My original XBox won't boot at all.Light flashes green when I turn it on but there is no picture or sound.Fan is working as well and console seems to power as well, I think it's HDD or DVD-Rom that makes noise too.I had problems with it before that it wouldn't turn on on first time (boot) but it would again after a couple tries. It was no big deal and I figured out it had something to do with overheating, later I changed settings of fan speed (i think i put 20% or something like that, don't remember) and it didn't have that much problems with booting and overheating anymore. It would boot first time 90% of the time.Yesterday I fired it up to FTP some games over to the HDD and I was playing a bit Black and when I was ingame I figured out I need more space for some more games so I went to delete on game through Filezilla (Psychonauts specifically) while I was ingame (Black).I forgot my XBox is still ingame. But of course since when you're ingame I think you cannot delete HDD contents.Correct me if i'm wrong.Of course Filezilla told me it can't delete it since i'm not connected so I turned off Xbox from game to turn it on again and it didn't want to boot anymore. At all.Not one single try and I tried about 30 times.Today I opened it and cleaned a lot of dust in it.Also checked out all resistors and capacitors for blows and leaks but everything looks fine.I also tried my stock drive instead of 160GB that was in before failure and that one won't boot the console as well.I tried disconnecting power supply from motherboard as well and I didn't help. What kind of failure this may be? :/ EDIT: my Xbox is also both softmodded and hard modded.I'm not sure which modchip do I have but I think it's Aladdin. It is white.
I had the same problem with my hardmodded box, I'd turn it on and I'd get green lights flashing but the console would not boot and sometimes it would turn off by itself. I found out that if I'd pressed the eject button like crazy while turning it on, after some tries it would eventually work as normal again, until you turned it off again. I thought it was the DVD-drive or the HDD as well and opened it up to check but everything was in place. In the end in my case it was an capacitor that had turned bad on the motherboard (near the lower-right corner) it hadn't leaked or anything but it was a little puffed, once I replaced it, smooth as silk. Hope it helps.
Check the green caps by the power connector on the board. You'll need to take it apart anyway. Look below the caps and see if you see one of them has brow crap on the top, is bulging, or one of the legs has popped out of the cap (side profile)
I checked all my capacitors and they are all straight on top and none looks bad, without any liquid or bulging/puffing.Strange.I also tried the trick with the eject button.Zero luck. Also, my green light is not flashing, I need to correct myself. It just stays green normally like it would when it's working.I just get no picture or sound.I even put a game in it and you can hear the disc spinning inside. :/ Could it be the GPU? If that's the case, is it even fixable?
If you're not getting any video and you know your cables work. Then the video chip is out. If the AV port was faulty the Xbox wouldn't detect the AV cable and flash green/orange. I should add, since you have a modchip, are you sure the BIOS is fine? If it's corrupt in some way it will also boot to a blank screen.
Aladdin XT , I wonder if he can pull it off the pins to see if it boots without it, maybe the aladdin is bad. I've never tried running softmod and a chip at the same time. The lack of diagnostic lights would indicate some component failure. Take a picture of the mainboard and post it here.
I tried the console on both TVs (HDTV and CRT) with both cables (component and composite) and it's the same so I know already cables and TV faults aren't the cause. I have this feeling that something went wrong when I tried to delete that Psychonauts folder while I was ingame, but if it was that it would boot my stock drive normally then? Wouldn't it? I'm not sure about modchip since I don't have experience with flashing it and such and with modded XBoxes at all before this one, but could be the issue.I will wait what you guys have to say after my picture of the motherboard then I will use that as the last resort if there is no solution to reflashing it or something like that.I got this XBox last year used but it was in very good condition and boxed...as I've said it only had problems booting from first time but would boot later normally after a couple of tries and I've never had any problems in games and other things except that.It just suddenly stopped booting that night ago after I turned off Black. :/ Here are pictures of my motherboard: Sorry about the quality of the pictures... If these not suffice I can borrow a better camera. EDIT: I tried to lift that modchip and goes easily off, I didn't know it lays on pins like that.I will try too boot console now with that modchip lifted and inform you guys what happens. EDIT 2: Good news guys, with modchip lifted console boots on first try.But now i'm stuck with original dashboard.Where do I go from here? I'll also try putting it back on again, maybe there was some contact issue... EDIT 3: Yep, it looks like a modchip issue. It won't boot with it on motherboard. What should I do? Get the same one again or replace with some different one? I've never soldered a modchip on a console though I have some soldering skills. Is there some other way to get to my old XBMC?
Remove the motherboard & check the underside there should be some wires or a little PCB rebuilding the LPC port (bit where the chip plugs into) make sure all the wires are soldered to the board correctly. Also make sure the D0 point is soldered to the modchip & motherboard. (Looks like it's using the underside one) It could also just be that the bios on the chip is corrupt, if it is the case not sure if it can be recovered. (The chip looks like a Aladdin chip, but it's white so could be a pre release run or a clone)
http://www.eurasia.nu/shop/product_info.php?cPath=47&products_id=279 This is the one I have.I think it's not a clone just a really old one.Bios is probably corrupt and very old mod chip... and this : "NOTE: The LPC port rebuild on Xbox 1.6B should be done with 26 AWG or thicker wires. 30AWG wires are too thin and can cause problems with the chip not booting up." is the most probably reason why it failed to boot before and why now it doesn't boot at all.My wire looks really thin.Guy who modded this XBox probably didn't know how to do it right.I may go into adventure of resoldering it again with a thicker wire but for the beginning I'll order Splinter Cell and soft mod it.I'm really scared about destroying my motherboard.I will need to practice on some old board before. EDIT: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ROHs-Stranded-Of-UL-1007-Hook-Up-Wire-Cable-16-30AWG-Cord-Hook-up-DIY-Electrical-/111278677076?var=&hash=item19e8b9dc54:m:mHxNLSVzjesgAgnl7gMODDg Is this what I need?
That wire would work, but see if you can get a more flexible wire, it's easier to solder with. 30AWG should be fine, as long as there soldered with as little slack as possible. Also 1.6B consoles "I think" require the LFrame instead of the D0 point.
I'm figuring out now that I actually didn't have a real soft mod.I had XBMC booting and all that stuff but I see now that it's totally different if no modchip is installed.Furthest I can get is to the stock XBox dashboard. Should I do a soft mod now? Or should continuing my needs with a modchip be a better solution...? I'm asking because I read things now that softmod can delete itself and mess up after some time for no particular reason.
It's up to you what you want to do. If you're wanting a secure softmod try mine, the links is in my sig. (or google 2016 softmodding tool) Also that's false, older softmod can be overwritten with the original MSDash if you select Xbox Live in specific games, but this isn't the case with mine. (mine will reboot)
Then I really see no point in getting a modchip right now. Maybe sometime just for a little project of mine and hobby purposes I'll find some cheap XBox on eBay to mod it. Thanks a lot folks on all info! I would be stuck without you guys. And you Rocky5 especially for this to clarify and your mod! Props! Time to order a Splinter Cell and get onto business.
