No really???? Never would have guessed But what I said is true ... I was just adding in an intersting early 360 tibit... well at least i thought so
Agree, its like they tried to make it look more classy and ended up being crappy:lol: Apparently the Elite has the same old chips but a better cooling system. The premium one thats coming after the elite will have the 65nm chips for sure...
No offense taken, each to their own and all that. The 360's for sure a marked improvement over the xbox 1, but i just can't get too excited over one that's black, i don't think it suits black. Anyways, I won't be getting one as I'm still a very happy bunney with my UK launch one which is still working well to this day.
According to the san jose mercury the X360 will have the 65nm chips which cuts some costs on MS side (that makes me think why the heck is going to be $479)
Wouldn't you just chuffing know it - my 360 bit the dust today with 3 red lights, so I've been on the phone to M$. Damn, why did I tempt fate like that Grrrrrrr.:crying:
Mine died recently (constant freezing) but I haven't found the strength to phone M$ yet. What'd they tell you (if you don't mind me asking )
I'm in the SOL category, but I thought they might repair for a price (hopefully less than a new one...).
I'm in the same boat. Right now I'm trying to find the best way to get a new 360 out of them instead of a refurbished one. I can't wait to hear the first story about someone who sends in an Elite and gets sent back a refurbished normal system. You just know it's going to happen.
What I dont get is what exactly is what gets broken? cuz if its some serious component like the CPU or the memory they just cant repair that... Yeah, they wont give you a LE model just like that. On the other hand, if the rumor is true those problems should end with the 65nm chips, cuz the heat output and power consumption is way lower. Hope is true, cuz I'm friggin scared of getting a defective unit...
Yeah - no probs. First they ask your name, then they basically asked the same questions that are on the xbox.com support part of the website about what colour are the lights on the power brick etc. I told her that asking these questions wasn't going to help because it's screwed and no amount of led light watching was going to fix it. She was quite keen to put me through to the tech support guys but I stood my ground. She asked the serial number of the unit and the date purchased (mines a lunch one so I said nearly 2 years ago) She agreed to accept it for repair and took my address - I'd already registered my 360 anyways and they obviously had those details on their screen. She said that I'd have to disconnect everything - all cables, the hdd etc, remove any disks in the tray and put just the 360 base unit in a plain box - NOT the proper 360 box. She then said that they would arrange UPS to pick it up and will therefore send some lables to stick on the box and that when I got the lables in the post (they did offer to send them via e-mail) that I should ring UPS to arrange pickup. There was no mention of price of repair whatso ever - looking on other forums the price looks like it's going to be 85 pounds. I *may* get away with it because it's a launch machine - but I'm fully ready to have to pay 85 quid. It sounds like you either get your unit back repaired or you get a refurb unit. It's rare that you get a new one, and you certainly won't get a black one... I've heard of people getting repaired ones back only to have them fail again - but the repaired ones are covered by a 90 day warranty - so if it does fail then hope it does it in that period and at least it'll be a free repair again. I got an email from xbox customer support informing me that they had taken my complaint and I should folow the next steps I'm told. I'll update you all when it's gone and come back. as for: That's exactly what they'll do - if the faulty component is a CPU etc they will desolder it and resolder a new one (and hopefully fit better cooling components and heatsink compound). It depends entirely what the fault is - but It's sounding like it's a very common fault. I think some guy with experience said it was just the BGA soldering was bad and that he's managed to fix quite a few just by removing the device reflow soldering it back on properly - but this is serious soldering that only professionals with the right equipment can do. It's so not a job for an amature modder for example.
I got a red light this morning, but all seems fine now. I've had it less than one month, so I'll probably be returning it to the store.
Are you sure? cuz as far as I know those things are soldered by a machine/robot, and most of the chips today just cant be soldered by a human. Therefore I dont get how they change those parts, and how in the world is cheaper to ship the board, pay a guy (in the US, unless they ship it all the way to china which is even more expensive) and then put it inside the case and ship it back to you. It would be far cheaper to just dump the motherboard and put a new one... EDIT: looks like the HDD is goin to be black after all...
Sorry for the double post but this just came in: The Elite is Official... Bad news however, it still lacks the new 65nm chips, so the overheating issues may continue, unless it has a new cooling system... It packs everything the premiun has in the same black color, plus the 120GB HDD and an official HDMI cable. If you ask me is not that bad at $479, unless is not your first X360...
The more I think about it the more I'm just not impressed. There just isn't enough added to justify that extra cost. You know what the first two things are that come to mind when I see that price? (A) That it doesn't have HD player (B) For $20.00 more I could get a system that does If Microsoft is going to raise the price then they really need to bulk up this package some more. The HDMI cable is a good start but isn't enough. Pack in a game, add an extra controller, some coupons for the HD drive. Do something. And what were they thinking selling the play and charge kit separately? That is a no-brainer and should have been the first they added. I don't know for sure but I think Microsoft made a big mistake that could end up selling as many 20 gig PS3's as they do 360 Elite's.
Yes – I am sure, I'm an engineer in a company that manufactures electronic equipment. It is possible to remove faulty components by hand using a hot air gun, but the process of soldering BGA components back onto a PCB is a lot more tricky (but can be done). Not something I would ever attempt, but some of my colleagues have done it when necessary. However the MS repair place will just use a jig to remove the BGA device, they will properly clean and prepare the PCB and use a jig to correctly offer up and set the new component. Apart from inter-layer track breaks which can sometimes write off a PCB if it’s too difficult to recreate the broken path, there aren't really many components that can't be replaced if found to be faulty.
I agree with Taucias. Having an HD player for 20+ bucks is a btter deal. I think MS is trying to milk consumers on the fact that its console is the most popular next gen console at the moment.
Yeah now that I think about it, is really a ripoff considering it will have the same cooling issues from the other models (since the chips werent updated) and like mqark said, they will probably replace faulty elites with normal white units... I really believe MS is trying to mimic the macbook with this.
