Yes I'm back from self imposed exile, My Win 7 ultimate getting pulled becuase the key somebody gave me WAS FROM AN MSDN ACCOUNT...so 2 months and $365 later I have returned, less determined to annoy all of you. Anywho Symphony of the night seems to be the big debate where I asked this same question elsewhere. That and Resident Evil. I'm really not sure. I like the extras those two have. Street Fighter Zero 3 is probably Best on the Saturn, The Roster of the Dreamcast Version but the world tour mode of the Playstation version (which I always felt was better) Pretty much ANY Capcom fighter is better on Saturn. I'm sure I'm missing a crap load of games here
Any SNK fighter as well...in fact, just about any 2D game, except the ones like Symphony of the Night that were ported halfassedly.
Track down Exhumed (PAL)/Powerslave (NTSC), it's a fantastic fps with great graphics (including amazing (for it's time) lighting effects). Plus if you get the NTSC copy you can get access to Deathtank one of the greatest multiplayer titles (that few have heard of!). In fact track down anything by Lobotomy, they did some awesome conversions (Duke Nukem 3D and Quake).
I'd add Dead or Alive to the games already mentioned. Definately a much better and faithful arcade port on the Saturn.
Quake on the Saturn is an impressive technical achievement, but little more. If you've been obsessive about the original PC game then you might enjoy spotting all the differences in level geometry, but that's a pretty niche thing... it's not very playable, anyway, and the N64 port is much better. Generally the Saturn didn't do FPS games very well. (And the less said about Doom the better.)
Duke Nukem 3D Exhumed/PowerSlave/1999 Dead Or Alive Grandia Thunder Force V Tomb Raider X-Men Vs Street Fighter Street Fighter Zero 1,2,3 Metal Slug Etc....
I was disapointed to see that alot of the Capcom games were lacking extras like Vampire Hunter, X-men VS Street Fighter and Marvel Super Heroes. Vampire Savior is fantastic. As for the SNK Games..LOAD TIMES Probably better than the Neo Geo CD though. Metal Slug is FANTASTIC I LOVE the Combat School mode. Is the model 2 more powerful than the Saturn? Daytona, VF2, and Fighting Vipers are far from Arcade perfect as are a ton of the racers. Last Bronx loos fine though not better but not worse same with DOA.
I disagree with SotN and Resident Evil. SotN is best on the PS due to MUCH better graphical effects and music. Resident Evil also looks a lot better on the PS and the director's cut basically has everything the Saturn has. Better games on Saturn: Exhumed Tomb Raider (debatable) SFZ2 SF Collection UMK3 (better than MK3, but different version) Duke Nukem Xmen Vs SF Basically all Capcom 2D fighters Metal Slug On Model 2 vs Saturn - Model 2 is MUCH more powerful.
Didn't the developers of Quake almost give up since programing the Saturn was like solving a spherical rubicks cube?
Ok, this is where I'm an expert ALL Capcom and SNK fighters are better on the Saturn and that's a fact. For 3D the following are superior on the Saturn - Dead or Alive (so much better that it appeared on the XBOX dead or alive collection), Exhumed / Power Slave, Quake and a few odd Japanese games. For shooters, Darius Gaiden is laughably bad on the PlayStation, all Paroidius games are better on the Saturn. In fact I'm not sure if the PlayStation got them all. Donpachi is better on the Saturn if you are looking for the arcade version. The playStation has a few "improvements". In The Hunt better on Saturn, Night Striker also better and a few more that I don't remember off the top of my head. Yakumo
Really? What exactly makes them superior? I have the DX pack for both consoles and couldn't notice any differences, also haven't heard anything bad about the other Parodius's (or any DX pack). And sure the PlayStation got them all, there was also a PS-exclusive strategy-spinoff Paro Wars. :033: Not necessarily true. I'm not sure if the loading times are equally long on the PS, but it's definitely only the Saturn that suffers from extreme slowdown. The yoko screen is mysteriously wobbled in both ports though, it has to be played in tate either way. @topic Naturally all the ST-V ports turned out pretty good because it was the related arcade hardware. Therefore good old Soukyuugurentai is much better. The PS port had an exclusive extra ship, but isn't as smooth as the Saturn version. Other games that are known to be better than on the Saturn are: In the Hunt (although there's a damaged print) Exhumed Quake SNK / Capcom arcade ports that support a RAM cart Thunder Force V (it belongs to a SEGA system anyway! ) Darius Gaiden (pile of crap on the PSX) Konami Antiques MSX Collection (it was divided into three volumes on the PS that now each cost as much as the whole collection for the Saturn, technically no differences to my knowledge) Games that you'd rather buy for the PSX: DoDonPachi (SAT suffers from poorly resoluted explosions) Akumajo Dracula X: Gekka no Yasoukyoku (no true transparency effects here!)
Sorry Yakumo, I have to intervene here. You could fairly say, that almost any non-exclusive shoo't em ups outside the ST-V world & probably TFV, are better on the PSx. Donpachi has a very frowsy screen adaption (scaling) and also more slows and more rough sound than the PSx counterpart. Dodonpachi has fugly explosions which makes the game very unattractive to play. And the list goes on. In the hunt better on saturn? Did you even compare 'em both? The SS one is almost unplayable due to the massive slow orgy, while the PSx gives you an faithful Arcade adaption. And sure there were all four Parodius(es) as well, and they are perfect translated on the PSx. What the SS is for beat'em ups is the PSx for shoot'em ups. Both have a lot of 'em, but some are more worthy on the one system, while the others are better for the other system. Either way, you need both of 'em to get the max. 2D enjoyment, since there are so many 2D exclusives on both sides ;-)
There is no port of Quake to the PSX, so Yakumo and Ave, you're both wrong PSX only got Quake 2 and Saturn only got Quake 1.
You're right for the biggest part, but I have to add another (ST-V) title here ^_^ Geki-Oh Shienryu No freaking tate mode on the PSX! How could they?
Right, and as I mentioned above, the ST-V titles are undisputable better on the SS, since it is practically the very same hardware. Here two non-exclusive shewties: Geki-oh Shienryu Soukyuugurentai How about non-shooties like PuyoPuyo Sun?
As a Tomb Raider enthusiast I have to say that graphically both versions are almost identical. There's talk about some little difference in resolution, but that's not very noticeable. There's talk about disc access speed, framerate, and polygon break (this one being Playstation exclusive)... But if one don't like, go play in the PC with the resolution doubled and be happy. The Saturn thing lies on the controller. I'm one that don't like the PS controller, but the developers did 3 key settings so stupid for Saturn Tomb Raider that looks like that they NEVER PLAYED the damn game. You have to Walk, Look, and Shoot at the same time (at least to play at an acceptable level of perfection), and that is not so easy to do with the idiotic Saturn key definitions (not impossible, but there is that "could be better" thing). So let's blame Core or Eidos for being dumb.
The only thing better on the PS1 version of SOTN was the fact it could do proper Transparency and didn't have some of the slowdown. That's about it.
What I like best about Saturn SOTN is that you don't have to unlock Richter and Maria is playable. I have 4 versions of SOTN XBOX360/PSP/Saturn/PS1 JP translated The 360 is the best looking, PSP I have yet to actually Play. Saturn seems to be clearer and PS1 has blurry ass resolution. I'm giving my edge to the Saturn as it has extras the other 3 don't
