yeah my 64DD refuses to power up, ive cleaned the connectors, now what? any common problems or any advice? is there a fuse inside? ed; solution: thanx to the collective effort and help here rolleyes: )we can now establish that _NOTHING_ will happen with your 64DD without the memory expansion pack, no detection, no nothing. slip that expansion in tho and:
I'd be wary of taking it apart unless you've tried everything else and you know exactly what you're doing.
powering up as in nothing happens, the led doesnt even light up. the N64 works fine and the regular game kicks in fine.
I believe 64DD unit gets its power from N64 console. Maybe there's something wrong at the connector end?
maybe, does anyone have a pinout for the connector i could check with a multimeter? i dont have acces to doubles of neither n64 or 64DD so sadly i cant test them with anything else ed: the 64DD definetly gets its power from the console, there is nothing to plug into it. for the drive to work there doesnt have to be a special cartridge or anything like that?
64dd problems lets see you need the ram expansion pack and the ipl should just load when the disk is pushed in mark
"I'd be wary of taking it apart unless you've tried everything else and you know exactly what you're doing." It's the common sense statement I say to myself over and over....right before I take it apart. And then break it in a different way. Sven, you're saying that when you insert a disk nothing happens?
i dont have a ram expansion pack, could that be the problem? absoluteley nothing happens, i think the led on the 64DD should atleast light up even without the RAM pack? doesnt matter if i start with the disc in or insert it or whatever.
You should be able to boot with 4MB rdram unit. It will just error out on screen saying you need the expansion pak (it will be in japanese tho). For actual games to start you need the expansion pak. Small question. Is the front of your DD unit blue or grey?
Even with just the jumper pak in it should still work, it just comes up with a warning screen telling you it needs the expansion pak. Just checking your not using it with a PAL N64 are you, im guessing your not but just checking. {edit} what subbie said
my N64 is jap ofcourse. ill get the extra ram today hopefully (if my local gamestore has any) and try again, but so far i havent been able to boot or detect any kind of 64DD activity :banghead: the whole 64DD is regular n64 grey, nothing blue on it as far as i can recall. ed: nope the only offcoloured part on it is the eject button which is a lighter shade of grey.
Ok just checking since blue units (aka dev units) wont boot on their own with out a IPL cart. So I was just checking. Did you just recieve the unit or have you had it working in the past and just recently retested it? It seems like your unit is busted.
a busted 64DD is a rare occasion. The unit rarely "dies" as a whole - mechanical problems beeing more common of course. The 64DD LED only lights up on Disk access, so it's not a power indicator. I say it's the lack of expansion pak. Get an exp. pak asap and test it with the unit. It should give some reading "up or down" - quoted from the Return of the Jedi =p
Dude. The IPL should boot with out the expansion pak. I'll verify that later tonight to make sure but I remember it booting but giving an error message.
I remember it giving an error in the emu, not sure with an actual drive, i don't have a jumper pak around. Dude.
