Are you referring to the "Preorder the new Gamecube Zelda and get a bonus disc with Wind Wanker remade with the new engine" one? Yeah, that was stupid.
Anyone remember waayyy back in the day, the infamous Sheng Long joke? Everybody fell for that. I remember in jr. High school some Korean dude telling me he actually did it. Next month it was revealed to be a joke. The Jademan comics company (at the time the biggest publisher of comics in Hong Kong, founded by Tony Wong, who has been called the "Disney of the far east") was publishing the Street Fighter comic book at the time, and even not only printed the Sheng Long trick, also had Sheng Long on the cover of their next comic and worked the character into the story line. Talk about getting fooled. Info on the Jademan Street Fighter Comic: http://www.megspace.com/arts/rcllair/hkcoms/HK_SF2.htm
EGM has gone the way of Gamepro for quite some time now; it's not even worth reading it now, which is a shame - it used to be very decent quality and layout-wise. Now it's just another victim of 'let's-cater-to-the-lowest-common-denominator' marketing style and ideology that has destroyed too many a good mag or killed it off altogether (XBN, GMR). Yeah there's Play, but though it's not so elitist like EDGE (UK), it's just too lightweight and ..not there. EGM used to strike a decent balance. Sad.
Play seems to be currently the best one I can find here in the states; I'm almost thinking of subscribing. Gamepro is pretty weak, and the GMR/Game Informer were essentially the same thing, though one was crammed with EB ads and the other was full of Gamestop ads. They had some good articles from time to time, but a lot of it was the typical LCD of gaming - drooling over GTA:SA for several issues straight, etc. EGM used to be good - I remember them doing some excellent import previews of stuff like the PCE Dracula X, or FFVI coverage from the moment it was released in Japan, but they've sadly sunk to about the same depth as Gamepro.
What was this about, exactly? I read about it in a mag but I cant remember where! @Paulo, I was also born on April 2nd!
It was thier very first April Fool's joke, back in 1989 (or was it 1990?) I think it was about 1990, as I was in 8th grade when Street Fighter II came out. Or was it 7th grade? God dammed LSD. Anyway, the "trick" was as follows: -Pick Ryu -Get to M.Bison (Vega) with double perfects all the way through -Spar with Bison for 10 rounds without losing any energy (everyone should have known it was a joke right here, as this is impossible.) -On the Tenth round, "Sheng Long" appears and throws Bison into the background. Then there were some fake images of Sheng Long doing a flaming Dragon punch and such. Everybody fell for it. Also When Street Fighter III came out in 1997 EGM pulled the same trick again, but this time also included some Bengus-style artwork to go with it and photoshoped images of "Sheng Long" doing a double fireball and Electric Dragon Punch. I didn't fall for it the second time. Honest I didn't. P.S. The legacy of this Joke was the creation of Akuma. In SSFTT, Akuma leaps out and beats up Bison excatly the way Sheng Long did in Egm's joke. Not just a coincidence.
BTW here are the pics EGM created of Sheng Long in SF3. Supposedly they got the artwork from Capcom themselves. http://www.fightingstreet.com/folders/variousinfofolder/shenglong/shenglong.html
