anyone remember the magazine Video Games & Computer Entertainment?? Jason (kstyle) has a bunch of them from like 1989-91 and they're a pretty fun read
Game Informer is still around. Anyone eevr read MegaPlay? Sad shit excuse for a SEGA-centered mag, especially when compared to the UK's sega-centric mags. Though the UK has the absolute nastiest and worst game mag EVER in CVG, overall the quality of mags there has always been much better than in North America, some examples being Sega Saturn Magazine, Mega Play, ODM, EDGE, and Games TM.
I remember the Sonic and Tails for SSBM joke. Man, I tried so hard to get it, but every time I would come up short. It may not sound like much, but 20 KOs in the Cruel Melee was almost imposible.
Anyone remember CVG's nude cheat for Tomb Raider? I remember some people actually saying they did it. That was the last time I ever trusted a 10-year-old. And on the subject of CVG, it used to be a pretty good multi-format magazine - it was no Edge, but it was cheaper ^_^. Haven't bought it in over 4 years, though, and it seemed to be going downhill. Actually, isn't it dead now? Anyone used to read Arcade? It only lasted about 24 issues (around '99-'00) but it was damn good. Then Future replaced it with the hideous piece of crap that was Video Gamer. Ewww. The only mag I've bought since Arcade was Edge, but it's a complete rip-off (it's at least 7 Euro here! I can buy some crap DVD like Ferris Beuler's Day Off for that kind of money!) for what it is and they're so fucking snooty and serious. I haven't bought that in ages either - I can usually only afford the specials these days with my no job. But anyone with Channel 4 should know what the best games magazine really was - Digitiser!
I've still got a copy of Video Games magazine from 1984. Nothing like reading reviews for the latest arcade games like Spy Hunter and Mr. Do's Castle.
Aren't you referring to yourself in the third person? Hey, Ferris Bueller is awesome! So do any of you guys over in the UK read Retro Gamer? The local Barnes & Noble imports about 3 copies per month (of course, they are about 3 months behind), and while they are a bit spendy ($12, but that includes a CD with goodies like the full Beneath A Steel Sky on it), it's a really fun magazine. They submit themselves as being a general retro gaming, but seem to mainly focus on the ancient computers of yore - Commodores and Spectrums and whatever else was around then. I must say, it's a side of retro gaming that I know little about, and is very interesting. Of course, they do occasionally cover some more modern stuff, like an abbreviated history of Treasure in the last issue I bought.
Yeah, I know :-D , it's just always in HMV's Permanent Sale section (about a third of the ground floor is taken up by a sale ALL YEAR), probably along with with every other John Hughes film. I've looked at Retro Gamer a bit (but have never been able to afford it) - I'm surprised anyone's buying it as it looks like it's very much aimed at a niche market. Nostalgia's always a good thing.
Aren't you referring to yourself in the third person? (GSL) No just using Jasons account. He's still out of town getting his Grandmothers items divided amongst family but I use his account to read the boards all the time and even post on occaision. Sorry for the confusion. Kristy
Ah, I see now. :smt043 Well, welcome to the boards! Heh, Ferris Bueller is always in bargain bins here as well, yet it appears to be one of the bargain bin titles that is actually enjoyed and purchased. Odd, that. And yeah, Retro Gamer is a VERY niche publication, but B&N always seems to sell out of their shipment within a week or so here. Granted, we only get a handful of issues in stock each time, but it's obviously a selling niche.
EGM was the best magazine; nothing could touch it 3/4 years ago. The editors/writers were down to earth and didn't pull out any "omg casual gamer u gay and omg we graduated from the best uni ever" shit that some so called "elite" mags vibe. They were funny, informative, and their reviews were spot on. It's like you knew the writers of the mag personally. And then they got rid of the previews section. People left. They redesigned the mag. The sly humor turned into lame jokes a la Gamepro. The mag went down to around 100 pages or so, half of which were crap adverts. Sad. Gamepro is a lame piece of crap. It just sucks. Official Xbox Magazine is probably worse though. For now, I enjoy CGW, which is similar to the old EGM.
einbebop44: Gamesmaster was also good (published by future publishing in UK) some years ago and i still have many of the posters from the magazines (even the soulblade/souledge poster codeman1 has) and before my sister threw my old egm magazines and other magazines out then i can say yes EGM was a good magazine but i just lost interrest in gamesmaster some years ago , now i don´t prawl any magazines at all anymore.
You guys are forgetting the absolute BEST gaming mag from back in the day. Game Players. Hail Gazuga, he owns your sorry Mortal Shell Catcher @$$es.
Gamefan was the shit. They had a really cool import section, which back in the pre-internet days was the only way to find out about Japanese games. They even used to review anime. I've got a few issues from around 1996 if anyone's interested.
I like game informer, PSM (sometimes), Nintendo power (don't have a subscription anymore, but I had a lot, I need to get the issues I missed and resubscribe), and Play. I know there are more good ones im missing out on, but these are usually at the Books-a-million and not in plastic! I guess I like magazines that did stuff with games I really like...
I agree with you there Hawanja :smt045 Gamefan was the best US games mag ever. In it's day it was miles better than EGM. It's just a shame that it died and EGM continued. Yakumo
hmmm funny we talk about different game magazines but i was interrested in nintendo before i could any word of english and then in fifth grade when i had my first english classes (12 very long years ago) i began to buy the english official nintendo magazine so that magzine made me begin my english speaking journey and it had not stopped yet although i need to get my "oxford" english dialect back in my mouth instead of my danish accent p.s. don´t call me an overclass onion like the teacher who made my english sound like it does today :smt067 jens Egon you stupid twat your english sounds like the giiberish i try to sound like english (English is not gibberish) and yes fifth grade was my last year in "normal" school and that is it for now.
i know what the fuck is going on with magazine prices! edge is like £5/6 here along with any mag... hell for that price i can get a boook!
If you know of any mags like that here in the states, please let me know!! It seems like everything out there right now (with the slight exception of Play) caters to the lowest common intellectual denominator. I'd rather have to read though some slightly pretentious writing (not that you usually get the class of elitism that can be found on the internet) in a magazine than have to endure reviews of how Madden XXVII Reux: This Year's Edition is the greatest sports game ever or how Grand Theft Auto: Go To Harlem And Smack Yo' Bitch Up Muthafuckaa is once again singlehandedly redefining the (yawn) gangsta rappah simulation genre. The state of the industry, especially its reporting, just makes me want to cry.
:smt043 :smt043 :smt043 (and yes i understand and really agree with you that is makes you cry because "three" versions of GTA 3D is a bit too much )
