    The IPL boots with or without RAM pack. Thats 1000% sure. And no,the zero count is correct.
    It can only be either
    a) the 64dd -> bad luck
    b) the n64 -> a bit better luck

    i can check later tonight whether the DD boots if no mempack is installed in the N64. I know it does not WORK without the mempack, but i wonder if it boots for me or not.

    i don't think we're helping him by rubbing our DD-functional-cocks on his face guys.

    oh im loving it.. ;-)

    ..anyways, when and if someone actually tries it out would you mind doing it with f-zero (if you have it available ofcourse) just to rule as much out as possible.

    thanx to the collective effort and help here :)rolleyes: )we can now establish that _NOTHING_ will happen with your 64DD without the memory expansion pack, no detection, no nothing.

    slip that expansion in tho and:

    Serously strange, I am still going to have to verify that. Hell i can get a DD to boot with out the DD :p (refering to booting the IPL via v64jr).

    Atleast your DD works and is not broken man. Thats a good thing !! :D

    As the sage states - no exp pack = 64dd boots, but displays error message !

    how an emulator behaves and how the actual hardware behaves are pretty unrelated to be honest.

    im sure someone else with an actual 64DD can verify it to satisfy your curiosity, i highly doubt my unit is uniqe.

    I've owned about 30 of them and none have ever given me problems. Anything that has to do with Nintendo during their cartridge days is usually pretty solid.

    I ll take that further. In all honesty, all nintendo hardware is extremely reliable compared to its equal competition.

    Yes, the GC's drive will eventually wear-out, but the PS2s crapped right off the bat for example.

    I own a boxed randnet DD unit (and japanese N64). :)

    I've experimented a lot and not only via emulation. Like i've said, I've booted retail DD units off a dev IPL, sw boot a DD directly, booted dev ipl with no DD present. ...

    God I need to get a dev DD unit and a disk with something on it. I know I could get it to boot.

    Yeah, I think Fazycruck sold one a couple a months ago on 64dd.net for almost nothing. Sadly I missed out on that one too. Luckytoke might still have one for sale too (check the ancient for sale thread).
