Yep, Sega's working on the sequel to this great game! No console have been named. no other informations have been divulged and there's no pics for now either. i just hope it won't take too much time! Damn, I really hope they won't destroy it like snk doing with Metal Slug 3d! please, Do it in 2d!! or if it's in 3d, Do it in a 2d perspective, just like Gradius 5 by exemple, a 3d shoot 'hem up can't beat an old school one! cahaz
Hey, That' couldn't be tru(er?)! that's why it seemed so strange.... uh, don't know what to think then, maybe only a mistake from my website? Anyone saw this new on another site? it NEED to be true! EDIT: "Sega has recently registered Gunstar Super Heroes as a new trademark, hinting that the company is in the works with a new game based on its incredibly well-received Genesis action shooter Gunstar Heroes developed by Treasure more than a decade ago. When contacted, the company would not comment on the registered trademark or which system the game may be in development for. It's also unknown if the game is a console or handheld title. If it's a remake or remix of the classic Genesis and Megadrive game, the most appropriate home would be the Game Boy Advance due to its massive install base and its inherent ability to accurately reproduce games from the 16-bit era. Sega's Sonic Advance series, as well as the numerous Genesis and Super NES ports from other publishers are a testament to this." from: http://gameboy.ign.com/articles/597/597451p1.html NAY for the gba! it's better than nothing, but we need a ''return to your roots'' mode for the home consoles. There's already the KOF and MS series in packs and don't forget gradius 5, wich are working very well. so it's not like it would be a dangerous move from sega. (i was speaking of the american market especially)
I wouldn't mind seeing it in 3D, Treasure did well with Wario World and "Stretch Panic" I trust they could deliver it in 3D. I think that if they kept it 2D it'd feel like the PS2 Contra.
I'm utterly horrified. Sega technically owns publishing rights to all of Treasure's earlier work through Guardian Heroes, so they wouldn't even have to ask Treasure's permission to make this game. I'd like to think that Treasure will still be behind the development, but the Sega of today is not the Sega of just two years ago that we knew. This could be a dark time indeed, but I'll wait on further confirmation before I give up hope.
Hmm, very interesting indeed. I sure hope that the make it as a 2.5D gam,e. You know, the type with 3D backgrounds yet still has 2D game play. THey could fill the screen full of massive sprites and explosion !! That's what we want. None stop 2D blasting action. none of this 3D crap which is never as action packed as 2D stuff. Yakumo
Yeah, something like Viewtiful Joe would still be 2D enough for me. On the subject of Sega registering the trademark, I do hope to God it's still Treasure making the game - are they still on good terms? Treasure don't actually publish any of their games, and Sega probably do have rights to the game (as they published it in the first place, along with Dynamite Headdy). Then again, look at what Sega did to the Puyo Puyo series, letting Sonic Team make the newer games, and not Compile. Then again Compile don't really exist any more...
You're correct, Treasure hasn't really published any of their games, save for their latest release, the Japanese version of Advance Guardian Heroes. Sega published all of their first games - Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier, Yu Yu Hakusho, McDonalds Treasureland Adventure, Light Crusader, Dynamite Headdy, and Guardian Heroes - after which Treasure worked with ESP, Enix, and Nintendo for several games, and in their current situation appear to favor no one publisher. While there seems to be no problems or ill-will regarding the move from Sega to ESP and then on, the fact still remains that Sega apparently holds the rights to the original games, and could conceivably legally create a Dynamite Headdy 2 or a McDonalds TLA II (God forbid) without calling Treasure in. I hope they'll do the sensible thing and have Treasure come back to work on this, but like I said, the Sega of today is a very different thing from what it used to be.
I actually imagine that Treasure has SOME sort of rights to the franchise. It's not like they don't exist or anything anymore, I imagine that it'll be Treasure-developed and Sega-published. Can't go wrong with that combination.
If you look on the box or the title screen of Gunstar Heroes, it just says "©1993 Sega Enterprises", and nothing else. So it's likely Treasure have no rights at all to the game. Then again, I don't know much about Japanese copyright law.
Surely its still Treasure's IP? Just because Worms 3D was published by Sega doesn't make the franchise Sega's.
I promise you, I really really REALLY know what I am talking about here, and I'm not bullshitting you in the least - Sega holds the rights to Treasure's first handful of games. Boot up Advance Guardian Heroes on the GBA, and it clearly states, "©2004 Treasure. Original game © Sega". Treasure wasn't the big name publisher back then that they are now, and Sega most likely agreed to publish the games in return for the rights.
They own the publishing rights to those games. That doesn't mean they own the copyright to the characters/franchise. Atlus published Donpachi & DoDonpachi... doesn't mean they can make Donpachi III or IV (which they didn't, b/c they can't). I'd say a direct port at best is about all you could expect out of Sega, but even that might require new code which would go beyond the bounds of strict publishing.
If sega isn't stupid, they'll call treasure, because every shooter they touched (apart from silpheed :\ ) turned into gold
You're not getting what I'm saying. Treasure NO LONGER has any rights to their earlier titles at all - Sega does own the franchise, the characters, the names, EVERYTHING. Pulling down my Light Crusader box (it's the only boxed Treasure Genesis game I currently have) I see that Light Crusader is both copyrighted and trademarked by Sega. Going back to the AGH example, the original Guardian Heroes game is copyrighted by Sega. I can provide scans/pictures for people who are having a hard time understanding what I'm saying. I guess I'm just not seeing what the hard part in all this is. I'm really not lying to try and make friends, or lead anyone astray, I promise. I'm also well aware of the difference between publishing rights and rights to a game in general.
