I sure hope you're right because I started collecting to try and live a childhood I didn't have not to spend hundreds on 20 year old games :/ (Grew Up poor but had a second hand SNES that still works BTW and only had SMW, Mega Man X and DKC) (TBH do you really need anything other than those 3? ^__^)
yeah, mariokart and your list in distinctly lacking in SEGA Off topic i agree but theres far too many "collectors" that collect for collectings sake, the games are taken off the market, sat on a shelf in a room and never played or looked it, just sealed in a plastic bag. "im not really interested in this, but its worth this so i'll add it to my collection, no im not going to play it either" pfff why can't these people collect rocks or bottlecaps or sports crap /rant over
I can see where you're coming from, but it's these types of people who are the reason brilliantly preserved examples of vintage games surface years later when they need money, or have a near death experience and decide collecting is frivolous or have passed away. Ether way games hoarded by these people usually make it back into circulation because let's face it, nobody is immortal. In my mind, ownership of such things is an illusion really.
Remembering the comic book crash of the 90s, I think we're going to see the same thing with retro game collecting. There are so many people right now who find 8 bit Nintendo cool for the sake of being cool and are now starting their collections like they're hard core gamers. For instance as much as I like the Game Chasers youtube show, I know those guys just got interested in collecting because its cool and the in thing now. I highly doubt five years ago they were playing console games or even thinking about gaming. Otherwise they wouldn't be searching for nice copies of dirt common titles like Blades of Steel (yes that was in an episode). In a few years time another collecting fad will occur and all those 8 bit and 16 bit carts will be seen as not cool anymore and plummet in value with the exception of actual rare low print titles. Same happened to the comic scene and it will happen here.
Lets hope so. I agree with your comment that alot of these "collectors" and also resellers are only into it right now because of some strange "coolness" and not because they are as you say, hardcore fans.
I've been on this planet 32 years coming up I lived in a pretty poor-middle class area here in baltimore city. Oddly enough my peers and me never experienced a console war one kid had a genesis the other had a snes some had a tb16 Nobody had a neogeo lol. But we were all really good about sharing our games and consoles it was more about the newest game out than what console was used I remember my mind being blown when a buddy got secret of mana and sim ant yes sim ant is my fing ish I love that fing game after he was done I let him barrow my genesis and games for the snes and collection we all did this. Than I started modding consoles it wasn't until my late 20's I got into a childhood console war for no other reaso. Than to entertain myself. My family wasn't rich by anymeans but I new how to make a buck at an early age growing crops and selling. Newspaper route. Putting out flyers ect. But I got my game on. Goods times when people were social and not self centered enough to make gaming an image its no wonder we relive the moments, it was a good time with an even better generation with meaning and purpose.
