As good as streets of rage is I never really "wanted" it at the time. I wanted my nes favourites to pop on screen like Castlevania, mario, zelda, metroid and Turtles. Because I grew up with the nes I was more fond of the Nintendo franchises so that's what I wanted from the snes, it was a no brainer for me then.
SNES video processor was better in terms of affine transformations. The thing is I never liked SNES mosaic effect. Historically they introduced it with SNES, and they still keep hardware support for that even in Nintendo DS (and probably in 3DS). Effect looks very cheap, and I am not missing it in Genesis at all. As of sound, I liked how Genesis sounds. So simply I like Genesis better. Just my 50 cents.
From what I remember, the Pre NES era didn't have this kind of debate because there were so many choices for home systems. You had not only the three you mentioned but home PCs that would run games also like the Commodore 64. Coleco even made the Adam computer to enter this market. Eventually the crash happened, a year or so passed, and the NES was unveiled. The marketing for the NES was pretty brilliant. A kid at school came in one day and said "I'm getting Rob! I can't wait" To him it wasn't even called the NES.
PC Engine won. Speaking of RPG, SNES is a monster in such genre: Earthbound Chrono Trigger Dragon Quest V Terranigma Final Fantasy VI Super Mario RPG Tales of Phantasia Illusion of Gaia Seiken Densetsu 3 The quality is so high I have trouble to do a personal ranking. Actually in Japan PCE (Duo) had more releases than MD/CD/32X combined (672 vs 555). In a surprise twist for a system that got into CD business only through an add on the number of games for CD format is bigger than the number of Hucard games. In Japan PCE was the number two system.
Let's make this easy.. If you had to pick one system and could never again play the other (or its games by any means) then which would you choose? Me=SNES
Thankfully we don't have to do that and can instead enjoy them all. That question helps you pick out which is your favorite. With that I'd have to go with SNES which is what I grew up with. But there are most definitely games on PC-Engine I'd miss as well as Genesis. But I remember the SNES from having it in the 90s and remember so many games for it.
I still think the SNES looks childish and the Mega Drive stylish. It's not hype 'I bought in to' it's how I see it. The only laughable thing is the SNES console design. I mean, come on.. The GameCube, now that design I like.
I grew up with Nintendo myself, and as much as I would've wanted the other consoles, at that time I had to pick one (not because I couldn't afford it, but by parental fiat), and there was no way I was missing out on Final Fantasy, so it had to be SNES. While SNES might me the technically more powerful machine, I have to wonder how much it hurt with NoA's draconian censorship and game release policies. Game release policies that still haunt us to this day.
A console could look like a giant turd or a rainbow covered piece of plastic with a pretty pink bow and I wouldn't give a shit, as long as it had good games. Funny to hear you think the SNES looks childish and then go on to talk about how you like the Gamecube. If I truly had to think about it, the Gamecube is the most childish looking of them all! Sporting a handle making it look like a child's lunch pale, and utilizing many circles in it's design. Totally kiddy! Also, don't get me wrong, I love the Gamecube design. Handle is sweet, compact, very solid and reliable build.
This. Although I would argue part 2 was the bigger bombshell against the lackluster Snes sidescrolling beat em up selection.
When I say Streets of Rage I mean the series as a whole unified unit. Though the first game did have that awesome screen clearing cop car launched bazooka.
