I dont understand all the automatic hate around here lol....i drive a auto all day (a bus) and i used to have a 3.0 turbo toyota supra and if you drive them right they can be as good as a manual and in some cases even better.

Video coming soon!! Just encoding it now then to edit it.

Here's the set up I had. At the front was a panasonic Lumix which recorded a fantastic video although only at 30fps which doesn't do the image of speed any favours I'm afraid. Also the sound from here is awful due to wind noise. A real shame because the roar of the engine is lovely.

Around the back next to the exhaust I have a Creative Labs ZEN MP3 player. thsi also has a built in mic that's surprisingly very good however too sensitive so the deep base of the exhaust just sends it in to a fit once it hits a certain frequency. Still, you can sort of get the idea of sound.

OK, video uploaded. I've added it to my server to keep the original 640 x 480 screen size. After encoding the video to flash it's lost a bit of image quality but still good enough I'd say.

In the end I dropped all the audio from the front camera so everything youhear including the door close and engine start is from the little Creative Labs ZEN MP3 Player that was around the back under the car.

Course - From my driveway to the sea in just over 5 minutes (with traffic light stops edited to quicken the pace)

    ENJOY!!

Internet Explorer users may find that the video will only play once or possibly not at all due to the browser messing up my site. Fire Fox and Chrome users will have no problems at all.

Woo, even if the audio was bummy it was awesome to see the locale!

Ah, I love this. Now I feel like doing another, since it's daytime out. Maybe I'll see what sort of front-mount camera I can whip up this time, and maybe a variation of the rear mount...

Also @yakumo, what did you edit out on the picture of your muffler?

    Ok, here's the latest.

I don't like putting these on my YouTube, then all my subs watch them and I really don't care. Don't feel like making another account there or elsewhere though, right now... so it'll have to do.

I watched the raw vid just now. WOW did it pick up the sound of the intake! It's even too loud for the camera, it distorts just a little bit. It's neat how quiet it gets when you close the throttle but are still at a mid-high RPM. Sounds like I went into neutral.

I didn't edit it at all, so if ~10 minutes is too long for people to care about, I've made a list of annotations/key points. :D

    0:40 - I leave the driveway
0:50 - that's my mother in the Jeep coming at me. "Hey...! I'll be back... shortly?"
then I drive through the neighborhood, a bit boring.
    2:40 - I gun it a bit. I guess.
5:15 - Stoplight. Watch this one. The light was DEFINITELY red and the Ford Escape and Volvo wagon decided to run it and make their left turn. You can see me creeping forward the whole time. I've never seen a combo like that! In retaliation, I sped off and shifted like a goon. Goodbye to a little more of my clutch.
6:30 - I'm coming up to the highway, I figured I'd get on it for a mile then get off. Pointless, but then I can go fast! By the time I got to the top of the ramp, I was doing almost 70 (limit is 60mph) and there was an RX8 (... or maybe it was a new MX-5... don't remember) right next to me, going the same speed. wtf? I continued accelerating to about 85 then exited. I bet people thought I was crazy, speeding up and by then immediately getting off. :p
9:16 - Drop into 2nd @ 30mph. I got the revs matched pretty well, surprisingly.
Then I eventually turned left into my favorite neighborhood within many miles, but I suppose the camera decided it didn't want to go any more and shut off. The card wasn't full, the battery wasn't dead. Hmm. Oh well!

When it's done uploading, the vid should be found here:

Beetling around Athens in a little hatchback would be fun with a manual gearbox, just like GTI Club. For long trips on the highway it's not as desirable. That's the real world for me. Unfortunately everything is a lot further away in the US than in Europe, at least from my experience. It's two very different worlds of driving.

If you go race driving then of course it's a whole different story, but almost no one here does that. AFAIK you've only had a car for a year or so. I'm guessing you're not out on the saturday track in it.

I'd kill to be able to say to myself "I think I'm going to drive to France" or if I'm feeling really cocky, find find my great grandparents' plot in Luxembourg (it can't take that long to find, HAHA).

Yeah, where I live is pretty light looking. There's some narrow old roads as well as modern ones such as the one on that video I made. The area where you live looks so green. Nice clean air :)

It's got my car's numberplate number on it so I blacked it out.

Great vid! around 5:45 you can really hear the sound of that engine really well. How did you capture such good sound? Did you cover the camera in tissue again?

Yeap, this time was a full sheet of paper towel, with an X cut for the lens to come through, thenwrapped around and another X cut for the next wrap. I was really surprised how well it sounded! It picked up more than I expected... which makes me wonder what I sound like to other people when wide open, haha!
I guess next will be the front bumper mount and the back at the same time. I wonder how the two audio recordings will mix together...!

Here's another video I filmed a few weeks back. It was at 10:30 pm on the way home from visiting a friend. I was hoping for the road to be much more empty so that I could really let lose but no such luck.

I've also subtitled the video because in places it's hard to work out what I'm saying due to wind noise. At 100mph (160kmph) it gets quite noisy inside the car.

Yes, that would be awesome. The roads in the USA absolutely suck. Nothing like the driving experience you'd get in western Europe.

Ahah! I laughed so hard as you explained you're hand-holding the camera just after doing 100 in a tunnel. I assume it's probably not that bad, hah!

My previously mentioned ex-coworker-with-an-STi (don't know the year, probably identical) did a rev-calculated 17Xmph in his.
Then his engine ate shit and had to have Subi put in a new one.
It's a good thing he was a GOOD salesman, making more than most college graduates, or else he would have been screwed. He had to drive a friend's shitty big Infinity fatmobile for a week, though, which was pretty hilarious.

Anyways, awesome vid. I might do a double bumper-cam one tonight on my way to the bar. Hmm!

No, not really. Doing 100mph in my car doesn't feel twitchy at all. The car stays right where you want it so using 1 hand to drive isn't that hard. Anything above 120 though and things start to get twitchy. Two hands are a must at that speed.

170 odd mph!!? That's very fast! I'd never take mine that far. Even when I did 135mph I could tell from the engine sound it was time to stop. I could have got more out of it, say 150mph but it just didn't sound healthy.

hahaha, now in Japan when ever I take my Subaru to the shop to get fixed or checked on they give me an equivelent car to drive for free. They always end up being shift automatics (like an arcade game's way of shifting) but better than driving a heap of crap. The last time I was given a turbo charged Forester :)

Looking forward to it mate. I'll have to find a better way of doing sound before I make another video.

Try my wrapping trick, a piece of cloth or whathaveyou. It seems like it might just muffle the sound enough? But then it will definitely cut the high frequencies a lot more than the low, which might come through and distort anyway. Hmm.

Does your mp3 player actually have an input jack, or just the built-in mic?

I'm making another cam cage as we speak. Woo!

My MP3 player does have a AUX in but it's one of those extra small headphone like ports. I have nothing of that size :(

Looking forward to your new video!
