Are you taking the piss or something ? Sorry if I sound pissed off. Nothing personal towards you but nothing annoys me more when some Japanese asks me if I'm American. Fuck, it's as if they think every bloody white person in from American. No, I'm English or British (meaning I'm not Scottish or Welsh) Not that I have anything against Scots or Welsh or Americans. It's just bloody annoying. Some soft cow in the hair salon though English came from America ! So I asked her what English people spoke and you know what she said? "I DON'T KNOW !!, IS IT GERMAN ?" Thick Bitch !

Anyway, back on topic after my rant. I came to Japan 6 years ago after visiting here 4 or 5 times before. Myself and 2 mates decided to give living in Japan a shot. We all came over with 2500 pound each (decent amount 6 years ago) and rented a place between us. 6 years later and I'm the only one left. The other two gave up after 2 years.

Prepare to be assimilated (or whatever they said).

Dude, try having the last name "England" but be from Texas. "So, you were born in England, but moved to Texas?". :smt067

Here's a strange thing for people visiting japan. Toilets have a two way flush. One direction has this mark (大) BIG while the other has this mark (小) LITTLE. I'm sure you can work out what each means :-D

You know Japanese credit cards are somwhere just below 30% interest?

US average is 5-19% (19 if you have terrible credit)

The Japanese weren't too keen on credit in the 80's, it will be
interesting to see how credit cards affect their economy once the words "personal bankruptcy" start to be common...

Credit cards really are, unless managed well, the worst thing for a person's financial wellbeing.

Yes, but life without one is difficult. As stated somewhere else here, I lived my entire professional life abroad. I come back, and have zero credit. No credit cards = no debt, but also means you're an Al Qaeda suspect. Credit cards means you're not a terrorist, but either have to excercise serious restraint, or be in debt.

Thats why when you do go. Go dressed up as one as well as your friends too and speak like cowboys. It'd be a funny site.

Ok, so maybe one of you Nippion Natives can explain the Japanese obsession with Super Deforming everything?

Does it have to do with overcrowding? Is it because land is so expensive that everything has to be made small (like that car wash) and SD is just a social manifestation of that in the popular culture?

Is it just becasue it looks cool?

I wonder, becasue one time I saw a poster for the Japanese release of "A Nightmare On Elm Street," and on the poster was a cute, super deformed little Freddy Kruger, with a big head and little claw, like he's Pikachu or something. It's like they take everything that is supposed to be scary, like Freddy or Godzilla, and turn it into something cute.

No offense, SD is cool, just wondering.

I always used to get shit like that when I used to live in England - people thinking I'm American because of my weird accent. My mother's from Ireland and my dad's from South Africa (not Afrikaans or anything), so I did have a really weird accent when in the south-west of England (i.e. farmer country). Though after living here for 7 years I've think I've lost the weirdness.

I don't know what's so odd about that. We have equally small car washes here too, and Ireland's not exactly overcrowded by any means (56 people per km², compared to Japan's 335), and they're probably just as common anywhere else in Europe.

I've never seen a car wash like that though. Honestly, if you didn't tell me it was a car wash I'd have thought it was some kind of crane equipment (like, to hoist your car up so they can work on the breaks or something.)

Not retail banks. I worked at Bank of America in Japan... yet, I'm still up the creek w/o a boat, b/c there's no retail banking. Just securities. Anyways, I got my yearend bonus in my new Hawaiian bank account. I'll be stopping by tomorrow to bitch about my credit.
