, i disagree with you in that. Although GTA3 and GTA Vice City probably sold lots of PS2's, you can't deny that the PS2 has the most variety of games of any type.
Isnt that like a paradox? I mean, I say people always do that, and you went and did it, but would you had done that if I didn't make that comment before? Man I need a beer...
No, no and double-no! This generation will not be a doomed one. It will just be a stale one where only the PC and Nintendo and possibly the X360 will be the only ones that will come out with innovative games.
Just wanted to post my humble opinion. Even though you already said people do that, most people don't explain why. "PS2 OWNZ ALL WITH GTA' isn't a good point of view. You answer reminds me of: Oracle: Ohh, what's really going to bake your noodle later on is, would you still have broken it if I hadn't said anything? :katamari:
To answer the original question, I doubt this generation will be "Doomed", it'll simply be the one where Sony falls from their learship position in the industry. Honestly I think this generation we will see far fewer people taking sides. It'll probably end up a little closer to the general electroncs market, where as some people will prefer their game console to be made by company X, but most will just go for what grabs their attention first at the store as opposed to whats the current 'in' product.
Sorry to say this, but GTA isn't an XBOX exclusive. per ign: " The only other piece of information concerns the release date. GTA 4 will ship simultaneously for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 on October 16, 2007. In Europe, the game will ship on October 19, 2007. "
I must say I was most impressed with Nintendo's press conferance at E3 than the others, it felt really innovative. I also liked the joke Reggie Fils-Aime made about Wii: "We'd like to thank everybody who said good things about the name after it came out.... Both of you". But yes, Sony are going to have to pretty much rely on their previous fans this time, unlike with the PS1 and PS2, where they were still trying to grab fans from other consoles. Though the PS2 probably spoiled them in that respect because of the PS1's fanbase.
I've met stacks of people with a PS2, and only a few of them didn't buy it for GTA. Other games came along, it could play their old games, great. GTA was the killer app. To be honest I'm surprised they're not paying for at least a year of exclusivity. I suppose getting into a bidding war with Microsoft is pricey.
but the xbox360 version will have exclusive bonus downloadable features. You can imagines cars, new missions and such here.
Yes I was surprised that Nintendo stole the show at E3, which kinda made me happy! Then I heard GTA was coming straight to the 360 and I thought wow!!! So Sony are definitely in a bit of trouble there. I think MS might actually get to dominate this generation, but the PS3 will sell it does have its exclusives and not to mention Final Fantasy. This generation isn't doomed developers just haven't utilised the hardware properly yet. They need to make games look good on normal TVs! Because going hi-def is expensive and I've heard a lot of people say 'the games just look the same'. So now we just sit and play the waiting game!
You know, what really strikes me as extremely sad, is the fact that this generation could be decided by who gets such utter and absolute shit as GTA. If at least this generation would be defined by a Final Fantasy title, like the 32 bit era...
It's not doomed. Prices will fall and both Microsoft and Sony have stated (no source, sorry) that this generation will last longer than those in the past. The prices for the PS3 and XBox360 seem high, but many seem to forget the prices of the Saturn and PS when they were first released. They're not as high as this generation, but I paid £350 for my PlayStation (with Ridge Racer) back at launch and that seemed a hugh initial outlay. In terms of all you get for the money then it's a bit on the steep side, but for the upper teen - mid 20's market who have a high disposable income and are the main market Sony and Microsoft are aiming to attract, it's not such a massive hurdle when you look at the graphical step and the franchises that are following. If you were someone going into the HD era fresh, without a HD TV, then it's a huge outlay to get the most of your new gaming set up. That is something that hasn't been fully considered by either MS or Sony I suspect. I think both companies will lose a lot of money this generation, but that is one of the reasons both say it will last longer probably. Will they ever be able to make a profit from hardware sales? It's going to take developers a long time to push either system, that's for sure. I expect Microsoft to end up top in the USA and Sony to be top in Europe and Japan. No doubt Nintendo will do well if the price of the Wii is low, a lot of people will buy the console as a second machine. I don't think the retro download thing will really appeal to the mass market, especially if Microsoft and Sony offer a large library of downloads on their online marketplaces. One prediction I will make is that the difference in userbase between Microsoft and Sony will be greater this generation due to the cost of each machine - it'll only be the hardcore gaming audience that will fork out for both machines. That means that potentially one or the other will get hurt badly this generation depending on who is the most successful and gets the widest publishing support, because people will select one or the other as their machine and stick to it. Sony are including the Blu-ray player feature as well, which has made the PS3 even more expensive but will attract people debating over which machine they should buy and the Japanese aren't interested in the XBox360, which means Japanese developer and publisher support will be low.
I agree on the GTA thing. It is kinda pathetic. While I agree that MS probably won't get anything accomplished in Japan, I must point out that the 360 exclusive Blue Dragon is one of the top 5 most anticipated games in Japan. If Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Lost Planet, tri-Ace's RPG, etc. get gleaming reviews from Famitsu.... I think it could turn things around for ole' MS. Though Virtua Fighter 5 and Final Fantasy remaining PS3 exclusives is definitely a blow against the 360. And what the hell is up with Squeenix anyways? Weren't they in love with MS at the last big gaming show? Granted, I think Nintendo is going to run away with Japan. They're implementing the exact same strategy with the Wii that they did with the DS... even going as far as to give some huge DS titles a new life on the Wii. Given how much of a run away success the DS is in Japan... and given the price of the Wii... I think Nintendo has a shot to take the Japanese market back. I doubt the Wii will do much of anything in Europe or America though.
I really think Wii is the trojan horse. It could explode in America and Europe just as easily. It's the first games console I've seen where I could genuinely imagine my parents playing (without laughing at the image) due to the intuitiveness of the controller.
You know, I don't like GTA either, but when I play it I can't deny all the work, ideas and imagination that went into making the game. Why is that when something goes mainstream is tagged as "shit"? is that envy? Honestly FF blows, the entire franchise is nothing but a big-ass milk cow. FF8 was sold only based on CG screenshots, now that's a shame.
Shadowlayer, I've played both, and I can't disagree with you more. I simply cannot find enough innovation in GTA. I did like the setting in Vice City a lot. Maybe FF8 was sold on screenshots, but there's a hell of a lot more game under them than there is game under the "OMG!!!1 NUDITY AND VIOLENCE!" approach to sell GTA games. There really isn't a great game inside all the GTA hype, even if there is an open environment and a "mature" storyline and all that shebang. But then again, different people have different tastes, so I respect your opinion.
Dude if people go and buy the game to engage in random mayhem instead of actually playing the massion that's not the developers fault. On the other hand GTA has some of the most acid and intelligent jokes about society seen in a game, but if the kid doesnt pay attention to that well bad luck. And about FF, dude we all know that series has a HUGE appeal among anime obssesive people and the emo-kind. So, what the difference? that FF is a fundamental part of the old-school culture? that just becos you (and a millon more) are old today, but what about all those kids playing GTA right now? I tell you what, 10 years from know they'll be the gamers, and forums everywhere will be full of rants about how games today suck and none is even near the share greatness GTA had. Is just the point of view...
