Sony are really doing a good job of killing their machine before it is even released.

    That said......

    1. Backwards compatability sucks - dedicated hardware is much better.

    2. You'll still get loads of idiotic Sony fanboys (and girls) buying the damn thing.

Oh well, let them waste their money on crap.

subbie should be payed for his love for Sony , he's doing a great advocacy job:lol:

There are benefits of course in emulation, but with it come disantvantages, and people usually weigh one against the other to see which one has the upper hand.

AS it stands now, Europe is getting fucked. There's no advantage CURRENTLY for the one million people who went the extra mile and pre-ordered the console. That's a fact.

To say that emulation will be complete is a lie. There's no such thing as perfect emulation or complete emulation, else it would be a simulation of the hardware. Emulation in graph terms, substitutes detailed curves or paravols with a straight line :p It ommits much of the hardware's true dealiings and effectively replaces only the parts that are actively used in a certain capacity.

For this reason, software emulation of the Ps2, in my view, will never be as complete as the units that include the Ps2 hardware completely and natively support the games.

Also, if you read Sony's statement, they re not willing to invest time and money in order to provide full emulation of all available titles and would rather target their funds towards the PS3 side of things.

To summerize, although subbie mentions some positive points, its mostly cons in my view when objectively comparing bullet-points .

    And lets not forget:

Who the fuck wants to upscale games anyway? Aren't you the ones who always complain about the lack "of the original feeling"? So let's not be hypocritical here. I d rather have a full functioning library, than a limited bells n whistles selection. Games designed for a specific platform are designed to be played the way they re meant to be played, in their original form. Upscaling stuff leaves much to be desired - it's not next gen, but it's not in its original form either - does it really look better then?the answer is no. Leave it alone. It was fine the way it was and everyone got used to it.

If they want people to throw their Ps2 and get a Ps3, they better damn keep their policy uniform, because screwing europe over like this means that their financial projections have been falsely calculated and its about time they get some real statistical analists and PR.

    1) late
    2) expensive, £=$
    3) lame pre-order psp bundle :love2:
    4) lesser product

Where does $ony's genuine hate towards Europe come from?

Is this a revenge for the UK "No, ps3 is not a computer" import tax ruling?

If Sony are going to treat European customers with such scant regard and such contempt, they will potentially lose the edge they've enjoyed (what am I saying? They HAVE!) I know one thing's for sure - release an inferior, more expensive machine in the European region and you'll see imports hit the roof. Is Sony actually trying to egg people into illegal activity? IF this happens, I would be buying my PS3 abroad - simple as that. Get more for less - it's not a difficult thing to understand - as those old PS2 units (with the dodgy Sony lasers) are not going to last forever).

I am actually shocked by the number of PS3 owners I know are just bored with the damned console. The main complaint (apart from cost) seems to be the lack of direction from Sony, poor launch titles and nothing really looking of great interest in the near future.

Another shock to me is the lack of any hype here in the UK regarding the release in Europe. ASDA has just sold off a pile of brand new PS2 consoles for £50.00 (so don't get ripped off on eBay folks - a lot of them are appearing on there) and THAT generated more excitement than the PS3 has thus far.

It's incredible - what are Sony doing?

I read this 2 days ago but it seemed like they were phasing-out the hardware emulation for software emulation, not removing the PS2 hardware. I mean thats supposed to happen 2 years after launch with a new slimmer model, its common sense you know.

I wonder if then the PS2 units will be somewhat smaller than launch ones, althought the PS2 SOC didnt take that much space...

Anyway, this is kinda bad for me since I was going to buy a PS3 to play PS2 games, since I skipped the later and feel kinda stupid to buy one now thats even more obsolete than when it was released:110:

Plus the crappy ass laser and the lack of HDD support (since they KILLED the fat one) gives a new PS2 an actual life span of 2 or 3 years (which is actually quite an archievement from my launch unit which broke after 5 friggin minutes!).

BTW, 600 bucks would buy a lot of those 50 pounds PS2s:dance:

Yeah, both the Xbox (Argos) and PS2 (ASDA) have recently dropped below the £50 mark. Argos continue to sell it at that price, whilst ASDA apparently ran out of PS2 consoles for £50 and have no intention of getting them back in again, but are running the promotion until the 28th. Once the 28th appears they will be selling the PS2 for the original price again....

I might be wrong here, but I think ASDA were doing it on a select number of consoles to drag people to their current games software sale. They have a weird pricing policy and tend to be more expensive than elsewhere. Call me an old cynic. So don't go looking for a PS2 in ASDA until the 28th at the earliest as you'll not be sold one. Imagine ASDA running out of PS2 units - one of the largest retail sales divisions in the UK. Incredible. How did they manage it in 24hrs?

Someone should look at this weeks PS2 sales across the UK and see what % of sales jump occured in the preceeding 2 weeks. That should give you an indication of how generous ASDA have been.

This is OT, but there we have it.

Again, I just rolled my eyes when the Argos Xbox units (easy to spot as most sellers plugged them with exactly the same 4 free titles given by Argos) appeared on eBay for a few quid more. The same is happening with the PS2 units. "BIN: Brand New in box, unopened - unwanted gift..." yeah right you tosser, you bought it cheap with your ASDA microwave meals for one on Friday and are ripping people off...

    Makes my angry!

Mate, forget it - see my post above. It was a VERY limited offer that I think took place on 21st at 6am across the UK. I called EVERY local ASDA store and within minutes all of the units were gone.

However, the way things have been going recently it would not surprise me if this offer was not repeated elsewhere soon. ASDA specifically mentioned 3 major gaming outlets in their adverts and it may lead to a mini pricing battle between these outlets, or they may just choose to view ASDA with the same cynicism that I have.

I really can't imagine that Wal-Mart UK got through all their stocks of PS2 in such a short period of time and took a massive loss across the board. Not a chance. This will be akin to "Hold ALL but 10 PS2 units per store until 28th". The advertising isn't misleading, but I do wish ASDA had stated "24hr offer" on their adverts as they carried the advert AFTER I confirmed no more consoles were in stock.

The poor entertaintment section staff will be repeating the "Sorry, they are now all sold out. No we do not intend to obtain more stock at that price. It was an over order purchase (yeah!!!) and we sold them to clear...."

That PS3forums link is interesting, if only to see how quickly people will try and justify what is undeniably an anti-consumer cost-cutting move. Sony are saying a "handful" of PS2 titles will be playable - if they were going to provide more than this, don't you think they'd be making a big song and dance over it? And if the consumer happiness was the aim, wouldn't they include both hardware and emulation?

It's another slap to the face for European gamers, and I hope the backlash is significant.

Just remember, it's not like this model is only for Europeans, every bastard is going to get them from now on, so if you havn't got a PS3 already where it's been out for a while, chances are you are going to get one of these models. It's not like they are going to manufacture 2 different models just to shit on Europe more than they already do.

    1) If emulation of the PS2 was not of prime important to Sony, then why offer it at all - to anyone?

    2) I take the point made earlier about running software on the original hardware, we are none of us strict about that because I've lost count of the number of people hacking one machine (or their PC) to run software not designed to run on it. So, I feel that is a bit of a mute point.

    3) Perhaps Sony based their opinion on cutting costs, but if that was their idea then why is the European version more expensive - seems like a werid cost cutting exercise to me?

    4) If this was a tax issue then why kick your customer?

    5) I wouldn't care were it not for the fact that it is being offered elsewhere. Japan always seems to get preferential treatment which sucks! Now the US is too, so why not just do this across the board?

I see similar complaints arising for the new version of the 360, considering established customers wont get the same value.

Expect the USA and Japan to follow suit and change over to the newer revision hardware any time now (probably just after Euro launch).

The first PS3 iteration also includes the eDRAM from the PS2, which is probably being kept in the new revision due to bandwidth issues which can't be emulated with the PS3 hardware.

My opinion: No one is going to buy a Ps3 because it plays PS2 games. That might be a sweetner for the high price, but not if it doesn't improve anything. Software emulation at least allows graphical improvements to be made (beyond the upscaling that most HD TVs will do themselves).

Taucias, I agree that nobody is really buying the PS3 so that they can play PS2 games, however it would be very nice if it did. For one thing, it would be good to retire aging PS2 units and get some old, but cool titles up on better, newer equipment.

I personally disliked that most Xbox titles didn't initially work on the 360 and I am very grateful to Microsoft that they have not taken the approach that Sony have displayed to their customers. Microsoft has done a fairly good job of ensuring that regular updates for older material is made available.

A point of note: Again I have to disagree with a previous poster who mentioned that upscaling isn't attractive as it tampers with the original feel of the title. I've played a few Xbox games now and frankly I am playing the title and not seeing the difference in rendering etc, however I did appreciate the smoother finish to most games I used. It's not a distraction in my opinion.

Sony on the other hand appear to have decided their product is too expensive (about bloody time), but the bulk of that expense is wrapped in the Blu-ray technology they have introduced. Like the PS2 and the original PS1 the hardware was frequently revised and costs dropped. As people buy, the costs are eventually reduced. That is just common sense.

In reality I wonder whether in fact "cutting" the PS2 section of the PS3 is going to cut enough off the price? The price would drop as the unit began to sell, but the PS3 simply isn't attracting the sales figures that Sony had hoped for. This is a failure on Sony's part. Does anyone else here actually think that Sony just cannot get the PS2 section to work as smoothly, reliably and effectively as customers want? It sounds plausable. Remember, they screwed up the PS2's running of PS1 titles first time around.

Let's just face it, they've bolloxed this damned console from conception to release.
