Yes, it’s crucial for game dev and compiling. It’s something everyone must/should have.

Perhaps. But it’s basically impossible to make programs for the PlayStation 2 without an SDK. It would be great to have that disc though

Does this actually work? I was trying to compile a list of what all those single-letter accounts do, but z seems to run FINDIAG. FINDIAG seems to be paired with SETDIAG, whereby SETDIAG is used to start the aging process while FINDIAG is used to end it.
The scripts are very similar, except that FINDIAG's diag.sh script calls unsetup.pl at the very end - which deletes all diagnostic accounts. So how does this reset the root account password?

EDIT: I think HI_Ricky also mentioned the same thing about the z account:

So does z actually reset the root password as part of the hardware tests, or does it actually start a shell that you can use to reset the root password (in other words, a loophole)?

The z reset does work but I believe it completely resets the contents of the drives. So it has the default settings, keys and login environment and variables as if it has just arrived from Sony. It reset the password and my IP configuration.

I did reset the ps2 with the password something other than z and straight away I had strange results, things didn't work and overall strange behaviour. It may have been co-incidence.
