This is one of the reasons why it's best to snipe - the earlier you bid, the more you leave yourself open to counterbids (genuine, or otherwise). That old ebay tagline of 'bid early, bid often' existed only to increase ebay's profits - 'bid late, bid once' is far better.

I agree. However I once lost something while sniping because my browser was too slow. I heard some people actually use sniping services for items to bid in the last second :banghead:

Anyway, liquitt you should report him. Eventually ebay will check his past and compare ips and get him banned. It happend to a friend of mine who also used to outbid people with his own alternative account

Eh, not really. It's more like an old wisetale. Sounds good, but doesn't stand up to logic. :)

People who want it are still going to bid. Only now all the bids come in at the end, instead of spread out. And since eBay does the proxy thing, there is no need to do multiple bids to outbid others. It happens automatically.

If I'm willing to spend $50 on a given auction and you're willing to spend $40, I'm going to beat you every time, no matter if you bid early on or place your bit within the last second of the auction. ;)

Bid early, bid once is the way to do it. That way, you're guaranteed to never loose out on a deal. You either win it (sometimes very cheaply) or it goes to someone who is willing to lay down more cash than you.

Sorry - have to disagree. Bidding early only serves to increase the likelyhood of losing/paying more. I've played enough auctions to have seen more than enough hard evidence of this. What you're not taking into account is human nature - (a) typically, early (often casual) bidders tend to place incrementally higher bids, reducing your chance of landing a bargain should you fight them then & (b) many folks get competitive whilst bidding & will pay much more than they originally planned/bid. Late bidding reduces the impact of these factors, leaving the bids to more reasoned/planned ones. Your $50 might beat my $40, but we're less likely to see the thing hit $140 because someone gets a dose of auction fever.

Bottom line - if you've decided how much you're prepared to cough up for something, then you gain nothing by revealing your intentions with an early bid (unless you fail to bid later, of course! ).

Sniping is (arguably) good for buyers, since they can "hide" their bids until the last minutes and make the item for sale look undesired. Sniping is bad for sellers, since they have no idea if anyone is interested in an item and are more likely to pull the item or sell it privately if it looks like no one is interested.

Indeed. It can sometimes be worth putting a initial low bid, just to discourage the seller from killing the auction.

Only once!? ... in all the years I've been using eBay I could easily cry at some of the bargains I've missed because my damn page wouldn't refresh fast enough! It's sickening!

I'm not sure I'd trust those sniping programs personally ... don't you have to enter fairly sensitive information?

That N64 is fantastic .... love the artwork!

RE: the seller - personally I would take the time to report him to eBay .... what he is doing is known as 'shilling' and against eBay policy!

Bidding late also means you run the chance of completely forgetting about the auction and not having a chance to bid at all...heh.

Speak of the Devil.... 2 x NR Writers (USA) BIN prices!

A relatively new user asked in the market place for an NR Writer, so just on a whim (having never looked for one before) I decided to have a quick scan on eBay. Lo & behold.... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Panasonic-SW-9501-S-External-SCSI-DVD-Authoring-Drive_W0QQitemZ250166275622QQihZ015QQcategoryZ80622QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

BIN price is $750 (£365.50) and $75.00 P&P to the UK. Located in Florida, USA.

    <NtS>

    On your marks....get set.............GO!

About snipping: now that I sell lot of stuff, I'm always bored to see stuff at a really low price five minutes before the end.
If the price does not fit my expectations, I simply cancel the auction !

PS: yeah, I could put a reserve price. but reserve price is shit. 1, it's a ripoff from ebay. 2 it makes many potential buyers run away.
