Any time any company releases a new product they're "setting their own standard". That doesn't make it a good standard. What you said sounds like a flimsy excuse for a company who've released a product that differs greatly from what most people wanted.

It was bound to happen: Hitler and the iPad On a sidenote, I completely forgot about the awesome MS Courier. What are the chances of that one catching on instead of the iPad?
The point that i was trying to make is that Apple has never made anything people wanted them to make but instead make what they think is best. It's not an excuse, just a fact. Doesn't mean you have to like what they make, that's all.
AFAWK, all those numbers are theoretical, and from apple. They've always exagerated about battery, wait until we see some real use numbers.
Im not sure about this in the past but apple lately not only have come up with some nice batteries for their new models but from the reviews ive seen of the unibody macbook pros most people seem to say their numbers are very accurate. http://www.anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=3435&p=12
My bad, I meant ALL manufacturers exagerate, not just apple. On the other hand the iPad may pack a big battery like the Nokia netbook, which would actually give it that much power.
Yeah Apple seem to be doing well in the battery side of things with their new laptops however they then screw you over as they aren't user replaceable. Saying that allot of netbooks are getting really good battery life out of 6 cell batteries.
The only reason the 10-hour battery life is impressive (to me) is because this is supposedly playing HD video. Also, I just read that somewhere; I don't actually know if it's true. Knowing Apple, the battery will probably max out at ~9.5 hours with basic web browsing. Netbooks achieved that kind of battery life months ago, and it'll only get better with the introduction of the N450 (Pine Trail). Apple fucked up, and I think they know it. Steve looked like he was struggling with selling it to the audience, and their promo video is just demeaning. It doesn't do anything a netbook can't do better (other than the whole touchscreen thing, and some netbooks have this, too). If they want this thing to sell, it's going to have to run OSX. I want a tablet computer, not a $500 plaything. It can't even play Youtube videos.
As a hardcore mac/iphone fan heres my take: As an internet device, with no flash support, they are essentially releasing a broken or crippled product. The iphone is lacking flash but it was the first phone to feature a non mobile fully featured browser, plus a load of other firsts. Its amazing that the promo videos are now updated to show the flash plug in as missing. I've never seen a promo video highlight a missing feature. Whats happening is the computer is evolving from a hardcore computation machine to a device that delivers media content. Media content meaning music/video/written. It also can do some average work tasks like writing a word doc. Casual users don't want to fool around with operating systems. They want something like the iphone OS that gets them what they need quickly and without messing around with clunky start menus etc. Flash content is an immense part of the internet. Without it, theres no reason to abandon a laptop/pc. The iPad needs multitasking and flash support to begin to become a pc replacement, which I think is what they intend for it.
I dont know how much of it has to do with apple's business: if you can play flash games for free (which are getting more and more complex) why would you pay for those crappy clones of old games in the app store? And shows and music, why pay for something you can watch for free on hulu? It all boils down to apple keeping the device as closed as possible. And XGA, not 720p, so with the black bars you're more likely watching video in 480p or less.
