Here's a pic of the screen when you try to use the 64DD without a memory pack: This was done on a unit that had no memory pack installed. It's asking you if you've inserted the memory pack correctly, then advises you to check out the instructions if you have any questions. Error 44.
64DDs are a bit overstocked right now, plus you have some new sellers who aren't helping things a bit. One guy just sold a Randnet in auction on eBay for $196. There was no Randnet disk which probably didn't help. Having it end at 5 AM on a Sunday morning in the US probably didn't help either.
i do not seem to get that error no matter how i do, exactly what was plugged in when you did this? was there anything at all plugged into the expansion port?, i had a "jumper pack" in mine, have no idea what that is tho? also, what is the difference between a "randnet" and a regular 64DD ?
randnet is a species of bundle the DD was released with. Randnet is also the service that cooperated with nintendo in launching the DD and its ill-fated online service. You have an exceptional scenario really. A jumper pak is enough to display the above image. Nevertheless, since the uni operates as expected when an Expansion pak is inserted means that the unit is fine. Bottom line, just try using someone else's N64/jumper pak to locate the source of the abnormality. The jumper pak is just a closing circuit, it doesn't contain anything memory related, hence I doubt it's a jumper pak issue at all.
Anybody know what the going rate for a bare bone dev DD unit? I just want the sexy blue drive to experiment with.
$196!? h: Damn, I should look better.. I lost out on another one that was going for $250 a couple a days ago. Damn, I wish I was at home back then to snipe it..
Bah, too expensive for something I just want to test some ideas on. I though loose DD dev units would go for cheaper since they're worthless to most people.
technically they re completely worthless if you can't boot ipl4rom somehow. They don't contain any IPL so the device is "dead" anyway.
BUT they are still "oh geez my good incredibleee a 64dd devvvv unittt!!" style Or maybe its just the blue hazel?
64DD.net is down right now. Looks like his host went out of business. Sorry Sven I have 4 or 5 64DDs right now but no N64 heh... I'd love to help you but until I get another N64 in I can't. I bundled it with something else about 3 weeks ago without realizing it was my last one. I should have another one coming in, tho. The picutre I posted was something I found on Yahoo, not one my my screen shots. The Randnet that sold for $196 had no software with it, just the console, modem and box. Still a low price but that type of package is the least valuable Randnet package since no games = no fun. The modem service isn't available anymore. Most people get the Randnet package because it's the most widely available and almost always comes with a lot of 5-6 disks. The only other option is a blue box 64DD which is just the console only, but those are actually pretty hard to find and the price is usually high because it has more of a collector's status attached to it.
dont sweat it mate my 64DD is up and running, now im just curious. maybe there is a difference between the randnet and the regular 64DD and only teh randnet gives an error message? and yeah i agree that for an almost-prototype addon the 64DD has a surprising array of quality titles, definetly a must-have if you are any kind of N64 fan/collector.
