Talking of second chance offers, is it just me or does anyone else think that if you've had a bidding war against someone who then won't / can't pay up then the seller shouldn't just offer it at one bid increment below the final price? One time I bid on the relisted item and the same thing happened. I suggested cancelling all the other guys bids, expecting him to make a counter offer but he wouldn't budge even a bit.

I don't do it anymore, but I used to play ebay roulette. Only if it was something I really wanted, hoping that the high price would convince more people to sell. You can only do it if someone stupid is willing to bid against you for the over priced crap we all collect here, otherwise you would probably win it anyway. It's amazing how long the last couple of minutes of an auction feels if you're waiting for someone else to bid against you :)

I think that eBay's current setup is actually not protecting genuine users. If you try and trace the bidders you get less information unless they have won the auction. It means also (and this is what eBay clearly wants) that you have to use their second chance offer button rather than sifting through bidders and just offering them the item if you know the winner is a prat.

You also don't appear to be able to block out Zero rated bidders. It's -1 or less. That means there's a pile of zero rated guys sitting bidding against genuine users and you can't stop it. I always state "Zero rated bidders must contact us prior to bidding" and it sometimes works.

Today, I had someone bid on a laptop, contact with "if you don't accept paypal I can't pay for item", then place a bid. Despite my listing saying "I don't accept paypal". He got himself blocked and the bid cancelled out.

Just wastes their time, not mine as I am prepared to just use the eBay protection on future auctions. Must have a registered card etc.

eBay is just getting kind of too tight. I loved it when it had loopholes lol, especially the spelling ones. Plus the ability to block out zero raters. I think there should be an incramental scheme. You need to get 10 positive feedbacks from individual sellers before you can spend more than £100 and a further 10 before you can bid above £200. Unless you are prepared to register your card against it or something like that.

Steadster: No email from the PSP guy on eBay. I'll place you into SCO tomorrow.

That would be an excellent idea (so it probably will never happen)!

It's been a long while since I signed up with ebay (and my memory is showing it's age) - what sort of ID do they require now? I'm seeing an awful lot of zero-feedback/signed-up-this-morning users, who essentially either messing around, or out to commit fraud (like the guy who tried the spoofed second chance offer trick on me recently).

Considering the number of zero raters at it, the only ID required is a Beano membership card!

What was this spoof guys angle?

But... I dont have a Beano membership card!
I do have an oooold Young Persons Railcard - will that do? ;p

Ebay UK user, who searched for highish value item that had recently closed & then faked the second chance email to the second bidder (me) in line. The faking of the email was fairly well done, except for that fact that (a) nothing showed up in my ebay messages area, (b) his email was different from the seller (with whom I'd already had communications), (c) he'd used a mix of UK/US ebay links in his email & (d) I knew the real seller was based in JP & that he wasn't!

Alerted US/UK ebay & to their credit that account was NARU'ed fairly quick.

Have also participated in several auctions recently which were bid up to the high heavens by users that then vaporized (also the reason why I'm familiar with the official second chance procedures). I agree with smf - it's not fair that the second chance should be based on what the fraudsters managed to inflate your last auto bid to. However, that keeps ebay's percentage cut of the takings higher, so I don't see them being in much of a hurry to change that. That particular auction, the seller & I went through the official second chance procedure, to keep everything in line with ebay's rules, but the seller then credited me back the difference to the last proper bid. That act would have earned my highest feedback approval, but then ebay nuked the whole auction & second chance (presumably because of the dodgy bids), so feedback was impossible. Fortunately for me, they didn't do the nuking until 2 days after I'd recieved the items from the seller.

Phew, wot-a-lot of typing. I should really go to bed now, its gone 3am here....

A mate of mine sold a nokia N95 (Very, Very nice phone that he got as a free upgrade), which took 3 attempts before he found a genuine buyer. A scam going around at the moment is "I need this sent to my son/daughter/grandson/brother etc in nigeria where he/she is working. I will paypal you an extra £200 for the postage by fedex". Then an email comes in, looking like its from paypal showing the payment, but of course theres nothing in your paypal account as its a faked email.

    Parris: Sounds good.

For all those who enjoy getting back at those who seek to scam us genuine eBayers, I am sure you will have found this : http://thescambaiter.com/forum/

If not, enjoy. Especially, the Anus computers thread! Worthy of a film!

Anyway, I've had no word back from the other guy Steadster so the PSP sale is just a formality. I need under eBay rules to give the guy a fair opportunity to respond. Get your wallet ready. ;-)

I thought I got scammed once when I bought my System Disc 2 off ebay, arrived a week later than expected and it was a second chance off. The odds of someone having one system disc 2 was low in and of itself but having two?

Needless to say it's perched on my shelf waiting for a gd-r to come along.

Doesn't sound good from what I heard. I personally want the protos. He said there's a chance of including some that he can't list in the auction (me wants Superman and Baldur's Gate).

Well, my PSP zero rater finally popped up and nailed his colours to the mast! A scammer if ever I saw one "please email me as quickly as possible. I need to ship this item to my client (who the feck needs a rep for a PSP console?) in West Africa. We will pay via PayPal (although folk, this one looked dodgy as) or Travelx (Hmm, why not Western Union - the prefered method of scammers the world over?)" etc etc. You get the picture.

So, blocked, deleted, reported and negative feedback on the magnitude these people deserve.

Steadster, ironically enough we'd already exchanged details last night, so I can only imagine we are both perfectly happy to proceed lol

Are we really going to do this? I'd chip in more to get copies of the protos. I was told there are more included which he can't list.
