Nice to see the Game Development and Hardware forums are back Hope you find some reliable mods/admin to share the workload.
Kev, let us know if you need anything from us regular folk as well. I was part of a car forum where the owner got overwhelmed managing the site and sold it off to a company. They turned the site into an Ad and Spam profiting machine. The site was covered with so much ad crap it took forever to load. People also got frustrated with the new mods in charge and many of the regulars left (taking a lot of car knowledge with them). Now, maybe I'm thinking too doomsday but if you ever are thinking about "xyz" upgrade to protect the site, let us know, I'm sure we can raise some funds to help out.
It's great the website is fine and back in action regardless of whatever has been lost the past few days. It's such a shame that people would really go into so much trouble to abuse website exploits. As a community, we can heal this wound easily! Best we can do is dismiss it and move on...
Best of luck patching things up and getting things running smooth again. Makes little sense to me what happened, kind of like when spammers are paid to infect peoples computer with spyware which spews out so many adverts it renders the users computer unusable and they have to wipe it to restore it to working order. Nothing like a format and reinstall to make me want some Viagra, a new toaster and some life insurance!
I haven't ever looked at the VB codebase but would assume they're using SHA1 or (more likely) MD5, what about changing it to mhash/SHA512 with salt?
For me it defaulted to "Blue" style and yep its misaligned but a simple switch to VB4 Default fixed it
That probably would break upgrades. If you really care however, bcrypt or PBKDF2 with HMAC-SHA512 and a good amount of rounds would probably be one of the safer options.
