http://cheats.ign.com/objects/010/010808.html Hmmm, back in the Snes days, Zelda for the NES was remade for the SNES with better graphics. Is this a hoax, hence the name BS Zelda, or, if not, what does it mean?
Satellite thing version, youd download pieces of it over a period of time when they released it. http://bszelda.zeldalegends.net/bszelda.shtml
Yeah, I just read into that. You could only play from 4:00 P.m. to 7:00 P.m. and it only lasted for about a month. Turns out to be a hack or clone of sorts, and cant be played through that service anymore, but through emulation. Dont know why IGN said it was for the SNES, though. I guess cause they didnt read the FAQs section on this game, lol.
The Satellaview was an addon for the SNES that allowed an 'online service' of sorts through a Satellite connection. BS Zelda (can't quite remember what the BS stands for) was released in episodes - 1 dungeon a week (or whatever the play period was), and the character you played was not originally Link, but some Ness-looking kid who was the Satellaview mascot. Apparently the service was discontinued with several dungeons left to go, but you can find the modified ROM on the Intarweb which has the main character changed to Link and the final dungeons in place. Quite a few interesting games were released for the Satellaview, including Radical Dreamers, the visual novel from Squaresoft that was essentially the prototype for Chrono Cross.
Ah! That explains what Radical Dreamers was, now. I was baffled when I first played that game and thought it was some sort of strange hack. I beat Chrono Cross but the story is SOOOOO weird. I know its kind of connected to the first, but how, exactly? Does Radical Dreamers explain it?
There's also a F-Zero 2 and a load of F-Zero specials oh and a Mario excite bike game released over the BS system. In Fact there are 100's of games. Yakumo
There`s also that Chrono Trigger "racing special" and that "soundtrack" thing, right? I'm not sure if you could only play at certain hours, or if you could only download at certain hours. The old Assembler site had some info on the thing. I actually came across Assembler.roarvgm.com (hence, the forums) looking for info on the Satellaview. I think there are units around even now with games on them. Not sure, though.
Bandai has nothing to do with it, it's "Broadcast Satellaview." There are actually around 30 original titles if you don't count downloadable magazines and most of them are already dumped. Since practically nobody has populated memory carts, nobody can redump to verify the released game's integrity. Also from what I understand there is a missing chapter in BS Zelda 1 game, so all of the "full" games floating around are user-hacks.
the last dungeon wasn't revealed, and there was a time limit. Somone managed to remove the time limit and found the last dungeon lost somewhere in the code, so you can play it entirely now, if i'm not mistaken.
You still see populated BS cards from time to time, particularly on YH! Japan (and hardly ever on eBay).
I don't think the last dungeon(s, I always heard the game stopped around 6) were 'lost in the code' - the service cut out before they could be downloaded, so it would be mighty bizarre to find unreleased levels hidden in current code. The story I had always heard was that the same group responsible for breaking the time limit and changing the Satellaview mascot to the Link sprite also hacked in the last few dungeons using tilesets from BS Zelda and the 'floor plan', as it were, from the original. And yeah, the Chrono Trigger minigame where you kept racing Johnny in the future was also a Satellaview download. Mr. Casual: I haven't finished Radical Dreamers, so I couldn't tell you if Chrono Cross makes more sense afterwords. I think Chrono Cross extends quite a bit past the end of Radical Dreamers, though.
I dont remember the story, exactly, but Chrono Cross was wayyyyyyy out there. Wasnt the boss in chrono trigger the destructor of time, and the boss of CC related to him as the destrutor of space? It would be cool if a 3rd one were made, and Chrono and everyone else from trigger joined with Serge, Kid, and MAYBE 1 more person, but no 50, lol. :smt042 To defeat another Lavos which is the destructor of time and space.
well, the story could be wrong, but i'm pretty sure you can now play in the last levels with some hacks. there's even some photos taken from emulators where you see the game's last moments. i forgot where though.
I have the rom version of that game BS Zelda game, but sadly the title screen doesn't even appear, & I see Link in a field for 1 sec then the time goes off and the rom ends.
Actualy, The last level was never finished for BS Zelda. The one available in certan versions of the rom is a fan made recreation of the final dungeon from the original Zelda. They used various tiles in BS Zeldas code to make it. I do not recall if they actualy had to make anything from scratch or not. As for the whole thing about Bandai, if you'l notice in the un-hacked versions of the rom Link is not present at all, and instead has been replaced by a selectable boy and girl. Those two characters are supposedly old Bandai mascot characters. Also, as for the '4-7pm only' thing, from what I recall the game ran on a clock (non-internal), which limited the player to 59(min) and 59(sec) before the game would stop working. Its been a few years sense I researched it though, so I might be a bit off.
I have a rom version that runs on certain emulators No music though, im not sure that it had it originally. No link either, it was something else hehe
