I spent 5 hours today looking through 50 odd video tapes for the early Saturn footage that I have. Believe it or not, the fist video I checked was one of the two which I own. Sadly I haven't found the second tape yet but I will continue my search on Monday. Anyway for your viewing pleasure we have a photo of a Daytona USA without textures on background objects and a photo from an early build of Mansion Of Hidden Souls. I also took a few movies with my brothers cybershot camera. Unfortunately I don't have the equipment on my mum's PC to rip the movies from the video tape. So the cybershot 15 second jpeg movies without sound was the best I could do. Enjoy!!

All movies must have their extentions renamed to .mpg otherwise they won't play.

I'll make real movies once I return back to Japan.

Sadly yakumo all the links are broken. But daytona usa looks pretty good without textures. Even changing extentions directs you to an image hosting site. Can't wait for the videos.

Yeah, you have to right click and save them to your hard drive.

Yakumo, you know how to encode a dvd to mpeg with a graphics overlay?

Im not yakumo, but I know of a few methods. If you want to extract via the graphics overlay you can use found in I belive snap it is the name, maybe its clip it. SOmething along those lines, also hypersnap dx may be able to handlke that as well. It should encode to its own propriety format and then you can take tmpegenc and convert it.

I wonder why Ecco was canned two times: on the 32X and on the Saturn...

Ok, on the 32X they canned Ecco to produce Kolibri instead, but why on the Saturn too?

Hmm, I do but it takes ages because of my PC's CPU (1.4ghtz) I use Nero image studio to convert the DVD files to MPEG then use Virtual Dub to add the graphics over the top such as the "Segagaga Domain" logo some of the video's I've made in the past. It's a long and slow process though. I'm sure there must be an easier way.

I just found an old UK Sega Power magazine that has info on Daytona USA for 32X, plus some early pics of Ecco in the Saturn too. Expect pics coming soon :smt023

Ecco wasn't exactly a success. A quirky game, but not a success.

Besides, sega was then an arcade oriented company. Ports seem common sense.

Not really, because to add a logo, you have to decode and encode the entire video, so that the logo can be inserted. And software encoding can be dogslow, so there's not much you can do short of upgrading to a faster processor. Instead of putting a logo on top of the actual video, perhaps you could create a still image that would be on screen for X number of seconds before the actual video? It wouldn't eat too many bits, since it wouldn't be in motion, and you might not have to reencode the entire video.

I have tried just to add a logo at the begining of a movie for a few seconds only to find that some shit ripped off my movie by just edditing the logo off. Bastards. So from now I leave my logo running through the whole movie.

I was sure you were going to say that, he he he ;) . I had the same problem time ago when I published some videos on Internet, so I also had to put a logo in every frame.

The main problem comes when the pics or videos which you're publishing come from other fonts, like some of which you've on your website. I did that only twice and I received a beauty letter from SEGA of Europe reminding me who are the original owners. Take care about that ;) .

Yeah I look forward to seeing Ecco Saturn pics too,I would love to find that game in beta form as well as I am a huge fan of the ecco series. The dreamcast version was an amzing game with an incredibly tough challenge, pure Sega brilliance. Was the Saturn version in 3d or was it using the Saturn's amazing sprite hardware??There is still no console to touch the saturn when it comes to sprite's in my opinion.

Yesterday, I was taking a look to two videos about 32X and Saturn but I think they hadn't anything too interesting, at least, the firs one. The second one showed some videos of "Mistery Mansion", "Daytona USA", "Virtua Fighter"... Not much.

I think I should do better taking a look to my old magazines collection. It's easier to find curious pics than videos.

    Salutes ;) .

Sega sent me a Saturn video tape in the mail around (Spring of 1995 I believe). I guess they mailed them to registered Genesis and 32X owners in an effort to upgrade them to the Saturn. "See your nearest games retailer for a special demo session invitation" was the statement listed on the enclosed documentation...though I never took them up on the demo offer as I was away that Summer.

IF you recall, the very first Saturn ads in America featured some hideously ugly bald-headed woman (and a few "celebritites" like Ice Cube, etc) and sure enough, she was featured in the this video. The early footage was pretty underwhelming (especially the Daytona and Hockey footage) and I had serious doubts about buying the Saturn after seeing this.

I'll see if I can find the tape. I know I still have it.

    More early stuff

I was showing my brother the Saturn tape that I have found so far when I noticed a better glimps of Daytona USA in it's beta form. The picture below shows that the Sonic wall has no textures plus many other stuff is missing such as trees, traffic cones and the starting line. From this screen shot it looks as if the early beta of Daytona had some really bad pop up issues.

    Daytona USA

It's hard to tell from that last image (because of the distortion), but I'm fairly sure that this is from the same early demo once shown in an issue of Sega Saturn Magazine. AM2 apparently had a full conversion of Daytona USA running on the final Saturn hardware in the system's high resolution mode, though course textures had yet to be added. The cars looked absolutely brilliant, but to get the game out on shelves in time for the Saturn's advanced release date the programmers had to make some major sacrifices - the display mode was an obvious loss, along with the speed. I'm sure that anyone familiar with Daytona on the Saturn will know just how bad the PAL version was, and the increased borders were added to prevent any further speed loss (it was supposedly either the speed or screen size that would be affected, and AM2 wisely chose not to slow the game down any more than was necessary)!

Thanks for sharing this amazing footage with us - who needs the televised VF3 tech demo now? I sure don't, as these give much more insight into the earlier stages of the Saturn's life. If only someone could find that clip of Panzer Dragoon taken from a Silicon Graphics workstation...
