Cnet ran this Joke recently http://crave.cnet.co.uk/gamesgear/0,39029441,49290548-1,00.htm in response I wrote my own http://ssg2txrr.bravehost.com/revswork/Top10contollers.html I think I might do another look at controllers based on what's said here. I realised while I made my own Top 10 it's hard to pin down 10 great controllers.
Cnet are idiots, Ther Xbox 360 pad is ok but....come on. The N64 was good for Goldeneye and only Goldeneye, maria 64 would play better with a dpad.
I agree with you completely on the dualshock being no.1 you have to take many things into consideration, control pads have gone through many evolutionary steps, but the dual shock has made it through two games generations and pretty much a third with the spin off six axis despite its many pitfalls. not ever been that keen on the xbox pads but then again i never played my box much. i could never really get to grips with the gamecube controller and pretty much played my ps2 last gen and dc too actually. Even though I started a sega fan boy, i know in my heart Nintendo had control pads down. Nes and Snes were far superior to SMS/MD
The N64 pad to me always felt odd, I was never comfy using it either way. My favorite controller ever was the original XBOX controller the big hunky one, I loved that one! It felt perfect for my hands. Just my 2 cents. If your talking about older systems, Nintendo did have better controllers back in the day SNES was good, best at the time. There's another 2 cents. Jeff.
The PS1 Original controller was the best non-joystick controller, the joysticks were just tacked on and never felt that great
I never quite liked the PSX pads, and the Snes pad gives me cramps and both the dpad and buttons lack enough feedback, unlike Genesis ones. The N64 would be perfect if it had SEGA's analog thumbpad and not that crappyass analog stick... I tried the Saturn analog back in the day and didnt felt like it was that awesome, the DC one fells better to me. I agree that the X360 controller is as good as a "normal" (like not-wiimote-like) controller can and will get...
I thought the Genesis pad was better then SNES. I always missed jumps because of the lack of diagonal movement (for me anyway). My wierd hands love the big ass Xbox pad. I do love the 360 controller though.
What a load of shit ! Where's the Saturn Japanese pad? Miles better than the SNES or PSX pad. And what the fuck is the Atari "must strain my wrist" stick doing in there ???? Yakumo
Pads are always down to personal taste plus the face on a lot of consoles you dont have a great deal of choice in the matter. From GoH list I would have said "NES pad? Are you suffering from some mental illness that makes uncomfortable to hold controllers with poor diagonals seem like sex? At position 3 above the Sega Saturn pad, I'm sorry I think you should lie down". Also 'I've not used it but Im told its good', if you have not used it then don't list it as it's like me doing a list of Top 10 cars and saying "I've not driven this car, but I'm told it's good"... The Atari VCS joystick isnt that bad Yakumo, it's a great stick for the Atari VCS, C64, etc. However most people say 'Oh it strains my wrist', this is mainly because they have used a well worn joystick with a worn plastic internal that press the leaf switches and the leaf switches seeing better days. A new one (and you can buy new ones still) is a good little retro stick. Everypad has its good and bad points, for example.. PS2 Dual Shock - Good points - Nice button positions, lots of buttons, comfortable to hold for long periods. Bad points - Poor D pad, too large dead zones on the analogue sticks, analogue buttons dont work as well as they could. PS3 Six Axis Pad - Good points - Had much better dead zones on the analogue sticks, had analogue triggers at last, wireless, light, comfortable to hold. Bad points - No rumble, stick bad d-pad, analogue buttons still poor, bluetooth interference means the stick can disconnect too easily. Saturn Pad - Good Points - Nice to hold, best pad for playing 2D fighters ever, responsive. Bad points - Triggers a bit poor Saturn Analogue Pad - Good Points - Adds analogue controller, adds triggers so playing racing games is easier. Bad Points - Too big to hold for long periods of time, analogue stick to far up to make proper control easy, came out far too late for it to be supported by lots of games. Etc etc etc. Although if I had to do a top 5 then it would be... 5 Atari 2600 4 Xbox original US pad 3 Megadrive 6 button pad 2 PS3 Sixaxis Pad 1 Jap (or new US / UK) Saturn Pad
Yakumo, what did you expect? half of the intertubes are chock-full of nes fanboys that wouldnt dare to defy the holy word of nintendo:lol: Almost all of these controller charts (specially that evolution tree one) give nintendo all the credit of the current trend in controllers, like if this was creationism or some shit. They never say SEGA invented the ergonomic controller, the analog triggers and the analog pad all controllers, even nintendo ones, are using today. And lets not even talk about the dual analogs from sony, and the fact that there were many wiimote-like controllers before that one, like the sidewinder with tilt capabilities and the fishing controller.
Well, didn't Nintendo at least invent the Dpad? Also I remember Sony having a dual analog pad before the dual shock.
the insult has to stop. The n64 controller is the most comfortable for me, considering i have big hands. The joystic, while new, was also perfect. VERY accurate, more so than any potentiometer-based stick. The 360 pad is ok, but it's not good for retro games at all. The build quality is good though. From popular official controllers, the worst has to be the PS(enter number) controller for me. They are all a pain for my hands after a while, and i never really "connect" to the game due to this. Thus i never liked playing on PS consoles for this very reason.
I hate the Sixaxix. Its light, lacks rumble, feels cheap, still has poor placement of analog sticks, and has even worse triggers
Agreed the sixaxis is not that great of a controller although i'd say it's better than the 360. I actually like the Atari Jaguar the best even though it's big and has a keypad it never gives me any pain and feels real good holding it, the worst and this may be off topic a little is the PSP it's awful and kills my hands.
Yeah, but still! At least the patent caused Sega to make the nice Genesis dpad! The thing I liked about Dual Shock was R! and L1 for RPG menus!
