I finally picked up a N64 so I was able to test out the units. If you have the stock N64 memory pack installed, the one that came with the N64, then it will boot up and show you the error message that I posted. If you have no memory pack installed at all then the system does not boot. You just see the N64 LED light up but nothing else happens. I'm guessing that that's what happened to you. Now we can all sleep better at night.
