How society views a word must be taken into account, something that may offend an English man might not offend an American. Wheelaa you need to understand that words are viewed differently in different parts of the world. I hate to fall back on such an example, but the N word is a fine example of this. Living just outside of Atlanta for most of my life I can say that that word has been integrated into most peoples vocabulary and is used in a non offensive way so much that the word has almost lost all meaning. Being the ugly word that the word is it seems quite logical that the usage has changed do to the fact that english is an ever changing language.
I learned recently after a trip to Canada that using the word "Eskimo" is frowned upon. Balance that with the Macedonian guy I know in Australia who thinks it's perfectly fine to call himself and his fellow countrymen "wogs".
I had never realized the word ''retard'' and the related adjective ''retarded'' were that frowned upon. I always considered it rather mild compared to other familiarities and swear words. Of course I live in a french speaking country so I guess that kind of thing can go right over my head, especially with having learned English on the internet.
I have to admit that, when I saw the topic in the latest post field, I was going to reprimand the OP... until I saw who it was! No, he's right. Using a word that defines a group of people as an insult against others who probably aren't part of that group is not OK. http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/retarded even your dictionary says it's offensive: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/retarded Clearly, these people are not less advanced mentally than others their age - they are highly intelligent. It is therefore used as an offensive term. Likewise, saying something is gay when it isn't referring to a homosexual person is a childish insult. However, the N word, whilst it may have been "taken back" as wheelaa said, is only OK when a black person says it to another black person. They wouldn't say it to a white person, and they would be offended if a white person said it to them. Therefore, it is STILL an offensive word, even if it has an acceptable use nowadays. We've pointed out here that Jap is considered offensive to Japanese people in the past. People keep using it here, though - hey, I've got some Jap games for sale. Just because it's mild, doesn't mean you should continue to use it. It's just being ignorant and lazy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jap Gay and retarded are childish terms used in an offensive manner that (American) people are just ignorant about. Don't use the fact that you, your friends or another group of people use a word because you don't realize it's offensive as an excuse to make it OK when it's not.
Well Retard is used in Automotive terms for a slow gearbox. I'd never use the word to describe something slow though, regardless of who or what it is. That's just how I view it though, just a poor choice of words is really the matter here. However yes, it is/can be offensive - I'm sure Kev will change it when he get's around to it.
Actually, when I think of the automotive use of the word retard, I think of retarded ignition, which is changing when the timing between the sparkplug and compression.
Its all related. Retarding the ignition is slowing it down. Just like a slow gear box. Anything that has to do with "slow"
Is it just me or is anyone else more interested in this "counterfeit Xbone" they made?? I want to see what they did?
I thought they just downloaded the software and made a customised Windows install on a regular old PC. Super dumb thing to do especially if one has an interest in computers/games. Now all they'll be able to do with their adult lives is unskilled labour or work in a supermarket.
All this press attention could actually provide them with a wealth of underground career opportunities. If not from US intel, then counter-US intel, or cyber crime rings. It's not like anyone can just put out a want help wanted ad in the newspaper for this sort of job... When will we hear about them again? My guess is when they secretly join ISIS, hack into Facebook's servers to manually post 'another day at the office' selfies and then accidentally expose the intel base because they forgot to turn off location services. By the way, why is the term 'retarted' being so reviled when terms like 'idiotic' and 'stupid' are used so nonchalantly? Don't all of these terms paint the picture of someone resonating mental deficiency of some sort? If anything, many people I've known who were labeled 'mentally challenged' or even 'special' by a monolithic institution tend to have amazingly powerful minds that these institutions fail to see because they assume that those who cannot grasp things in the same manner that they do cannot function properly; making these hive-mind organizations, if anything, the retards for dismissing the amazing potential of a mind that cannot be easily confined by humanity's trite infrastructure (most 'normal' minds are easy to unlock and even easier to influence). Now yes, there are people who do need personal care for life to survive in our half-cold, half-tolerant civilization, but they in turn tend to be some of the nicest people you may ever meet.. They have an inherent innocence and kindness that brighten the room and give people a hopeful outlook on humanity in ways that a psychiatrist with a PhD could never do, even if they researched happiness for another 100 years... haha. Political correction needs to die... It is worse than stereotyping, because it's the same thing, but snowballed with a thinly veiled layer of condescending sensitivity and baseless guilt. It's turned active stereotypes and profiles into even more active and more hostile passive ones that growing numbers of people think but are too afraid to say. This mentality is currently dictating what's healthy, what's good, and what's not.. With the failed intent of making people feel good through a frayed sense of reality and a hierarchy untouched from it's predecessor.
well shiet, they dun goofed. However if it wasn't for the whole US FUCKING ARMY part of this, honestly .. i don't see a single thing wrong with this lol, micro$oft screws us daily. But they just had to mess with the feds huh .. ? oh well, lesson learned right?
Idiots. I never understand what motivates some people, selling fraudulent hardware fair enough, but going to jail for five years for this is almost embarrassing. You'd think if people were going to hack an organization and go to jail for it they'd do something worthwhile like hacking NASA or something, not stealing copies of Call of Duty. What a waste.
They must not have been worried about getting caught, since they apparently did nothing to prevent that. So... it's not surprising that they were caught. I don't see how it could be a surprise to them, either.
Sanadodeh Nesheiwat I can tell you a bit about. His nickname was/is SonicISO or Shuma on here; he was known in the PS3 scene for making fake TEST units (conversions!). He supposedly worked for TX (Team Xecutor) doing prototyping of things like X-NAND. I know from personal interaction he did indeed have knowledge of stuff but honestly, he won't make it in prison; he always talked about killing himself. Feds raided his house about 1-2 years ago for another offense leaving him damn near broke. Just glad none of my interactions came back on me hah. But I can tell you this, Sanadodeh Nesheiwat has NO hacking knowledge, I believe he is just getting the bitch-end of the stick like usual.
