Well, the main character in FFX is a pop-star like sports jock, and there's a britneyfied version of the almighty prelude right at the beginning. And don't get me started about FFX-2...
Getting that out of the way, the battle system in FFX is pretty much magnificent, and after the first hour of gameplay, it becomes quite better storywise as well.
I don't think we've seen a _great_ Final Fantasy since 1998, though. FFIX was sort of alright, FFX had its charm, and I understand the concept behind FFXI (though they should have simply gone with FF Online or something).

Alchy: Sonic is, indeed, the answer to Mario. What the fuck were these people thinking, not making a Saturn sonic available ASAP? Though we might have had to endure some crappy 1995 3D platformer, it also had the potential for greatness. Or if it had been 2D.... a 32 bit 2D Sonic... man, I'm wet all over.

As for Killer Instinct... I even had the cartridge, I think. Boy, did that game suck imperial amounts of ass. It was very... "modern", graphically, with the Donkey Kongish pseudo 3D sprites. It would have gotten the same deserved treatment "Rise of the Robots" got, had it not been by nintendo and rare. I sort of recall my friends playing this like 9 hours straight and they being very cheap at it, and me not getting to play Chrono Trigger because of that - so that might be another subconscious version I hate that goddamn crappy game.

gamespy looking back and dogging on games like DKC because it had pre rendered sprites and doesnt look great now is nitpicking. Go back and talk shit about how horrible metroid looks on the NES while you're at it. At least they have enter the matrix on the list, although it should be higher. MGS2 at least offered something to fans, while enter the matrix was a worse max payne.

It's an interesting story, actually. A lot to do with politics between SOJ (Sega of Japan) and SOA (guess ;)). Apparently Yuji Naka said he would leafve Sega if the Americans used the NiGHTS engine, among other things. Twat.

A quick google brings up this page: http://www.planetdreamcast.com/sonic/learn/vgames/sat_sonicxtreme/index.shtml

    Whooooa....

It would have been SO cool. Man... it really fucking sucked that it wasn't released...

What really gets me, about that generation (I know you don't like me calling it the "32 bit" generation!) - is the generalization of the lack of pack-in games. THAT sucked also.

Yeah, I agree. More Sonic-related trivia (on a roll today): SOJ didn't want Sonic 1 to be the pack-in game for the Genesis in the States. They thought that giving the best game on the system away with the hardware would hurt sales. Instead they wanted Altered Beast to be bundled, IIRC. Thank God they didn't have their way, huh...

These people don't know what over-rated means. Over-rated means highly rated, too highly rated. Calling games that got 5/10 over-rated is a bit stupid. And calling games that 75% of people have never even heard of (Ico...) isn't really doing it either.

If I had to pick one game that was incredibly over-rated it would be FF7. Jesus christ, why that got such an incredible following I'll never know. Now don't get me wrong, it's a good game, except it is the weakest out of any of the PS1 FFs.

Oh, and Super Mario 64. Give me a break. :\

well still talking crap about games like DKC now is dumb. By gamespy's standards, even goldenye 64 is overrated now because Halo and the countless other console fps look better now.

I was thinking that those guys thought it was overrated because hardcore gamers arent as casual as they are. You know? They seem to know the "Sleeper hits", and still call them overrated because they help take money from their sponsors. I am shocked and amazed they did'nt overrate Ikaruga or something. A good ol' hardcore game at gamespot usually gets a 7 or an 8, while most of the casual pieces of trash get OMG I LUBBZORS this gmae! 100 out of 10!
I think Halo 2 or MGS2 should get the all time overated game.
