Are Games too easy now?

Discussion in 'General Gaming' started by GodofHardcore, Jul 13, 2008.

  1. When you're a kid, games seem to be much harder because you're less experienced at games and you're still learning how to play games in general. As you get older, games begin to seem much easier. It's not because companies are making them easier, no no no. It's because you've been gaming for many years now and your skill level is much higher than it was when you were a kid.........So, it's not the games that are getting harder, it's the gamer that's getting better skilled. Just my thoughts.

Jannetty> Yeah, its true. But the games nowadays are definitively easier. I'm speaking of Xbox/xbox360 as i did not play other "hard games" on other systems yet. I never have problem progressing in a modern game, as you can usually retry a lot the same sequence.

I think it comes from the developers that want to reduce to the max the frustration level... And difficulty = frustration sometimes ;)

I believe the word you are looking for is "pussy". I'm older than you, and I guarantee you I have less time than you... any moron could figure this out based on a comparison of our physique's alone. I still strive to clear arcade games on a single credit, although I continue for practice.

Now go play arcade games. There's a handful of 16-bit console games that are difficult, but most of them are girlie by comparison. Console games today? Long-winded collect-o-thons for a generation of "I must have it now" people.

Hmmm... yeah... uh, no. I'm too lazy to dig up my bong picture. But that's just totally wrong. I was better at games as a whole as a kid. Why? Plain and simple: more time, and less money. I had to spend a lot of time on a single game. I can't imagine me being special in this respect.

The only genre I'm better at now is the scroll shooting, and that's b/c it's about all I play in my old age. So, back to that whole repetition thing making you a better player. The games are easier now, plain and simple. What was the last recent game where you truly got stuck b/c you lacked the skill (not the time, not the tip from the internet on how to unlock the Princess' chastity belt) to clear it?

For the most part, yes, games are much easier now. But some still provide a decent challenge.

Personally, I don't think its really fair to say games are horribly easier now because nothing is as hard as what Cave is currently doing because, well, its what Cave is currently doing. Is your typical Cave game harder than your favorite 16-bit shmup? Probably.

Likewise, if we look at RPGs (which were even being made "back in the day"), for the most part, yeah, they're a lot easier now. But then there's games like Lost Odyssey, which make the casual Final Fantasy kids cry because they took away grinding all together and force strategy.

Also, Ninja Gaiden 2 is hard. It has save points sure, but try playing that shit on Mentor difficulty. Save points be damned. Though honestly, if we wanted to be technical, I doubt "1CCing" Ninja Gaiden 2 on even the default difficulty would be a breeze. ;-)

In general, GaijinPunch is right and a large majority of games coming out anymore are snoozefests where the player is just along for the ride. But, there are some developers that are pushing the envelope on difficulty and are providing a nice little something for those of us that are more into the hardcore gaming.

Never said they weren't. I just played Onimusha for the first time the other day. It was enjoyable... but the few times I got stuck (or didn't feel like decoding a cumbersome message) and peaked at a walkthru, I laughed when the author said, "this is a tuff mofo". Even the last boss I killed on my first try.

Wow... well said. It sounded just as if you have them. :D

All I can say is that nowadays developers seem to think that good AI and level design, which was the base of a game's difficulty in the past, can both be replaced with a frustrating enviroment and unbalanced weapons.

Thats why recent games seem to be fairly easy IMO

Yeah, it's not so much games are easier, it's that harder ones are thinner on the ground. When hard ones like NG2 do come out the reviewers start whining.

But yeah, there is a section of gamers who refuse to play through the same section of anything twice, refuse to work for the later sections. What you gonna do.

    No you are getting better/older.

It also helps that you don't need a English dictionary to try to understand what you have to do.

Games aren't about high scores now, unless you consider achievements part of that.

The real challenge used to be beating your best times/score/whatever.

To be honest I think a lot of games on XB Live Arcade and PSN are all about beating high scores.

I got my all friends on my PSN Friend list. We have competitions over Super Star Dust HD scores, GT5 Prologue times, whatever the hip game of the moment is. Same with 360, people try to get Geo Wars high scores.

We are the kid generation of gamers now that most of us are leaving our teenage years and getting better we are the first ever adult generation of gamers making us the "Leet Pwnz Nubz" generation. We are just getting better and wiser at games, we know them inside and out especially those of us who where child prodigy gamers who magically knew all the controls to games without looking at any instructions and could play the same game multiplatform with a different controller without one ounce of confusion how it worked. Games came in our blood from the time we first picked them up, now that we have mastered them they -seem- to be getting easier but in reality we are just to good for most of the stuff they throw at us. My advice? Next time you pick up a game start on the hardest difficulty.

Yes, they're, almost every game in this gen that iIve played didn't lasted for more than three days (obviously, i'm not counting RPGs). Ninja Gaiden 2 isn't difficult, it's cheap as hell; it doesn't depends on how good you are playing, is more a question of luck

PD: Gaijinpunch, i've read from you some times that Daifukatsu is very easy compared with the previous Dodonpachis, how much easier is it?

First of all, n00b pwnag3 is a tradition older than me, as old as games themselves (even non-video games:eek:h: believe it or not those existed at some point) and as long as some douche is making a victory dance in front of the Tv, this tradition will exist:nod::lol:

But IMO, highscores are stupid, they were stupid 16 years ago and they continue to be stupid. What was the point of getting to the 1st place in some arcade board? most of the cabinets didnt had batteries or solid memory, so unless the arcade was one of those 24/7 joints your highscore would/will be gone as soon as they close and cut the power.

You never get anything tangible for your victory, not even a damn discount for another game. Is not like we're getting actual trophies or anything, and dont even dream about those custom prizes from the Atari days.

AI is gone, I can hardly think of any breakthroughs after the original HL almost 10 years ago. And is hard to play the same level again and again when the design is awful and theres no secret areas or alternative routes (the more you get these days is a slightly different path).

Is hard to place the blame on just one area: whiny reviewers and lazy developers have always been there.
