I just beat the 'main story' of this game last night. Just curious what everyone who played it thinks.

I really like all the little throwbacks to Mario games of the past. There were just so many and I found myself chuckling quite a bit. I'm not going to spoil anything, but I like what happens after you complete the story. I was kind of worried I was basically done, but there's so much left to do. I love how well the game controls, and oh my god they should have used these swimming controls on 3D games to begin with. It just makes so much more sense to have swimming control more similar to the 2D games.

I don't really have any complaints, just some things I thought would have been nice:
The moon level really should've had a remix of the Mario Land 2 moon level music (the second level)
I guess it would have conflicted with 'photo mode', but 2D sections using the D Pad would have been cool
There were times when I wanted to use Mario's ninja punches and kicks, but flinging the hat was fun enough

It was good, but doesnt match the highs of Galaxy for me. There just isn't enough there, and I have zero interest in collecting 900 moons.

Fun to play, but too many distractions in the form of moons.

They show you where the next plot point (boss) is, but on the way there, you see about a thousand and one nooks, crannies or interesting shiny spots where you just know there is a random moon. So...you go, investigate and get it...and the next one and the next one. It's an hour later and you still haven't gotten to the boss.

Very frustrating and makes me long for, like Mario 64 where there is one star/goal, you get it, then you start again.

That's the whole point of the game, it's designed that way purposely - and it's fucking AMAZING for it.

I haven't enjoyed a game this much since Halo Reach came out. It took me about 15 hours to 'finish' the game, but I don't have all the moons yet and I'm intending to go back and attempt to get all of them. I'm playing here and there, but not in long sessions like I was for the first few days after launch.

And to everyone else: if you don't have a Switch, buy a Switch. This game is reason enough. After playing the demo at a kiosk for 5 minutes I immediately pulled out my phone and pre-ordered the cheapest Odyssey bundle I could find.

Looks a little too much like Donkey Kong 64 to me.
I like direction in my games. Having huge worlds with shit crammed everywhere is exhausting.

There is direction, if you don't want to find everything then don't, just blast through the main game. Finding all the extra stuff is for people that do want to spend the extra time on the game to find all the secrets and all the game has to offer. If you don't have the time, then find the minimum amount of moons for the level(usually pretty easy), and move on. No ones pointing a gun at you forcing you to collect and find everything, that's just rack of disciprine.

I don't blame you, Galaxy was a spectacular game, and with huge level variety. I think both Galaxy and Odyssey are good for different reasons, though. Odyssey tickles my more nostalgic Mario side, where Galaxy was just so damn cool and interesting.

Galaxy's use of the Wiimote scared me away. Is it worth picking up even after all this time?

Good god yes. The planet concept lends itself to some amazingly creative level design that Nintendo took full advantage of. The Wiimote integration is fairly low key for the most part, with only a couple points in the game where they shove it in your face which can be annoying. For the most part though, you'll only use it by giving it a flick to trigger the planet travel, which I never found annoying or troublesom to trigger. Also, it still looks great for a Wii game, I wondered how they pulled off such graphics on the system at times.

The game is just awesome and I really like the music, beat the game but just finding moons is quite fun, last game I played a lot before this was Breath of the Wild.

Playing this game puts me back to Mario 64,a good wave of nostalgia.

Don't know how nintendo pulled this off but this game is done very well.

I love it! I bought a Switch just for that game and wondered before I started if it was going to be worth it. Yes, it was TOTALLY worth it. I love collecting everything in games. I just beat the main story the other day and was hoping it had "Go back and explore value" and holy shit yes it does. Haha I was going to wait on the Switch and I am glad I didn't. I will be getting Zelda: BoTW later after Odyssey. I just didn't want to overwhelm myself with two great games at once.

Note: I will add that Odyssey can be very frustrating at times but just the right amount of it. Not too much where one wants to quit and not too little that everything is a breeze.

When I buy my switch it will be with this game. It seems like the Mario I've waited 20+ years for.

    A few questions for everyone:
    - Are motion controls necessary at all?
    - Does the game encourage any particular controller style?
    - Is it really worth buying a Switch just for this game?

    - I have rarely used the motion controls. I use the circle hat move on flowers and I threw the cap up in the air once to possess a fork. That is it.
    - It wants you to use the detached motion controls. A screen even comes up every time you start the game telling you to try it.
    - I felt it was worth it. If you like Mario and collecting everything you will like it. It has a lot of little nice things from the old Mario games in it too.

So far I've only played the game with a Pro controller, never once used the detached setup yet. Even with the Pro controller the motion stuff is all there. I used them a little bit, usually just to trigger things like circular hat attack, or making Mario do something faster. I'm sure I looked like an idiot shaking my controller like a mad man in panic to get a bit of speed to clear something I shouldn't have attempted, but it somehow adds to the moment.

Between this game and Zelda I could die happy with my Switch purchase. Luckily, we're still in the first year of the consoles life, with lots of great looking stuff in the pipeline.

Motion controls are completely unnecessary, the only times I've found myself using them was to do the hat throw where it spins in a circle around mario (tilt the controller/separated joycon/Switch in handheld mode, quickly to the left and then the right) and sometimes just shaking the controller to climb something faster, but just holding down the Y button makes you climb a bit faster than normal anyway.

As soon as you boot up the game, the first thing it tells you is to try playing with the joycon separated in each hand - don't do this, it's dogshit and completely unnecessary.

Yes, it really is worth buying a Switch just for this game. The only two Switch games I own right now are this and Sanic Mania, and I'm still playing my Switch more than every single one of my consoles combined (Intellivision, NES, SNES, N64, Sega stuff, etc. right through to Xbox one and PS4).

I bought a Switch solely for Double Dragon IV.

Double Dragon IV? The one that is also available on PC? The game that's kind of really shitty? That's unfortunate.

I thought it was great. I would say it is easy, but is it? I died numerous times throughout. So many easy moon pieces, yet so many I have yet to find that are going to prove challenging. I loved all the throwback references. I felt the change in gameplay was innovative, and didn't feel gimmicky. Great music, great controls, amazing graphics. It's an instant classic just as botw is. Nintendo switch is off to one hell of a start. Epic run for a new console. Nintendo had some damn balls for taking a HUGE gamble with the switch, and it's paying off immensely. Being a busy adult I hardly have time for games like I used to, but it's easier to find time with the switch. It gets more play than my PS4 does lately by far.

Do you really like the 8-bit parts though? I thought they felt like total ass, the controls were floaty and Mario didn't have any momentum, completely different to the original game. Maybe that's just me though, since I do still play Super Mario Bros. 1 fairly often...
