http://www.gamespot.com/news/6139702.html That isn't too bad, actually. 200+ games at launch was far better then the 50 or so games I expected. Although it is missing a few key titles (Prince of Persia 2 and 3, Dead or Alive Ultimate, etc), it seems like most of the major games will be playable. Only downside is the Xbox Live and Disc needed to activate it...
Shenmue 2 not on the list Suprised at there not being many of the popular sports games (Football, baseball, Nascar, though thats probably them making you buy the newest one). Still a decent list though
That's weird, I always thought all newer consoles were backwards compatible with every older console games, such as every Playstation game working on a PS2. I just learned this recently.
No Splinter Cells? So how long until the emulator executable is hacked to allow copied disks/other programs to be able to run on the 360?
Ah yes, instead of killing Terrorist with your best friends, YOU CAN WORK OUT UNTIL THOSE CREAM PIES ARE GONE, MR. FLABBY! Seriously though, I dare say Splinter Cell was a bit more complex then most of the games on the list. I dare say that the 3 Splinter Cell games will be available for use within a few months.
The emulator really should not have anything to do with the game complexity (aside from testing); it really should just be a matter of mapping the Xbox calls to 360 calls. Of course, some developers probably did some nasty hacking at times...
It may just be me, but I knoticed that most of the more graphically dependant games were not on the list. Conker, DoA Ultimate, Doom 3, Prince of Persia 2 and 3, All three of the Splinter Cell games, etc. Maybe some of the lesser graphical games would not need as much emulation as the more graphically demanding games?
I hope the whole list will cross over eventually. I mean, crap, their arent many of the games that I own on that list. It would be cool if you could play TS: FP on the 360, and perhaps the added space and power of the machine could let you make bigger maps / put more items in, etc. Bungie already stated that Halo 1 and 2 run better on the Xbox 360 and have screenshots of the different smoothness comparisons on Xbox and Xbox 360: http://www.bungie.net/images/news/inlineimages/comparison2.jpg Perhaps a graphics boost isnt the only thing that can be upgraded for some of the older Xbox games. The games that require lots of space for user created material for instance. i hope the Xbox 360 can use user created stuff like on a computer. Putting skins on certain games would be cool!
Thank God, "Yourself Fitness" is on the list. Wow, so you're required to download the emulator to the system, burn a CD, or send off for one. I can't wait to see all the yokels who couldn't get their original Xbox on Xbox Live (or couldn't hook it up to their TV for that matter) try to play their old games. "Dude man, it don't play none of my games! I want a refund." No amount of explaining will help. I fear for all retail workers.
Seeing as I thought the system would only have 5-10 xbox titles working at launch, I consider this to be fairly amazing. Still, I did notice that their are quite a few well known and liked games missing from the list (ex: Soul Calibure II, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, Dead or Alive: Ultimate, Conker: Live & Reloaded, Psychonauts, etc.). Also, releasing the emulators using burnable self-booting data essentialy guarantees the system will be hacked (if it hasn't already been, as I stated in another post) very shortly. For microsofts sake, this had better not lead to a similar situation with modchip'less self-booting pirate discs like those that plagued the Dreamcast.
Well, and then there is of course simulating an X86 CPU which is not the easiest of things to do if an individual host processing unit (a PPC core in this case) has only 5 times the clock rate...
...It's nice to see that Half-Life 2 will be compatable with the 360, especially as its yet to be released on the Xbox, lol
I hope this is not the final list because most of the xbox games I actually like are not on that list, tenezerra, DOAU, C.A.T and basically all the unique Japanese games that made me even bother with the xbox anyway. They have got to start showing more respect for the games that actually sell in Japan or it will be xboxone all over again in Japan. Backwards compatability with a bunch of western games does very little for me. Oh and no jet set radio future, now I am mad! Oh and magatama and otogi, absent as well. Well I shall buy a 360 when they sort out the "lack of good games" thing that it has got going on. Apologies for the rant. EDIT - I expect they shall publish a new list for the Japanese market, I hope anyway.
