I refuse to buy the Xbox 360 until it gets to the last revision I have the 39001 model of the PS2. I got it the summer of last year, and I knew it had problems. The laser rails would need to be regreased every 5 hours of playtime. Eventually in November I sent it into Sony hoping it would solve the problems. Nope, failed again from the same problem in January, thank god it was still under warranty. And again in April! 3 times! Since then it seems to be working fine, but just in case I bought myself a 90001 that has been sitting in my closet waiting for the eventual break down of the 39001 again. I've had my DS and Wii break down. DS the microphone broke which doesn't affect the system that much but got annoying on the game that require it. The Wii would end up on a black screen saying an error occurred and the system would need to be restarted every time I tried to start a game. I do take great care of all my systems by the way.
The only console that ever truly died on me was my 360. I never understood how people had issues with the ps2 as I got one a year after they came out and it was a trooper. That thing fell from a height of 5 feet or more about 6 times I don't know why but it has and it still worked. It only went bad when I opened it and screwed up that damn power cable which then led me to short out the board when I was jumping the pins with a knife to start it. I have gone through about 4 360's and I just call Microsoft each time and they always fix it as I usually pretend I don't know what a warranty was.
Ive had my ps2 since launch never ever had it fail, when Kingdom hearts 1 came out i left it on for a month strait, ive left it on when i was on vacations, it has so many hours of playtime on it its ridiculous, Most durable console ive ever owned.
My list of JPN machines that are all original 1st gen releases and their problems. Master System = None Mega Drive = None Mega Drive PAL = Faulty modulator that would cause the colour to flick from black & white in some games. Changed for another which was fine for years until I sold it to get a JPN system. Wondermega = None Mega CD = Laser Died Mega CD Mark 2 = None Super Famicom = Blew a fuse due to a Wildcard but easily repaired. Apart from that Not a single problem. PC Engine Duo = Dead Laser PC Engine Duo R = Dead Laser PC Engine Core (grey one) = None Sega Saturn = None Sega Saturn found in a puddle in the rain 10 years ago = Drive motor gave out in summer 3 years ago but for some strange reason started working again and still going strong to this day. Hitachi Hi-Saturn = None Dreamcast = Resetting problems after 4 months of use. Sent to Sega Japan and came back fixed and still going strong 10 years later. I still have the service letter for that too. PlayStation = God knows how many I've owned but pretty much all of them had fucked up CD drives. Nintendo Wii = Works great however the DVD drive vibrates like hell making an awful noise. A common problem I believe but easy enough to fix. Nintendo 64 = like a brick. Never a problem. I've also owned a Neo Geo which was fine and a PC Engine GT which was also fine. My PC Engine Turbo Grafix (that big thing) would crash a lot but that's probably because it was a junk system. So, I've had a few problems with hardware but overall quality has been rock solid after a quick repair or replacement apart from the original PlayStation but I guess we all know about them. For me the worst built machines have been NEC CD based hardware (PC Engine) and Sony PlayStation. Sega has been relatively good while Nintendo machines have caused the least amount of troubles. Just a shame that there shitty western NES is so badly built. Yakumo
Ironically I have a PC Engine CD-ROM2 drive, which has been working for at least 8 hours a day, for at least 90 straight days twice in a year for the last eight years and not once has it let me down... Noticed you've not owned a Xbox or Xbox 360, the failures on that make the Playstation 1 (first model) look super reliable...
You're very lucky in the NEC front or I'm very unlucky. I've found them to be just as dodgy as the original PlayStation or maybe not as bad since they are a lot older. I never knew the original XBOX had problems. I'm well aware of the 360 though. Saying that I'm really thinking about buying a Jasper based system. Just need to get the cash together. Yakumo
The 20GB, 60GB and 40GB PS3 models are now starting to have problems. The biggest problem is the CPU overheating (cheap thernal paste) or bad quality soldering of the cpu (same problem that plagued the 360). This problem is already called YLOD (Yellow Lights of Death), since it blinks 2 yellow lights then goes to red.I have read lots of reports lately. Also, have heard of problems on the blu-ray drives on those models.
There are problems of course, but still not nearly as bad as the 360. Even Wiis have been having some issues so.
Wii's biggest problem are the bloody vibrations on the DVD drive. It really does make such an awful noise. It can be fixed though without any electronic background. Other things going wrong on the Wii are people bricking them with region changes but that's their own stupid fault. Yakumo
I've only ever had problems with the 360. That's not really saying anything because I haven't owned any of my stuff for more than 10 years. The 360 is so worth going without it for a week every once in a blue moon. At least it's worth it for us here in the US. I don't know how Microsoft does stuff overseas.
if you don't have Gold the 360 can feel quite restrictive compared to the PSN. 1. You can't download most demos early if you haven't got Gold (but at least there's more demos than on the PSN) 2. You can forget about casual online gaming like on the PS3 - I really rarely play any game online, but it's good that it's there, just like Mariokart Wii and Brawl.
Had a PS2 break- built like crap they were,, started making loud noise and refusing to boot anything, 3 months old. We have a PS2 slim now, and that takes some abuse thanks to basically being a Singstar and Buzz machine. I've had GBA, GBC, Wii, N64, Saturn, Dreamcast, Master System, N64, Mega Drive, Gamecube, Xbox.. no problems, aprt from my current Saturn.. if you turn it off after playing a game, then turn it on again, there will be white rolling lines on the screen and it will refuse to boot a game- never caused me a problem as I open the drive and swap discs while it is on (as you are supposed to)
