The GCN version had the best guest character ever; Link. That makes it win. However, SC5's Ezio definitely made a noble attempt and is a close 2nd.
The GC wasn't really underpowered. It was a more powerful console than the PS2 actually (a twice as fast CPU, slightly faster GPU, and more RAM) plus it wasn't as difficult to program for. The Xbox was stronger and easier to work on (basically being a PC), which helped it get ports from the PC.
I don't see this source. The sales figures I saw at vgchartz put the PS2 and GameCube sales in the US very close. The PS2 appears to edge it out, worldwide the PS2 version outsold it by a half million units. http://www.vgchartz.com/game/5713/soulcalibur-ii/ http://www.vgchartz.com/game/2116/soulcalibur-ii/
Soul Calibur for DC is probably my favorite game in the series, and I also really like II. I have the GC and Xbox versions of II now. I have my Xbox connected to a CRT computer monitor, and when I set Soul Calibur II to 720p, it displays in a weirdly-sized box on the screen, and I can't resize it enough to fill the whole screen. Playing it in 480p looks really good though. The GC version supports 480p too, but I do think the Xbox version looks a little better.
Soul Calibur 2 HD is my SCII right now. The GC version is the only SCII I don't have, I need to get a copy soonish and finish my SC Collection. I like the different weapons that Edge, 2,3,IV, and sort of V have and SC 1 did not have that so it's not my favorite for that reason. But graphically even for an early Dreamcast game it still holds up. The music too, SCIII rerecorded a lot of the SC1 music for a reason. Side question, as I was watching some videos on this earlier. Favorite Soul Calibur character? Tough one for me But I'll say Li Long as he's not a douche like Maxi is, and Taki for........well if you played SCII and saw her default costume you know why.
ZWEI had potential..........if they actually bothered to flesh out story mode so we could learn about these new characters
Kilik is my favorite, and him turning into another Edge Master was another reason why I didn't like V that much.
As far as the topic question goes, I would say the dreamcast could pull off a decent version of Soul Calibur II, however it wouldn't be a ps2 perfect or arcade (ps2 based system 246) perfect port as the system lacks some power that the ps2 based hardware had. I completely agree with everyone who said the Xbox version is best, if you run Soul Calibur 2 for Xbox via component cables in 720p or on the backwards compatibility of the Xbox 360 in 720p it rivals most of the newer games it just looks so sharp. I will agree that Link is a great character but not enough to win that version in my opinion, just a fun novelty to make owning that version worth it. As far as which game is my favorite. At this point as I have played all games for consoles and arcades it is kinda a close one. I enjoy Soul Calibur, 3 and 4 the best. Especially Soul Calibur 3 Arcade Edition for the Namco System 246 with all of its added characters and rebalanced move sets. The character selection in Soul Calibur 4 plus the bonus characters like Shura make it a great game as well. The original is just a classic on the original arcade board (which I did acquire recently) and the dreamcast version. Oh and just for fun here are a few videos featuring these versions that I made:
Is awesome how the original Soul Calibur pushes the System 12 hardware...Just compare it with Tekken 3..Namco certainly did things out of the 32 bit hardware league with this game, no doubt why they couldn´t port it to the PS1. You can really tell that all the graphic basis of the DC Soul Calibur is there (and look how amazing it looks, even today) ....I just wonder what would Namco do if they would have developed a SC (or a Tekken) with an engine built from scratch for DC and Naomi...
Whaaaaattt!...Does somebody has any aditional info of that?....Would you imagine that? As SC 2, i think DC has the power to handle Tekken 4, but with downgrades here and there, but not something too significant...
I think they would have had to rewrite it very heavily to get decent performance on the DC - simply because the original arcade version was designed for the PS2 based Namco System 246 - porting it to the GC and the Xbox was fairly simple, since both of those machines have more RAM and a faster CPU than the PS2 did. The DC has only half as much main RAM as the PS2 and the CPU is about 33% slower - because of its architecture, it's capable of giving very good results with relatively modest hardware, but the code has to be designed to play to its strengths. I don't think a code base that was basically designed for a PS2 would do this unless you put a lot of work into it.
