How feasible would it be to edit the Dreamcast BIOS so it tries to boot from the serial port before/instead of the GD-ROM drive? Thus enabling direct boot of DreamShell from SD Card, without the need for any disc or the drive itself: a fully solid state Dreamcast? :033:

Now we can assemble some portable Dreamcasts without the gdrom drive -> smaller, lighter, more battery life -> hell yeah!

I see that the Neo Geo Pocket to Dreamcast link cable connects to the serial port of the DC. Could that be used to make a SD adapter? It's a lot easier to find than the link cables :)

THis cable could be used yes, but you still might have to desolder capacitors from the motherboard in order for it to works, so you can't expect it to work on any Dreamcat without opening it.
This is one of the main reason this cable might never see the light IMHO, as the buyer would still have to mod it's DC, and the SD-Cable is so easy to make that if someone isn't able to build his own one and needs to buy one, he probably can't remove the Caps neither.

    Cheers,

    FG

That is really impressive, seriously - but one (technical) question...

Why does it take so long to load? I figure that if it's reading from an sd card that it would actually be a lot faster? (like ps2 hdd loader, for example)

Is this a coding issue or a hardware issue?

Eitherway - it IS pretty damned amazing.

It's mostly a hardware issue. Random access will be a lot faster than on the GD, but you are still using the serial port for accessing the SD card. Even if you desolder the caps you are quite limited in speed. And even if you wheren't limited by the serial line a HDD reading unfragmented data is quite fast and will beat an SD card.

You can't, this game is incomplete, at least part of the main binary is missing from this dump, so you can't really use these data as of now.

However I can tell you a BETA of this game is curently being worked on getting dumped by someone somewhere somehow.

I am ordering up a small amount (20) of the MXIC chips needed to be able to flash a new bios onto the system. I only need about 4 or 5 of them. If anyone is interested in them as well let me know...This will be a *FUN* project ;)
