I think Working Desgins is my favorite game company of all time. I used to like Square, back in the good ol' days.

Proof that EGM is know, officially, shit:

They did in the May 2005 (most recent) issue their top ten over-rated games of all time.

    10--Ico
    9--Shenmue
    8--Banjo Kazooie
    7--Final Fantasy IX
    6--NiGHTS
    5--Perfect Dark
    4--Donkey Kong 64
    3--Killer Instinct
    2--Donkey Kong Country
    1--Battle Arena Toshiden

Funny how PD, NiGHTS and Final Fantasy IX were all in their top 100 games of all time just 2.5 years ago. Blow me EGM. Blow me.

Aagh... several of those are among my favourite games ever. What possible justification did they give for NiGHTS being there, or DKC being no. 2?

same reason why people like G4 claim shenmue is a horrible game. They either havent played it or when people mention it they go "oh that was on the saturn/DC/other non popular console, then it must suck."

The funny thing about Shenmue is a lot of people claim to really hate it...so how can it be OVER-rated if a lot of people seem to think it's like a 3/10 game?

The thing that's a bit sad about the list is that many of the games they really, really liked and sung the praises about for awhile (Ico, Perfect Dark) and have now disowned because it's cool or something.

Justification for NiGHTS, btw, was this:

"Crowned by many to be Sega's answer to Nintendo's Mario, NiGHTS actually is more of a 2D racing game than 3D platformer. While it had beautiful art and excellent music, there's not that much to NiGHTS beyond flying really fast and collecting as many colored orbs as you can.

But is it actually good? The concept is unique enough to be worth checking out."

The last comment is ridiculous. It would be akin to saying about Halo 2/Unreal/Any FPS: This game is really only about shooting as many enemies as you can.

Well duh. That's what the game is about. And I've never played NiGHTS, btw.

    And about Final Fantasy IX;

"Nostalgia is a tricky thing. FFIX brought back many traditional series elements, but it also introduced a weak plot and lame characters."

You must be joking me. Back when it came out, everyone absolutely loved FFIX's characters, Vivi in particular. FFIX, no question in my mind, had the best characters out of all the recent "Playstation" era FFs (having never played the pre-PS ones, that's as far as I can stretch that statement). Vivi, Zidane, Steiner--hell, that game had character. Watching Zidane grab Dagger's ass and saying "Oops I missed the rail" was fucking class.

Sad how the mag would do a complete 180 from what it used to be. My subscription will not be renewed. :(

that's total BS. i don't whant to start a flame war or anything ((but i still do know i will...), i would rather put one of the three ps2 GTA here. Probably Vice City, because i never played San Andreas more than 2 minutes (got bored, maybe i was in a bad moment too) and FF7, wich is a pretty good rpg, but hell.... No way donkey kong country, Perfect Dark, ICO (ICO wasn't a commerical succes over here) and Shenmue are over rated. I must admit Nights might be a little bit (still love the game), as every PSX final fantasy too (absolutly loved the IX, but you know how FF fanboys are)

DKC sold on graphics, it didn't have such highly polished Gameplay as other platformers of the day... but it was influential for sure. Donkey Kong 64, on the other hand, was quite a mediocre game. Killer Instinct was great on the arcade, but the console conversions were absolute shite. I still played the hell out of the SNes version. FFIX was a great game, while not as great as most of the FF Series, it's much better than FFX. Shenmue is absolutely great - but the dubbing is quite grating on the ears. Perfect Dark rocks, much more than most N64 software anyway. Toshinden has not aged with dignity - but it was a great game for its time. I played Toshinden 3 like crazy back in high school. Ico... what the fuck are these losers doing, calling Ico over-rated? It's superior to most of the tripe released recently.
You know what game is over-rated? Castlevania: Lament of Innocence. There could have been lots more gameplay and innovation. It's castlevania, god dammit.

I'd like to see an "under-rated" list.
Great games that have been overlooked. Let's say, like Breath of Fire V, Gungriffon Blaze, and the like.

Sega's answer to Mario was Sonic, you dumb fucks. Anyone thinking that NiGHTS was supposed to answer to Mario (presumably it's Mario 64 they're thinking about, although it's not specified) was obviously not there at the time waiting for Sonic Xtreme. Idiots.

You think so? I'd disagree, I've been replaying it recently and I'd honestly say the gameplay is tough, but sharp. It's a very polished experience... if you were to say not as innovative, or not as varied, or as deep, I'd probably half agree.

Sorry mate, unless I get asked directly from mod/admin to tone it down, I'm going to carry on. And since assembler's avatar used to say "damn bitches" I'm guessing he doesn't care. I don't think I swear excessively anyway.

Besides, if you can say so many dirty words why would you care about me?

  14. I've heard worse. :/

I didn't much care for Fianl Fantasy 9 - the character designs completely threw me off - but I wouldn't go far as to say it's overrated. Final Fantasy has a significant fanbase, yet it still seems to operate below the cultural mainstrean, so I'd have a hard time calling any of the installments 'overrated'. Overrated seems to me something that would generate hype throughout the entire industry, have gamers slobbering over it, and then be one of the worst disappointments of the yeat. Fable, for example. Toshinden and Killer Instinct, I'd agree with - I never liked them upon their release, and I don't like them now. The rest of the column... It's just proof that the game reporting industry needs a major overhaul in its quality.

I'm not sure what the hell is wrong with that list - I distinctly remember reading in the official US Playstation magazine glowing reviews of Ico and statements saying it was the best underdog game of the season, and was underrated in every aspect. Perfect Dark was one of the crowning achievements on N64 hardware that carried the amazing gameplay from 007 and kicked it up a notch.

I think they don't understand the meaning of "over-rated". Most of those games are more under-rated if anything, and didn't sell too well even if they did get great reviews.
