I'd like me one of those wonderful Hanzo boxes as well, please! I hope you're taking pre-orders for yet another batch? Count me in!

As a curious aside, I have a question. I was thinking about using one Hanzo box for my DC and yet another for my GameCube. But since my Wii plays gamecube-discs, and I just found a wii composite-to-hdmi upscaler on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0050RKH2Y/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ), this means that I can play my GameCube discs on a hdmi monitor through the wii without any fuzz. I just need this small adapter. At least in theory.

Having bought the upscaled, I'm not to impressed with the image quality. Not from the GC discs and not even from the Wii. I might be completely wrong here, but I thought an upscale from 480p to 1080p would just mean a more pixellated image - not a blurry one. But I find the upscaled image to be "soft" an unfocused. Is this to be expected from an upscale, even though the source image is progressive? Or is it just the adapter that is of poor quality? I.e., would it make a difference if I used a Hanzo connected to a vga-hdmi converter instead?

Sorry if this is a rookie question, I'm new to the whole signal-conversion thing.

 

Congrats on the mention on Tested.com! I've been lurking at this for a while now, finally decided to take the plunge.

Received my Hanzo today. Simply amazing!!

 

I am keeping a preorder list and putting all your names there, it seems that PCBs will be ready by the end of this month, so I will begin to collect payments when I am ready. I don't want you to wait too long. Last year people waited for 2 months for the first batches. Then I began to ship from the stock.


It's about that converter. it's a rip off lower quality one probably. I don't understand something though, does it use the component/rgb signals or composite? Composite sucks too.
I am very happy with my Gamecube VGA cable(converted from D-terminal/component cable). I use the Hanzo to that for adding the scanlines. I use professional plasma monitors and I can only use VGA or component. I can't recommend an HDMI converter now, I haven't tried any yet. Most of them suck, you should listen to recommendations from others before buying these crap things. I only know that Framemeister XRGB works well.

Those are all of the symptoms of a bad scaler. There are currently no good cheap converters unfortunately. Many cheap VGA-to-HDMI converters will act similarly, with varying degrees of blurriness, lag, and poor motion handling. The cheap VGA-to-HDMI scalers do seem to do better with higher resolution consoles like the Dreamcast however, and the Hanzo's scanliner sharpens things up pretty nicely again.

 

Been umm and arrrr'ing over this for awhile but I've decided I Need one !

I use it on Gamecube as well, however if you have a Cga-vga converter like that

you can use others as well. As a side note, my friend Stardragon told me that rgb modded n64 should have caps removed if there exists when using with Hanzo, picture quality affected a little...

Most rgb modded N64 use capacitors in the rgb-cable or on an circuit inside to boost the rgb-signal. Together with the capacitors from Hanzo the signal seems to loose power and the colors are darker. Even when scanlines are off. I am not sure, if the capacitors form N64 should be removed. As far as I know, especially the N64 with rgb on board and not used (like some models from france) need a boost circuit if you uses rgb. Otherwise the N64 gets damaged after some time. And I don't know if the capacitors of the Hanzo will do the same job. So I just ordered a normal Scanliner from beharius to do the trick. I can keep you informed, if this works better.

However, I just tested the Hanzo with another N64 with a different type if rgb-mod today and don't have the problems with it. Anyway, the scanlines the Hanzo do, are awesome. I use the cga-vga converter, beharius mentioned, and they are best with upscaling to 640x480 pixels. You can use the thicker scanlines the Hanzo can make with 1024x768 to get a similar effect, but they are harder. And the picture from a RGB-resolution doesn't gets much better when scaling higher. That are my experience so far.
