I've been wanting to start playing the Final Fantasy games. Upon some research I noticed that most people said start with VI. What does everyone think? For some reason I also really wanna play VIII, so I'll probably just play VI-IX. Any ideas? Thanks!

8 can be abit hard to start off with because of the junctioning/draw system being so different to most games in the series (yet to play them all myself), Although i started off with VIII myself and it is my favorite in the series quite a few don't like it

IMO i would say VII because its the most known/popular

it depends on what systems you own, the NES ones are a bit hard to play and if you want to start from the beginning I'd recommend to start with the SNES ones.

My vote is VII too, it was my first FF and I have no regrets on that.

they're not linked, apart from the split episodes.
IMO, the ONLY FF game that really messed me up, was 7...
what a kick in the gems that was, outstanding! :witless: (one of the few RPG's with a shit-out-of-luck bunch of chars and outcome to match)
    ...
for a bit different, there's 'FF7 dirge of cerberus' (have the PAL-EUR retail) , more of a third/first person shooter, but with the aesthetic found in FF games 10 onwards, probably 8 even.
for a 'shooter' i don't know how they kept the style, goes against RPG's, but they synthesized styles to perfection. (and you get a different perspective on the 7 inmates)
    ...
FF 7 crisis core for the psp (200x/300x/n100x) hooked up to TV and ps3 pad in sync, SWEET! (run around a bit like PSO, but with RPG elements and obvious plot)
    ...
FF10 and part 2 for (have those on retail too) despite what others may think, it's quite a big game...
a lot to do, and some of it frustrating! (worth it)
i was sold at part 2 though, because it's about girls...fuck it, i'll say what i'm thinking.
a group of lemons proving that oranges aren't the only fruit! :wink-new: all about the 'plot' babe! (get a game solution, you'll see what i mean, but if you want hardcore 'stuff' then this subject isn't for that)
    ...
FF 12 ps2 (another to my retail collection, (and i've yet to play the zodiac job, last i checked, translation was still a work in progress..full polished game please) a banging game, with a nice open feel to it, could've been longer as a game though, story is great. (if plagued by really scummy english accents, imagine what the dregs of UK would be like, but in voice, BAD ACTING all round, this is the same for ALL official relzes, ALL regions have that scummy vocal pitch, i feel bad for the world)
    ...
that's about it really, didn't rate ff13 and part 2, the ps3 one-disked version (NEVER entertaining the fuckin 360 with it's GIMPED split-disk games, got two) felt more like a cinematic than a game, little to do. story is good.
    ...
just play whatever you want, you have a brain, don't require opinions to get experiences.
    trail and error? (or retribution?)
    have fun. :eek:nthego:

Final fantasy 7 is my personal favourite. I think 9 is a good one to start with, the battle system is a lot simpler than 7.

VII will definitely be my second. VI seems to be the most accessible to someone who hasn't played the games before. Then again, I did try FF1 for about an hour and a half before even hitting the title card. I decided I had too much going on in my life at the time. For those who've played VI, is there much difference between the SNES version (FFIII in US) and the PS1 version that was in the FF Anthology? I have the PS1 version of VI ready to go, just wanna make sure that's the best version. So happy PSN has almost all the games.

X is great too (although a tad linear), put over 300 hours into the HD remaster (damn dark aeons)

The thing for me personally is that I find the Super Nintendo games to be a completely different experience to the Playstation games. Other than the basic fundamentals of turn based RPGs there is a massive leap in presentation and story telling, quite obviously, but so much to the point that I don't find FFVI as a good example of what to expect from FFVII and vice versa. I'd say that if you want to play a classic RPG then go with one of the Super Nintendo games as that is the experience you are going to get, but if you want something a bit more dynamic and intricate then go with one of the Playstation games. FFVI will teach you nothing that can't be learned in FFVII as each battle system is familiar yet relatively unique, the thing that changes most is the presentation and the over all feel you get from playing on that particular console.

For me I'd recommend starting with VII, VIII or IX as you're probably going to get the most enjoyment out of them and find an actual appreciation for the series, one that you can then go back to the Super Nintendo with and get the most out of what in this day and age can be quite difficult games to play and get in to. There's also games like Chrono Trigger and the Seiken Densetsu (Secret of Mana) series on the Super Nintendo which are also by Square and can be a lot easier to enjoy due to their action RPG elements, just as something else you can play should IV, V and VI be a bit too much for you to enjoy. They're all great games, just know what to expect and be happy with what each console can offer and you should find them all to be a great experience.

Yeah, I was told Tactics is one of the best. If I make it through VI-IX I will then go to Tactics. I've just been really wanting an RPG with a great story to pull me in. Also I hear Xenogears is another great Square soft RPG.

There's no harm in doing VI-IX like, as at least you'll get to feel the true progression of the series and they'll get more technically impressive as you go through them. Definitely play XII though, despite being so different it is one of the best games for me as the gameplay is fluid and the world is pretty expansive that makes for good exploration. I for one have never played much of Tactics, it was a bit like Disgaea and after playing so much of it that threw me off, I never got to appreciate the game or it's story.

Geluda, did you complete VIII? Not sure if you mentioned that. What are your thoughts on it? Should I really be looking forward to it? I read a little about it and it sounds so off the wall that I'd probably love it.

good game, can't quite recall ending, played it years ago, still have the retail.
    ...
the main char (speak not his name) is a proper tool!
i dunno what the script writers were thinking, but spoiled rich-boy...
he gets two tasty pieces of arse whizzed his way, on a fuckin plate no less...(a brunette with a border collie dog and a blonde wearing geggs and carries a whip to school...:concern: )
    and what does he do?
cry like some EMO kid, tied to his past that no longer a real factor to him in present day, DICK!
good game all the same, if 'off the wall' you want, it's there! :witless:

I did hear that, Amiga. Sq**** is kinda whiney. From what I've heard a lot of the protagonists are that way. I'm just excited to bond with the characters and see their development. Let's hope there are other characters in VIII that are more likeable. I know VI was the most ambitious in terms of the number of characters, so I'm sure they'll be someone I fall for.

Start with IV and just work your way up. IV has one of the best stories (although it is very straight forward). V has one of the best systems, then 6-7 is the best overall (depending on who you ask), then the rest all have their nice quirks. It's also better to play IX after you've played some past FF's. IX has a lot of little references to past games.

I think there's something about playing through the games in the order they were made. You get a feel of how the series evolved with time. There's also a little adage that the even numbered games were based on the story and the odd numbered games were based on the system.

Feel free to skip the NES ones though, they get outclassed by all the SNES ones.

^^ if you fancy an interval, FF crystal chronicles for ngc is pretty sweet. (then another for wii, haven't looked into it...yet!)
i would like full control over the game via gba BUT it require more than one human body, (up to five iirc)
sadly, not found a way to take control in 1UP mode using the gba as the pad.
you'll know dreamcast games using vmu units, this isn't really that different, except using a gba to take control and permanent menu/map screen on gba.
    ...
screw it, get em all, lock the door and whittle a year away. :smile-new:
    accomplishment!
