Best idea might be to wire a DB9 connector onto the back of the Dreamcast and build specific adapters to plug into it. But if all you're after is SD card usage then this is probably overkill. Personally I hate how little space there is inside the Dreamcast and short of getting some high end equipment every time I mod one of these I make sure I still have spare cases on hand. Place that VGA connector a bit too far one way or the other and you'll find it bumping into the GD-ROM casing or wiring getting in the way of the lid detection switch.
So I got my Dreamcast from them in the mail today. I got the one with the built in stuff, like the picture in the OP. At first, I was able to get DreamShell to boot correctly. However, I was unable to boot any ISOs. Kept basically resetting. I tried some stuff (different DS versions, etc). Now, I can't even boot DreamShell. At all. It tries to boot DreamShell & it just freezes at the DreamShell screen. Also, I paid for the version that's supposed to read discs... and mine doesn't. Not happy.
Could be the actual SD-ISO images you're using? Apparently, some of the main sites for "obtaining" the images don't work correctly with Dreamshell, as they have an incorrect IP.BIN or something? The ISO images need to be in the SD-ISO format AFAIK, or they won't boot under Dreamshell. Is your SD adapter a pre-made one, like the ones from China which use an SD card reader shell? You might need to try some different SD cards, but Dreamshell is generally quite forgiving. I've found that 2GB cards often work better than >2GB (SDHC) on a lot of stuff. My Dreamshell setup has fairly long wires going to the SD slot though, and it still works fine. It just has a small cap across the power pins, and a few pull-up resistors on the relevant signals. I do use a Flash BIOS mod with the "DS with BIOS" Flash image though, so it loads DS directly from the SD card when I power-up. Let us know which type of SD reader you have, or post a pic. We might be able to help. OzOnE.
You need at least a class 6 SD card, but I'd recommend class 10 on Dreamshell 4.0 RC1. DS 4.0 Beta 4 doesn't care as much. Most of the SD-ISO files on say iso-zone, they were made for Dreamshell Beta 4 not RC1 and won't work. Here's a compatibility list http://www.dc-swat.ru/forum/thread-1329.html
Has anyone ever seen a XCKDIY Dreamcast in person? They showed up on Taobao about 3-4 years ago when the initial Dreamcast-related SD card breakthroughs came about but it seems that they have vanished into thin air. I'm kicking myself for not buying one when I had the chance to. It seems to be the closest thing there is to a DreamX DC.
Hello Everyone! I placed my order about two days ago after doing some extensive research online. At first there was only 1 other thread than from here that gave a credible answer and that they had recieved they're sd adapter from DC-SD.com considering how cheap, I purchased just one sd-card and 1 VGA cable.. and by my calculations 47isCool's items took about a month to get to him.(standard when buying from Hong Kong) to the USA. I was very tempted to buy 2 just in case 1 didn't work and a working GD-ROM Dreamcast with built in SD..I didn't have to wait another month to receive it again. I'm kinda glad i didnt now considering The Bear's was non working. but i may just order a non working one anyways in the future to mod out. Whats the story with yours TheBear? I think the best way to get in contact with them would be through paypal. I will let everyone know how my experience goes. and anyone know where I can find a dreamcast revision A modem?
I think "The Bear" was trying to boot Dreamshell with a an SD-HC card. These will not work and a standard 2GB card needs to be used. SanDisk works best IMO. However the DC-SD rip works just fine my 8GB SD card and it's not even SanDisk. From my experience DreamShell as a loader has probably the lowest compatibility. Even though Swiss for GC is newer it's much better. Running the Sonic Adventure 2 demo on Dreamshell is pretty laggy and not worth the trouble. However, SA2B on Swiss (again non-SanDisk SD-HC) loads levels faster than the GC or Wii does from disc
Dreamshell should work with SDHC cards. If you're using 4.0 RC1 (not Beta 3 or 4) you need a class 6 or higher card though.
I believe this is the issue I had with my SD Adapter on RC1 but on beta 4 it booted fine. I guess I need a class 6 to use RC1.
so it's been one week since i have ordered my things from dc-sd. i give it 2 weeks. Besides all this dc-sd stuff. Anyone familiar with setting up a PC-DC server under crunch bang with a usb Modem? I am following guides online but im a bit stuck. I have all the necisarry software/hardware. just cant dial in.
I haven't seen one in person, but that's mainly because I never needed one. I've spoken with XCKDIY personally, but that was only for DC SD card related business (I previously sold his DC SD card readers, ensuring that I could sell cheaper than everyone else - Including DC-SD.com): But outside of that, I never really asked him about his modded consoles. I've seen images of his work, but shipping kills the deal for most everyone outside the few hardcore of collectors/fans.
Well two weeks after ordering my item from DC-SD I got an email saying it was shipped. However when i view my order details on their website it still shows as processing. Anyways after doing all this research ive managed to build one myself, PAH. Though cutting a slut for the sd reader and soldering the inside of my dreamcast is just too much extra work for me. They are apparently sold out of the pre-mod. so I think that just may be the last of those. Anyone know where else I could purchase a Dream shell Mod Chipped Dreamcast? I just might have to do it myself. =/
yeah its a nice thing to have, some games work great others, so so. bu tfor the price i can't really complain and it saves the lasers life
