I'm pondering my next Console perchase. I finally got the Griddle/Dreammachine that is the PS4 (I swear you can fry an egg on that thing) and I'm pondering what's next. PSVR or XBOX ONE. But when I really think of it 100 Foot Robot Golf is hardly a reason to spend $300-50o. Rez Infinite will work just fine without VR. The Occulus and the HTC whatever it is are $500 and $800 each and that isn't counting the beast rig required to run them.

As somebody in their 30s who was around for the 90s VR Hype Train when VR was a world of blocks I'm ready for VR....but the hype is dying down. If the PSVR is priced around the other two headsets, Then....... I'll probably get an XBONE as the year nears it's end.

Still too early. Hardware is too expensive.

I sill have my VR headsets from the 1990's and 2000's and they were bitter disappointments really.

$700 is far beyond most people. It needs to hit $300 or less.

I think they're having an event for the PSVR this week, but maybe that's another VR system.

I could see VR being used for specialty purposes, like simulators, and obviously gaming, but I don't think it's going to replace the TV. It seems like the only TV upgrades that stick are increased refresh rates and resolution.

Eh, goes without saying that being an early adopter isn't a good idea, but as far as these things are concerned, that's more true than usual IMO. I'd be very surprised if the PSVR gets any significant support.

I feel like for the most part it's just a gimmick that I don't really care about. I'll probably still enjoy using it but I don't see myself plopping down that much money on something like that. I still use my novint falcon every once in a while when playing an old game just to see what it's like.

IMO, it'll die quietly. There were originally these big reveals and promises, but they simply can't be delivered. You have to throw ~$800 for a VR headset currently, and then you have to spend another $1200(-ish, maybe a little less) just to get a PC that can support it. The technology for it needs to become cheaper, because eventually people will loose interest and remember that mouse and keyboards work perfectly fine, as do regular old TVs and monitors.

I think it'll be different this time. If they can get the technology right and at the right price the possibilities of VR are pretty much endless. The porn industry alone is probably enough to sustain it... Even if it ends up being the preserve of high end PC enthusiasts for a few years (in the same way things like 4k gaming and trackIR etc are now) im sure its here to stay.

It certainly won't be a 3D situation; the human eye isn't meant to view things that way. I think it will be a decent novelty once it gets to be more inexpensive, and certain genres' will be able to utilize it well. It will then slowly become a niche market with a cult following. We shall see.

I'd be surprised if it didn't get significant support. I don't know what the price point/release date is (developers also have to wait for the upcoming events and press releases to find out), but I expect it to be the cheapest non-phone option and it is not a slouch performance wise.

The only thing that I see causing VR to tank this time around is "bad" support. That is, everyone trying to shoe-horn VR into FPS games. VR works best when the player moves with the virtual avatar, and walking/running style FPS's won't work well.

I think what would kill VR now is if the different standards (Oculus, PSVR, Vive, etc) are all so different that making software that will work with different ones will be too hard for devs to do. If each standard has completely exclusive software (or even minimally cross-platform support) less people will be inclined to jump on.

Most people will be using Unity or Unreal, so a lot of games will be able to run on multiple platforms.

I don't think it will catch on at all, just don't see it.

Have you tried one of them (not a phone-based one though) yet?

I've owned an original rift, just couldn't use it without getting headaches. I'm curious to know if the higher resolution and head tracking helps with this issue.

If I can get one of these working on my head without getting dizzy count me in. I'll be in a race car all day

The primary problem is high resolution, high dpi screens with refresh fast enough to prevent motion sickness.

We're still 5-10 years from those not being excessively expensive.

The occulus and vive are lower than 500ppi, the human eye needs at least 2200ppi

Needs 2200ppi for...what? Clarity? Sure, it helps to have higher resolutions, but it certainly isn't required for motion sickness. The refresh rate and movement latency is much more important.

I haven't. Last VR I used was 15+ years ago, pretty sure the sensation of VR is the same, just it's gotten visually clearer.

I doubt I'll ever get into VR because every headset that I've seen refuses to accept that people out there wear glasses. Yes as a nearsighted person I could probably get by, but I'm reeeeaaaalllly nearsighted.
