Sticking your chopsticks into your food at a 90 degree angle makes it an offering to the dead. Esp fun if ,like an ex girlfriend you do this while everyone is at the table and convert supper into an ojichan offering.

Handing food chopsticks to chopsticks is a no-no, that's how monks handle cremated bones.

Licking your chopsticks before eating means you want to have some "extra fun" with the person across from you.

Mothers will place their mouths over babies noses and suck the snot out to relieve congestion.

Blowing your nose at the dining table, or while eating is probably the worst thing you could do short of crapping on the table.
But you can usually get away with pissing in a small alley in full view.

You can get a large soda out of a vending machine for the same price as a small one of the same brand. It's all about how thirsty you are, and most people buy the small size.

Sometimes you won't find a floor "4" in a Japanese building. 4 can be read as "shi" which means death.
Similarly , never give a gift in a set of four.

If you go to meet someone at hachiko in tokyo, remember that during ww2 this peaceful statue that was partially paid for by donations from some amreicans was melted down to make bullet casings for bullets to kill americans. :fu

Most streets have no name. Hence all the mini maps in magazines.

Your parking space in parts of Tokyo will cost more than the car.
sometimes you aren't allowed to get a car unless you have a spot, or you take a train/bus to your car.

In the old days Japanese fire departments had a flag bearer. If they couldn't stop the flames from passing the banner, they all honorably burned with the building.

The train to narita runs to a lot of recreational places. Sometimes the door will open and you will see people fully decked out in ski, golf, hiking, and surf attire.

You can get an egg on your hamburger at mcdonalds.

    Re: Crazy things about Japan

I do this quite often in the house. drives my wife crazy :smt043

had my arse kicked a few times for this too :smt009

I always wondered what the hell they were doing when I saw that./ that's bloody discusting.

Yes, the japanese are really strange people. There I am getting a 500ml can of coke for the same price as a 350ml one while the guy next to me is buying the smallest one possible for the same price ! Freak ! Also you have to know that in some Tokyo train stations they rip you off when you buy a drink from the machine. THey are the same pricve as normal cans but only contain 200ml due to the super thin cans they use ! Bloody rip off !! Thank God living down in the sticks isn't like that.

yep, and those maps are pretty hard to follow at times.

Oh I love the Tsukimi burger. It'sa shame the buggers only sell it at certain times of the year. It's a burger with a fried egg and ham.

You shouldn't "pass" food with your hashi.

I don't think putting it down first would be very polite either. I know the Chinese etiquette is to use the reverse end of your chopsticks when taking from a shared dish. I think the bottom line is that you don't share food ;) Also don't forget to not stick your chopsticks up in rice, that'll get you scolded.

Dude... my old office was in Ark Mori... 14th floor. You have a lookout of Route 246 (Roppongi Dori). I saw a cab driver stop on the shoulder of the freeway (up top!), take a piss on the side of the road, and get back in his car and take off!

You can actually save money by buying multiple small sizes rather than one big one. They've got serious issues w/ this.

As for the food sharing. Japanese are much more prone to do it in restaurants than us. Many small dishes ordered where you grab whatever you want and put it on your dish. But yeah... I don't think I've ever seen anyone pass from one chopstick to another. Don't know if I could do it if I wanted to unless it was a very solid piece of food.

one thing i have to agree with the japanese on and admit that WE are odd for doing is that nose blowing thing... Why is it ok to blow snot out of your nose at a dinner table?? How did this become an acceptable practice?

Although i see now that the japanese are slightly hipocritical seeing as they are very offended when one blows snot in there presence, but are willing so manually suck snot out of another persons nose.. am I missing something?? And maybe the whole pop can issue is just testiment to how wastefull and fat we are as a country (USA).. Just because we can get more doesent mean we always should... An imbedded sence of not being wastefull seems to be a part of japanese society.

Well, sorry to say, but of all Western nations I think the US is most tight-assed on alcohol consumption. Not that we get alcohol out of vending machines, but you can get it almost everywhere else.
