    I bet yours sounds killer.

I miss my WRX. Unequal length headers make a boxer 4 sound like a V8 with a fairly open exhaust.

I've only ever heard my car's exhaust once when my wife drove it in a carpark. It sounded lovely and deep, just how I like it. When I drive it'S difficuilt to hear the exhaust because of the engine roar. Not that it's noisey when driving normally but get out there on the motorway at an avarage of 140kmph (87mph) and that's when it starts to get loud.

Maybe tomorrow I'll see if I can get a sound recording using the video camera.

Yeah, I totally agree with barc0de on the technique being useful, but I also think that accelerator pedal control can do the same damn thing? I could see using the clutch occasionally to make adjustments or to save yourself from a wall or something... but as a normal useage item?

Then again I don't actually know how much a clutch wears down as time passes, or maybe how many seconds a clutch would last at some rpm and some ammount of average pressure...

Shoot, I'm going to do that right now! I've already got some driving videos up on youtube but... I talk too much in them. I'm gonna see what sort of laptop+mic setup I can do. At least get a mic in the hatch area, it might resonate pretty well. Then I can mix the camera mic and the autonomous mic...

Edit/update: Ok, two point and shoot cameras with decent video and a laptop with a nice headset mic did not turn out anything special. Too much road noise. Or maybe my car just isn't BEASTLY enough. I need to find a sacrificial mic I can actually hang out the back hatch or tape to the bumper... Hmm. One of those stick-kinds, even if it'll sound probably pretty crappy?

I've mounted a CVS camcorder to my front bumper in my old Accord and now my 3000GT, the honda sounded even more anemic, and the 3000GT sounded less than spectacular.

For one, you need a sound source at the back end of the car also, because otherwise you don't get any exhaust sound. Also most cameras/mics suck ass at picking up low frequencies.

here is the 3000GT video... (stock before any mods)

Well, I tried last night to get a good video. While the image kicked ass the sound wasn't that good due to too much road noise at high speeds. I'm going to give it another try over the weekend though with two mics. One at the front and another taped to the back bumper above the exhaust. I just need a device capable of recording two sounds at once.

PS: Actually, How about a video of my driving at about 190 - 200 kmph down the motorway? Then again you probably wouldn't get a good sound due to the wind noise. Country lanes may be best. lower speed but better sound.

It's been fun driving a manual for the last 7 months. I'll probably never go back. I have no stereo in my car so it's just me and the roar* of the engine.

    *more like a murmur.

Why not try putting the mic under the hood?

Maybe one under the hood and one near the tailpipe, at most. I think we're more going for exhaust noise, as that's likely the loudest in decibels for people not in the car.

Y'know, gotta see how badass you sound to everyone. :D:D

I couldn't find a suitable mic yet today. Bummer. I used to have a really nice older lapel mic but... NO idea what happened to it.

nice video regarding the position of the camera. I'd like to do something like that but I'm afraid that the camera will drop off and smash.

OK, so I had a look around the hose for mobile recording devices. I've got two video cameras, one of which has Dolby Digital audio which does pick up bass very well however that's the new High Def' camera so I don't want that under the bonnet / hood nor taped to the back of the car.

Then I have the Digital Camera but that's pretty poor at low frequency sounds so I'll probably have to go for my MP3 player with a mic connected to the AUX. Not too sure how well that will sound. I'll give it a try tomorrow but I really want a video to go with it.

record both. Snap your fingers or clap your hands a few times near the camera and the mic to a steady beat so you can sync up the sound to the video. edit that out, of course, and mute the camera's audio track or just mix it if necessary?

This is an older video I had, quality is shit but it's a better sound. I've been looking into an audio recorder and the cheapest I could fine is $150. There are handheld voice recorders but I don't know how suitable they are for capturing a wide range of sounds besides voice.

I just got pulled over for the first time today and was issued my first speeding ticket. First time in 6 years of driving. I blame this thread.

For that price you can get an old laptop, maybe a used netbook, and have more fun. Though... then you wouldn't have a decent mic necessarily... nevermind.

 welcome to my world  Actually I've said this a million times, the speed limits are stupidly low in Japan so you could easily get a speeding ticket on a push bike!

OK, I've got a plan. I'm going to strap my digital camera to the air intake under the number plate to get some great close to the road footage and hopefully a decent enough engine sound. I'll also connect a mic (not so good though) to my MP3 player and record the exhaust sound by placing the mic under the back bumper. To sync it all I'll beep my horn twice so that I can line up the audio tacks when editing later on.

I have no idea how good it will sound because of the equipment but at least it should look fast. I'm aiming to drive at least 100MPH (160KMPH) on the motorway section on the way home tomorrow evening and hopefully if traffic is low about 60MPH (100KMPH) on the twisty road. I'll only be able to do this if traffic is very light though. I don't want to be causing any accidents.

Well I did a short test today. I couldn't find any small microphones that were not attached to a headset, and I'm not going to drive around with a headset hanging out the back of my car. I've got a couple of nice higher dollar mics but... not going to risk it. yet! (I suppose maybe with liberal ammounts of tape and stuff similar to... well you'll see below) Though what I tried was still not completely inconspicuous!
I'll definitely try again when I can find a mic I don't mind risking.
    Here's the setup:

    Front camera:
Canon SD1000, clamped under the passenger headrest. No picture of that because it's pretty self-explanitory.

    Rear camera:
Canon SD450 (A camera I got for free, I used to acquire broken cameras when I worked at a camera store last year all the time. Get enough similar models, IE I took all the SD series, and frankenstein them together. I wouldn't be out much if this fell off at 40mph... though my dad would be sad he wouldn't have a pocket digi to borrow anymore, haha!)
I made a cage out of bailing wire (just general purpose, decent gauge, stiff but hand-bendable) and then wrapped the camera in two napkins to keep it from rattling around, as well as keep wind off the microphone.
I left two long lines of wire from the cage and wrapped them around the hatch catch thing. Whatever that's called. You see it. Then taped the entire unit down with a fair ammount of duct tape so it wouldn't flop around, and give me a little more reassurance.

It worked great, as in the camera mounting. Very steady!

Check the minorly edited video linked below. I just used random cuts from each camera for the video.
All audio is from the rear cam, as the interior one was just too noisy to be useful.
Near the end of the video, I pull into a grocery store parking lot. I could have sworn I saw my oil light come on (well, flash once really fast) so I decided I should really check that out. I was right at the low mark... which concerns me a lot. I am probably due for a change, but I JUST had the entire engine rebuilt (... hydrolock in May... fuck big trucks plowing through 6-inch water and sending a tsunami into my CAI... but that's another story) and I'm confused why it would be that low. 'Shit should be like new now!

Anyways. I got a surprising ammount of bass frequencies, so if you're on laptop/crap speakers it'll probably sound pretty boring:

it's 35 mph EVERYWHERE around here. it's horrible. the only time the speed limit changes are when you get on the freeway. even then it's only 60.

    EDIT: Nice vid alecjahn!

alecjahn fantastic steady camera set you have there!! Good going. I'm going to have my work cut out to better that. I don't want to be taping crap all over my car you see. So I'll probably stick with a front only cam mounted under the number plate using those plastic tie things that don't come lose once they are fastened.

The sound on your videos was also pretty good. I could easily hear the base! Did you get that sound via the camera?

Yeah, the soundtrack was 100% rear camera.

I was lucky and didn't get any residue on my bumper. Then again it was only stuck there for the few minutes.
Zip ties? Man, that's a pretty damn good idea. I keep salvaging those from stuff when I find long ones (stick a needle in them and release the lock). Resources! Resources!

With my subwoofer all the way up it sounds like I've got a glass pack or some other dumb muffler on there. Really, it's pretty reserved! Unless I'm punching it, of course. :D

I only got up to 50, second gear, so it wasn't too exciting. There's nowhere to really have fun around here. There's one stoplight on the highway a bit west that I know of, followed by a bridge so... that's a good comfortable, 100% cop-free 0-80mph or maybe 90.

    I'm a bit paranoid. :D

I look forward to seeing your attempts, Yakumo.

that's still faster than japan. Most roads here are under 50kmph and the motorway is 80kmph. F*ing stupid. By the way, 1.6km is 1 mile.

Wow, that's some good sound then.

No, to be honest it didn't sound that bad. I can't stand it when some ass puts a whopping big exhaust pipe on a turd car with fake "Butterfly" flaps in it to give a horrid roaring sound.

My car is also quite reserved with it's low pitch bass sound. It only really gets noise from the boxer engine when you rev the shit out of the engine say at around 5000rpm to 6000rpm in 3rd gear.

If I can I'll do some motorway footage at 100mph but there's nothing really great about the sound at that speed, just looks cool.

I was going to do some today but it's been throwing it down since morning. far too dangerous to drive fast in such heavy rain plus the camera would probably get wrecked. Fingers crossed for tomorrow!

Man, I love driving in the rain. Carefully of course, and sans-equipment destruction! I always get the back seat and door pillar wet from keeping the window down regardless.
