Someone would probably pay over $10 grand for it, I bet.

Few games have that kind of cultish following.

Has anyone noticed when retro video game prices skyrocketed? I remember that in 2010 I got Super mario bros 3 for $5. And that's from a shop that usually overprices things.

There are always many copies for sale on ebay and other forums, so I wouldn't call it rare. The supply is there, but just like with any high ticket item, you just gotta watch out for boots.

I think select games like Earthbound and a few Square PS1 rpgs like Xenogears have always been in high demand. For the 8 bit Nes era, it all begins I think with the AVGN. The most fascinating instance of a price on a game going up in value thanks to a web show is when Game Chasers kept pushing Little Samson. The game was always rare and in the hundred dollar range. After that show, it now averages six hundred dollars.

SMB/Duck hunt has been lately that one game that's always seen over-priced. Also speaking of mario, $40-60 for mario party 1-3 carts? I swear the N64 gets hit the hardest with garbage prices for its games.

SMB/Duck Hunt is literally the least rare game for the NES. I think if it's over $5 it's a ripoff.

I used to have 3 copies of that game, plus one of the standalone Super Mario Bros. I sold one of the SMB/Duck Hunt copies, so now I only have 3 copies of essentially the same game. They were all really cheap, one of them was like $1.50. Maybe one day they'll be worth trillions.

N64 is just crazy, luckily I bought the games I wanted to own a few years ago. Now they've at least gone up $20 each or so, and most of these games I enjoyed a lot were 3rd party.

Yeah, N64 is getting too expensive. Good thing, that I recently bought an Everdrive 64.
I would still like to have all of the Star Wars games CIB for the N64. Right now I only have Rogue Squadron.

I agree though there were a few titles I haven't picked up yet that I regret not doing so long ago and they, Conker's bad fur day, mario party(already own 2 and 3 and I bought 3 when It was 24 bucks), paper mario, harvest moon and mejoras mask.

N64 is weird cause there's still a ton of cheap systems out there, but a lot of games are more expensive than the console.

A good 75% of N64 games tend to be in bargain bins.

The expensive 25% is the typical Rareware/Nintendo stuff plus a few oddities (LE Clayfighter 63 1/3, Bomberman 64: TSA, etc)

That's not weird, almost ever console is like that.
When things are sealed & pristine, it gets different.

I was looking to sell a lot of gaming merchandise, & noticed that N64 games are pretty expensive, however. Majoras mask boxed for $120? Hot damn. Boxed Conkers getting pretty high, too.

The Internet with its ease of information & old game reviewers seems to be influencing things.

Not sure about the rest of the world, but here in Brazil the American version of SNES games are more expensive, Black Label USA PS1 games are starting to be expensive .USA Saturn games are also expensive here, but its funny that for less you can even buy an sealed japanese game.

Resident Evil from PS1 to the Gamecube are expensive, Nintendo games (Was lucky to pay an equivalent to 23 dollars in MK7 and SMW3D each), Monster Hunter for 3DS, Tales of series, NFS Most Wanted 2005 for X360, Manhunt for PC, and I think that 90s games for PC in their original print CIB are also expensive.

My cap obvious guess for Paper Box games, the fact that can get wear and/or that the cartridge could be stored in a loose condition, and the PC discs have an Jewel Case or disc sleeve made people to throw away the boxes and even booklets for more space.

I should have rephrased myself. There's more games that are more expensive than the system compared to other systems. You can get a ton of great PS1, PS2, Xbox, GC, etc games for less than the respective system, but there's a bunch of N64 games that are more than a console.

Yeah, a boxed Nintendo game (they did the paper boxes longer than anyone) goes for a ton more than a loose cart. And even in the states, some US Saturn games are more expensive than their Japanese counterparts (I got both Panzer Dragoon I and Zwei for like $40 shipped from Japan).

You do still have my sympathies. That thousand dollar PS4 must be killing you.

ANY first party NES title. Super Mario Bros was packed with almost EVERY NES and sold well over a million. Back before the retro gaming hype, it was seriously $0.25 at Funcoland. Now, you're looking at paying $5.00 for it, even when you adjust 25 cents for inflation that should still be less than a dollar. Super Mario Bros 3 was the best selling video game of all time until Halo 2, and yet it goes for $20! What the hell? It's common as sand in the desert!
