Well, when the PS2 was announced they showed a Demo version of Gran Turismo. It was simply GT 2 (PS1) running on the PS2 hardware (using it's power features).

    Here it is:
    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

It was announced to be Gran Turismo 2000. The game was being already developed, when on 2000's PlayStation Festival, some demos were given away before the console was released to the public. At that stage, the games was so early in development, that the actual look of the game was very poor.

This is the demo disc i'm talking about:

Some screenshots of Gran Turismo 2000 (Early builds):

IGN even did a feature comparing the evolution of GT 2000 (from the demo disk i mentioned) till it was renamed and released as GT 3: A-Spec (final version). It's very cool because it shows lots of pics with a major evolution of the graphic department. Too bad the videos don't work. :(

Anyway while the game was evolving, they decided to change it's name:

PS: By the way do you know why it has A-Spec on it's name? After it's release, PD wanted to release B-Spec, a feature that ended up on Gran Turismo 4.

    GT2000

    Hey guys,

I have a disc from PSX Festival 2000 back home - CD-r with handwritten "Grand Turismo 2000" and a date which I forget. On the disc are a bunch of images and video from GT2000, but it's not playable. I'm currently overseas, but when I get back home in June I'll try and throw some of these up for you. If anyone is interested, I have a ton of press goodies from that show - those sorta-film-slides with screenshots for most of the Jap launch games and a few of the big early titles (Dark Cloud, etc.) are pretty cool too.

Hey Kevin, remember me? We talked about the PlayStation book some time ago (i even helped you with some pictures). By the way how's the book progressing? (You didn't post here for some time, that's why i'm asking).

Anyway, i would love to have those kind of stuff, specially if it's of Gran Turismo.

On second thoughts, if the date on that second tape is correct then we're probably looking at no more than video footage of the arcade VF3 - probably the early Model 3 tech demos seen at the '96 E3 or later as part of the Dreamcast version as a bonus feature and later on the "History" disc that came with the first Japanese release of Shenmue II. However, if these years only apply to the original trademarking of VF and its third installment (which seems likely considering that '93 is also mentioned) then we might just have the long-rumoured-but-never-seen Aoi character movement demo once supposedly demonstrated backstage at the 1998 Tokyo Game Show. I can only hope that this proves to be the case, as I've seen that coin-op footage being mistaken for the first genuine Saturn footage too many times...

That Aoi demo is no rumour, it's real but the chances of us or anyone outside Sega Japan ever seeing it now are next to none :-( The character was smaller than the Model 3 version plus the background was plain black. Just a character demo, that is all. AM2's Digital Dance mix was rumoured to be a very early build of the character models that they were going to use in the first rendition of Saturn VF3.

I know that the Aoi tech demo is real, so perhaps my choice of words in that last message was a little poor. There's a rather curious article in the news archives of UK: Resistance from 1997 that reports directly on Sega Europe's "infomercial" televised in the UK which supposedly included (arcade?) footage of VF3. These details aren't exactly anything new as I've been trying to find out more about this for quite a while, but at least we can determine the day and time of this extended advertisement's broadcast. Also, it's suggested that the same video was being played around this period - late '97 - in Game stores around the country. This might be a very (and I do mean VERY) long shot, but I've got my fingers crossed that either a former employee of Game or even Sega might be able to provide a copy of this tape so that "experts" can find out once and for all if there really is any clips of Saturn VF3 in the public domain.

I definitely believe that Digital Dance Mix was somehow linked to VF3, but unfortunately the actual conversion would have required a lot of downscaling because of the requirements to have two characters plus backgrounds all running at once. Therefore, it's reasonable to assume that the game would have indeed taken advantage of a lower resolution display at something averaging perhaps 30 frames per second. In addition to this, there's a good chance that VF3 might also have used the same lower quality models or even switching between higher and lower variations for the winning sequences and in-game fight sections respectively that has been suggested in the past.

I'll apologise once again for getting so carried away when writing about this title, but we've all got some "Holy Grail" and for me it just happens to be Saturn Virtua Fighter 3. Sadly, any facts are heavily outweighed by long-evolving myths and rumours that are long overdue for disproving...

P.S. When the UK official Sega Saturn Magazine first confirmed the existence of Saturn VF3, they listed the Japanese publication Saturn Fan as their source - is there anyone here who could provide a copy of this original article or at least find out what platform its screenshots (if there were any at all, that is!) came from? If there's any hope of finding any Saturn media, this might just be the last chance unless someone can sneak into AM2's vaults and come out with the actual game code!

The video that went arround UK game stores is just a myth. I was games manager of HMV Liverpool at that time and I can tell you that there was no such video.

I just had a stack of Saturn Fan mags... flipped through them, but never saw any mention of it. The only thing I ever saw mentioned about Saturn VF3 in any mag was in the 'most anticipated' list. It's not like I was flat out searching for it though.
