Same here, Mac desktop and ubuntu laptop. I love having computers that work for me and dont require pointless maintenance. Windows 8, waaayyy too soon. 7 is too recent and really, is their best work since the nt system. Full microsoft OS pricing, plus early release, plus new supposed gui equals potential fail.

Another Os to mess everything up with.
    Netbook runs Linux Mint
    Desktop runs Lion

So long as there is a hole in my ass I wont be buying Microsoft.

Look at the Windows release schedule. 3.1 was 1992. Windows 95, 98, ... don't need to explain those. XP was 2001. so we are looking at a typical 3 years for a Windows version to remain 'current'. XP was an anomaly though- it was on the market for way too long without a successor and became entrenched; these were the years when PCs were hitting it into the mainstream and becoming a staple of every household IMO.

It's nothing out of the ordinary. Don't upgrade if you do not want a new version, simple as. Personally, I think the new interface will simply be a skin on top of Windows, sitting in the way of getting real work done. They should have made a separate Windows OS for tablets imo. I would much rather they work on the damn fit and finish of Windows. Sort out audio playback (EVERY Win7 PC I have used skips and tears when playing audio). Integrate touchpad gestures by default and get rid of shitty synaptics crap. Shed the cruft of the legacy bullshit. Make it damn shine.

I would go to Mac, but the mouse acceleration and keyboard layout kills me. Apple would have another customer if they resolved that.

    Oh, and Vista is fine.

If you have an "older" laptop, you could try Peppermint OS One (Two fucking blows !), Linux Mint LXDE . Both of them are smashing great to try and mess with. Basically check out the specs for either Lubuntu, Peppermint OS One (or Ice if you like Google Chrome) and if you want to try to have both Chrome and Firefox, then go for Peppermint Two, and if you want something recent then go for Linux Mint 11 LXDE. Hell you can not go totally wrong with any LXDE based Linux distro.

I only switched to Win 7 a few months back but I'm very hapy with it. Far faster and easier to use than XP. Saying that I still use XP on the laptop I using now to type this while in work ;) No problems with XP at all but moving to Win7 was a good move for the home PC. Don't want or need Windows 8 at all.

Maybe if all the shit Linux distro's came together (all the ones that really do nothing different some are more unique than others) they could create a competent OS that stood as a serious alternative. Ubuntu is often hit and miss with drivers.

I am not going into the whole drivers shit on Linux, cause I am not talking about Ubuntu. Cause I do not personally like the main line of that system. So let us skip to the main point of my almost anti Microsoft and so forth monopoly. I do not like MS , and or for that matter Googles attempt on monopoly/world domination if you will. But what pisses me off is this, Microsoft quite recently hit up a patent about a "fast cloud based OS", which they said was about anti piracy, which sounds "okay". But what irks me is this, how many Linux distros are not in some ways a cloud based system ? So imagine, imagery copyright suites from M$ about "the cloud", and their giant chance of winning ? because of money ? I chose Linux on my mini pc/mini lap/ the big brother of the eeepc, cause Windows XP fucking sucked on the little POS (at the time) machine , but when I then installed Linux, it was an awesome feeling of getting something up and running in no time, and the shit be kicking. I love the awesome choice of so many different distros, you can NOT get with Windows, and if Ubuntu sucks in your opinion, then you check out another OS. In the line of Linux systems, but if that is not your cup of tea, then there is always BSD and its flavours, or Freedos and you fucking name it.

I would recommend switching to 7 for the laptop. I find that it's a big win over XP because it boots up much quicker from a powered-off or hibernate state. Wireless reconnectivity after laptop sleep mode is much improved.

I'm looking forward to trying out 8 when it's out. I'm willing to try new ideas/concepts out.

I think some people mentioned it will run on ARM and other SoC hardware. Windows 7 only runs on x86 class processors so it can't run on say a Tablet running an NVidia Tegra (ARM based) Processor. Windows 8 will run on anything. So you can have the same OS on your PC as you have on your Tablet. That's really the main idea. It's geared towards SoC's and touchscreen devices. Windows 7 has touch abilities but they're added on at the last minute. They basically suck compared to anything that was built from the ground up to use touch screens like IOS or Android. This is competition for that arena.

It's a great idea. Well actually it's pretty much a requirement if MS wants to remain competitive. If anything they're way behind this should have came out last year! Windows 7 is great on a desktop or notebook with a powerful x86 processor but we all know touchscreen devices like tablets are taking over. Not to mention Windows 7 sucks ass on low power portables like an Atom based Netbook. Big OS on little hardware is just a horrible user experience and they really needed something better from the get go.

If anything I think they should have come out with this earlier and called it something other than Windows 8. I mean call it Windows Go, Windows Touch or Windows portable. Anything but Windows 8!

As much as I hate, HATE, to agree with GoH, change for the sake of change isn't always a good thing and too many people are willing to go "oooh, shiny..." nowadays. I make my living in human-computer interaction/usability and I see the reasons why the development team went in this direction, but I think they are idiots for letting it get this far. Windows 8 is first and foremost a tablet OS. That's fine for tablet devices, but sucks for everything else. Look at the feedback that Netflix is getting from their last horrible and misguided redesign, which was intended to make it "better" for touchscreen systems (even though it is much worse for them than pointer based ones).

Simply put, what works for a tablet system cannot and will not always work for a mouse based system. Just for starters, how the hell is the "slide your finger from offscreen" going to even work with a mouse?

In case there is any confusion:
Xbox Live != Xbox 360 on a PC
Xbox Live == Xbox Live services on a PC (e.g. leaderboards, matchmaking, possibly achievements, etc.)
