    Cool, I have this magazine.
I was very impressed with Aquanote and Ridge Racer when I read this magazine.

definitally not. it was already said to be the arcade version.

anyone familar with the System 22 Arcade Ridge Racer and the Playstation version can easily tell that was the arcade version. the texture mapping is high resolution. the color is significantly higher than the PS1 RR, as well as the screen resolution, its 640x480. all tell-tale indications of System 22 arcade graphics. the PS1 Ridge Racer looks a lot worse, technically, even though it was concidered an outstanding conversion of the arcade, though, it was rediculasly called "arcade perfect" by some magazines.

btw, the Playstation 'High Spec' Ridge Racer from 1998 that came with RR4 looks alot closer to the System 22 Arcade game, because it is 60fps and 640x480, has better shading and lighting, although still, its not identical to the 1993 System 22 Arcade Ridge Racer.

p.s. - can anyone host the full Daytona video, I'm dying to see it.

bingo. both the Saturn and the 32X (and the unreleased Jupiter) have a commen ancestor, the GigaDrive, which had been discussed in game magazines as far back as summer-fall 1990. GigaDrive was thought to be based on Sega's System 32 arcade board. obviously 32X and Saturn are somewhat different, as obviously many changes had been made by 1994.

All the machines until dreamcast were based on their arcade boards.

I think all the modern console systems have "brothers" on the arcade systems

    - Saturn - ?? System 32 ??
    - Playstation - System 11 / System 12 / System 21
    - Playstation - System 246
    - Dreamcast - Naomi
    - Xbox - Chihiro
    - Gamecube - Triforce

    almost, Johnny

    - NES - PlayChoice 10 arcade
    - Genesis - System C-2, Mega-Tech, Mega-Play arcade
    - Saturn - Titan ST-V arcade
    - Playstation1 - System 11 arcade
    - Dreamcast - Naomi arcade
    - Playstation2 - System 246 arcade
    - Xbox - Chihiro arcade
    - Gamecube - Triforce arcade

the playstation is not the same as System 21. the System 21 is Namco's equivalent of Sega's Model 1. both flat shaded polygon machines. the System 11 is Playstation's only real brother in the arcade. PS1/System11 is inbetween System 21 and System 22 in power. the System 12 is a souped up System11/PS1 but is still not as powerful a System 22. btw, there were several other Playstation based arcade systems. Capcom had the ZN-1, Taito had FX-1A. well, actually some of these were closer to System 12 than System 11/PS1, but all were based more or less on PS1.

The Saturn's direct brother for arcades is the Titan ST-V. the System 32 is much older and weaker than Saturn/Titan ST-V. but the System 32 was the starting point for Saturn's development, as the GigaDrive.

Negora - wow, those Ecco the Dolphin screens look much too good to be on Saturn. even the Model 2 board couldn't do that at 60fps or 30fps, as it looks like it has gouraud shading. the Model 3 could do it in realtime, but Model 3 was not around until 1996. so I say those Ecco shots were probably prerendered CG. unless, its a still 2D image on Saturn which is totally possible.

they sure are pretty to look at :smt033 thanks very much for sharing all this

Where did this pre-production Gold Saturn come from, and how pre-production was it? I've got a shot, in a small advertisement, of a very similar Saturn, but it's Silver (and looks a lot better). I think that has been discussed earlier in this thread... just thought someone would've posted a shot by now, as there are images of it out there.

I know that System 11 is the "real" brother of the PS1. I just mentioned System 12 and System 21 (a.k.a. "The Polygonizer" ) because if i'm not mistaken they started projecting the PS1 when the System 21 was being last used by Cyber Sled (1993) and Air Combat (1992). remember that System 21 was first used on 1987, so it was a really old board.

You are right about System 12, being a upgrade of System 11. It's like System 256 (or it is System 258?), that is just an upgrade to System 246. And yes, i completely forgot about Capcom ZN-1 and Taito FX-1A. :smt023 I also forgot the Konami GQ and the Konami GV boards.

Oh, and what about Taito FX-1B? It's also a "brother". Some games were ported to the PS1, like Fighters Impact (crappy fighting game) , G-Darius and Raystorm.

We also forgot Sammy Atomiswave, being a "brother" of the Dreamcast. :smt023

I''m starting to like this talk about arcades. I really like arcades! :prayer: For me, they always were technology pioneers.

Too bad this difference isn't so high when compared to consoles / PC's

Hola Giga Drive. Many people have doubts about that screens and I think it's normal... I could watch the video and I can say it isn't so marvellous as it look likes there. It moved very softly, but excepting dolphins and the ground, the rest was 2D sprites ("low" quality) The video also mixed several CGs but they were enough different to the real game to notice that. SEGA has been too used to mix some CGs in promotional videos but, in this case, she left this aspect cleared ;) .

There was some Ecco site (that I can't find anymore for the life of me) that had a section dedicated to the 32x and Saturn games. They managed to show that all pictures from those versions was from a pre-rendered intro movie, which IIRC was all that was ever finished.

Well, considering Naomi and DC came out at roughly the same time, and there are tons of Naomi->DC conversions, but not one Atomiswave->DC conversion, you'll probably not get too many people agreeing w/ you on that one. I'd say the Naomi is the DC's Big Brother, whereas the Atomiswave is (due to only having a couple of good games) an ugly red-headed step-cousin.

Yes, but if we are talking in a hardware level, the Atomiswave is closer to the DC than the Naomi is. Naomi has more memory while the Atomiswave is just a DC in a Arcade design.

With less memory and a couple of other corners cut, no? Sorry, I don't follow arcade HW faithfully. I remember reading it's a trimmed DC, whereas the DC is a trimmed Naomi.

    Until Sammy
1: Makes better games for Atomiswave
2: Puts them on the DC

I'll refuse to see the connection, even though I know technically it's there.

No, according to Sammy (see here http://www.sammyeurope.co.uk/pdf/atomiswave-system.pdf) it has 16MB of ram, the same as DC.

Maybe we can consider the Atomiswave the DC's little brother, while the Naomi is the older sister (Naomi means beauty, so it has to be a female hehe)

actually, from what I understand, no, the MegaDrive/Genesis is closer to System C-2 (or System C), Mega Tech and Mega Play. those arcade systems are all based on Genesis/MD with some modifications. the Mega Tech or Mega Play can play Genesis/MD games in modified cartridges. the other can play Genesis/MD and Master System games. edit: the System C-2 has a slightly faster 68000, 10 MHz and one chip is from the System 16 board.

The Genesis/MD is conciderably less powerful than the older System 16 even though the Genesis/MD was derived somewhat from the System 16. The Genesis/MD has about 2/3 the sprite pushing ability, 80 sprites instead of 128. Genesis/MD has far less color, 64 out of 512 instead of the System 16's 4096 out of 32768. the Genesis/MD also lacks the hardware zooming/scaling capability that System 16 had.

The System 16, with its far greater color capability, conciderably more sprite pushing power, decent hardware scaling, and faster CPU, compared to Genesis/MD, I think the System 16 rivals if not surpasses the SuperFami/SNES in many ways. although SuperFami/SNES had 4 background layers compared to the 2 in System 16 and Genesis/MD, and SuperFami had hardware rotation and other FX that System 16 didnt have. but System 16's 10 MHz 68000 probably balances things out with the SuperFami/SNES.

right on Johnny. I totally agree. nice post btw.

The System 21 'Polygonizer'... I forgot that had been used as far back as 1987 (or was it 1989) in Drivers Eyes.

the Taito FX-1B, I think, was a further upgrade of FX-1A, like System 12 over System 11. but could be wrong.

Also the Capcom ZN-2 was some sort of upgrade from ZN-1

going back to Taito, they also had their G-NET system, partly based on PS1, but also partly custom.

I dont have all the facts on these systems. too much to remember. I try :smt033
