Sony won't even try to counter it: http://www.vg247.com/2015/06/17/pla...wing-xboxs-lead-with-backwards-compatibility/
If they would've done 100% emulation you wouldn't need to download any data. Potentially they could've done executable binary translator but you can't just automatically convert resources, you need to know what kind of data you're converting and I am sure that game formats varies a lot from game to game.
The guy in that article is full of crap. He said it wasn't made clear how the backwards compatability is done. He must be thick as I found it perfectly clear. He then says ps3 backwards compatability was hardly used. Funny he does didn't mention the PS2 backwards compatability. Maybe because they had no way to do digital release PS1 games back then for a price. Basically, Sony won't do backwards compatability because then they couldn't sell the PS3 games as digital tiles over their many pay to play games you already bought services. That's my take on it, anyway.
How many people actually used BC on the 360 or PS3? I think I used it on the PS3 once or twice and the 360 version was buggy as hell.
They won't do backwards compatibilty because they can't. Emulating the PS3 Cell must be a nightmare they don't want to think about it or even spend money on. They already spent so much money with streaming technology for PSNow, my guess is that they'll add free PSNow titles to PlayStation Plus subscription at the next PlayStation Experience Event. Also, they are probably thinking about PS1 / PS2 emulation available on the PS4 as fast as they can, since a lot of people purchased old digital titles through their PS3s. But for PS3 titles on PS4, PSNow will be the way to go. By the way, i'm really curious to read how Microsoft managed to make it possible.
me, I use it alot on the 360 to play Panzer Dragoon Orta and a few other titles as I never owned an original Xbox nor want one because of the size. Probably the same reason why people would play 360 games on the Xbox One. Johnny, there's a behind the scenes explanation on how the Xbox One backwards compatability works. Basically it is emulation as we know. Games can't run off discs for some reason which it why they are installed like Xbox One games but you will be able to use normal discs. I wonder about the region setting though? Will 360 games now be region free like Xbox One games?
That i understand. You put the disc in, it downloads the Xbox One compatible / emulated version. What i really want to know is how they managed to fully emulate the Xbox 360 and all it's features under the Xbox One. Not only that, you can use Xbox One features for the Xbox 360 games as well. I think this will really help Xbox One sales. Even if consumers sold their Xbox 360 console and physical copies of games, keeping their Xbox Live account will give them access to all of the compatible digitally purchased games again. Curious to see how the list of compatible games will grow. First party Microsoft titles are probably guaranteed. Overall, this is remarkable, specially if we remember the screwed anti-consumer attitude at 2013 when they had when they announced the console. Here's just a small example from Don Mattrick: http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/22/don-mattrick-if-youre-backwards-compatible-youre-really-bac/ Microsoft Xbox Division truly changed from that backlash and with the help of Phil Spencer. PS: You brought an interesting point, what about games from different regions? This is something we'll have to check it as well. Honestly, i doubt they'll add any sort of lock on this.
I hope the 360 stuff becomes region free as I'll finally be able to play Duck Tails and that rambo game
Don Mattrick is what they had wrong. It wasn't the console, it was his speeches and replies to media. "Xbox One is online only, if you want offline, use an Xbox 360" - What knob jockey honestly. Backwards compatibility is a plus for any consumer, it's another feature, can stream the game straight from the Xbox one, features are pretty good.
It was him and the mentality of his Xbox division. As soon as the backlash started, they got rid of him and changed every stupid policy. They still have a stupid one (demanding indies to launch first on the console, making difficult for them to be profitable), but overall they managed to somehow "save" it. Kudos to Phil Spencer and his crew.
FYI: the vast majority of XBLA games are region free, so getting DuckTails on your Japanese unit should not be a big problem. That being said, I do hope for region-free X360 gaming on the Xbox One, that way I can finally play Raiden Fighters Aces and Raiden IV ... if those titles get accepted into the program of course
hmm... thinking about it, if it's exactly like now, there's no reason for other region games to be blocked. I'm talking about XBLA only. We now that these are not blocked, right? And changing regions to pursue deals regarding games ond demand used to be dangerous. So the whole thing is about buying other regions games on demand (based on what's available on the japanese digital marketplace right now).
Well the Cell Processor is a fucking rubicks cube. PS3 emulators ensuring the earliest we get a PS3 Emulator is 2053.
Yeah, PS3 backwards compatibility will have to keep using PSNow. But i still don't get why they don't allow PS1 and PS2 titles to be played on the PS4. They could even add support for PSP games as well. This would ensure people that bought digital titles on PS3 can keep playing them. Also just read that 40% of PS4 owners didn't had a PS3. Xbox One might get some of these people back with Xbox 360 backwards compatibility. http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/...ers-that-didn_2700_t-own-a-playstation-3.aspx
I think PSone games will come eventually, the System Recognizes the discs but won't play them. It's either a Planned feature, or a scrapped one.
I certainly would've liked BC on the Xbox One as I played Witcher 2 in preparation for Witcher 3. EDF2025 being BC would have also been nice. So, yeah, I've still got my Xbox 360 hooked up to play some stuff, and certainly wouldn't mind putting it away.
