They're doing more stuff in the ground... problem is when they do, they back up already hellish traffic. Took me an hour to make a 15 minute cab ride home once in the middle of the night b/c they were laying some cable. This really only applies to the big cities though.

You don't really see the Japanese eating or drinking while walking. I was told it was common prcatice to drink all of your juice at the machine, then dispose of the can. To walk with it would be counsidered distasteful.

Hmm, maybe so but it's all neat and tidy plus wrapped up in plasic bags. There's also a rule that says you can't throw out rubbish until after 8pm so that the area stays clean. Or at leastthat's the rule in this city.

Err???? Not sure what you mean there. I see bins everywhere in Japan.

I think you're mistaken about the clinc. You can't smoke everywhere in Japan. For ecample at the train station there's a smoking corner which is the only place you can smoke. Same goes for many other places including childrens clinics. Mind you, every clinc I've been to doesn't allow smoking at all.

Not true at all. I used my JAL Visa card only two days ago in Lawsons

no it's not. The beer vending machines all have timers which switch them off at 11pm. If the machine you used didn't then it must have been broken. however you can buy beer at anytime of the day from the 24 hour stores such as Family Mart, Lawsons, 7-Eleven etc.

Both crows and rat have sharp teeth, beaks and claws to penetrate those bags. As if using plastic bags is a particular Japanese custom for wrapping trash. We do that here, too, only we then put the bags where they belong.

Perhaps Shimonoseki is a neater place than Tokyo. The only place with waste disposal facilities there would be the combinis.

That's just a way of speaking, it wouldn't surprise me if smoking isn't allowed there. Still, for a smoker it's a liberal country, except for in one single "ku", where you can't smoke freely in the streets.

That wasn't the case with my Mini-stop... In fact, cards didn't seem very useful at all in Japan, except possibly for Japan-issued ones.

    That's what I said. =)

Ah, yes Mini-stop is a pretty small chain of stores so they probably don't allow cards. Places such as 7 eleven, Lawsons, Family Mart and maybe Yamazaki daily all allow credit cards. I use my cards most of the time really :) Hard Off even lets people use US Dollars there plus you get your change in yen ! I gave them a 100 dollar bill yesterday and bought something for 800 yen :p Now I have no need to go to the bank and pay their rip off charges.

There are a few things that Japan is getting better at -- allowing people to use cards, and making sure people don't smoke. I've been to quite a few hospitals... you can't smoke in them, but just out side is okay. He's right about the bin thing in Tokyo... you're likely to carry an empty coke can across town before you find one.

every time I see those smoking room/lounge I can't help but thinking of those poor souls inside. Not only they are smoking their lungs away they also inhale - active and passive smoking in one go = easy way to get yourself in trouble later life I suppose...

I wonder if we bring that over here would make enough deterrence to others - seeing people packed with so much smoke you can hardly see inside... he he :p

if I'm in power I'd make law to every smokers carry sealed hamlet so what they smoke they will inhale as well. then we don't have to worry about smoking and non-smoking crap anymore... heh

Smoking is a way to make sure you don't live to be 100 and freeze to death alone and hungry because your caretaker robot was repossesed.

It's funny though, despite all the smoking the Japanese still have (insomuch as I am aware anyway) the best life expectancy in the world for both genders.

And the reason my friend, is Green Tea. Funny you mention those smoking boxes. My last cigarette ever was smoked in one of those in Narita airport. The harsh truth is though, they're not much worse than being in a bar.

    Oh just bugger that.
if I ever elected I will ration Nicotine needles so smokers can inject themselves... he he
and anyone caught smoking will be sentenced to work for anti-smoking campaign...

I don't against smoking as long as they only inhale and NOT exhale... :p

Let's not forget Japanese "energy" or "health" drinks

    Some contain:

    Nicotine
    Ephedra/ephedrine (pre methamphetamine compound)
    Herbals that act like uppers/stimulants

Some of these are illegal in the US, but if you're lucky you can find them at the local
Japanese grocers (yeah we have local japanese grocers here)

  20. No thank you. Cigarette smokers in public are already a bunch of inconsiderate jerks - I don't need to get a contact high walking through campus because some stoner doesn't care where his smoke is blowing.

Back on a relevant topic, have there been any problems in Japan associated with these energy drinks? I thought there was a big thing here a year or two back banning imports of Yellow Jackets and other psuedoephedrine/ephedra stimulants after there began being problems with people dying due to overdoses...
