Well, given the amount of money spent on Destiny it really could have delivered more. Also Bungie has plenty of experience making hallmark games. I do see your point, though. These aren't as bad as the opening OG Xbox games. Azurik, Blood Wake, Mad Dash Racing, Shrek, etc. There have been a few gems, but usually they're not the hugely hyped and widely anticipated AAA titles.
To be fair, if the original PSO (or even Version 2 for that matter) came out today it would likely be panned as a pretty awful game. Virtually no end-game at all. Meseta winds up being worthless and more of a hassle to deal with. Horrible horrible loot system. What? Another fucking Varista? ARGH!!!!!! And the system is tied to my character's name? Yippee! Four areas! (Eight in Version 2!) Hacking. Don't get me wrong, PSO was great a decade ago, but a decade has passed since then, and that type of game just doesn't age well with the constraints it had on it. Also, why PSO needed a monthly fee eventually I'll never understand.
I think PSO was trying a lot of new things. The idea of playing one game on multiple platforms was really only a thing in the past few years. And remember, Seganet didn't require a cost of its own (it was an ISP, so you didn't need an internet cost other than the phone line) (also I realize describing 90s internet was more difficult than I thought it would be). And obviously, with easily downloadable regular updates (I think Destiny has had at least 3, and many others get monthly patches at least) there would be a bit of balancing and the loot system would change (like the engrams in Destiny, now that I think of it). The hacking would probably be patched out, as well.
PSO ver 2 and the GC version required a monthly fee. Also, I realize PSO was great at the time, however, my comment was about it not being a good thing to compare a game to today.
I know, but there are a few superficial similarities (though, Destiny needs more cake). I was just pointing out that if PSO came out today it would be a lot more evolved than it was 10 years ago.
