Your clothes reflect how you take care of yourself and what you think of yourself. There's plenty of cheap stuff that looks good. If you spend some time you can still pull it off w/o the labels, but you need to have some fashion sense. Most girls won't give you the time of day if you look like a douchebag. At least in the cities, anyway.

I don't get it. I look different than all my mates yet none of us are fashion whores. We dress well. I just don't think you need to spend stupid amounts of money on a shirt just to look like a flashy git. (I'm not saying you're a git by the way)

Well, if that's how small minded people are then fine. I wouldn't want a woman or friends who thought like that. Glad I don't live in Tokyo any more.

Right now I'm wearing a 5000 yen Billiabong T-Shirt (pretty cool one to boot) and ripcurl shorts. I've been out all day in these and not looked out of place where ever I went including fashionable parts of Hakata. I think in Tokyo and Osaka the people have gone fashion stupid. Men trying to look like pretty boys with make-up and cosmetics, waxing their arm and leg hair off and spending more time pissing about with their hair every time they pass a mirror more than a woman would. A few years ago these guys would have been classed as gay but now........ It's ridiculous to be honest.

@Yakumo: That's why I"m finding the cheapest ones... 1 million yen for clothes is a waste of money XD. I'll be looking for cheap but cool/cute/simple & unique/etc...

Well I am hardly a pretty boy! But I would dress this way even if I was not a model.

For the record I had one Tokyo girl wince when she saw my (not-very) hairy legs. Broke my confidence mid flow as I have always liked my legs. Now both my arms and legs are kept sculpted within reasonable limits! Do not blame the men, the girls shifted the goalposts. Girls now expect guys to make the effort. Guys did not wake up one day with the desire to spend 40 mins on their hair. Girls expectations were raised by the guys on Japanese TV and their fashion mags.

For me it is about respect. If your girl does not bother with herself, neither do I. But I try to do as much for my body as a girl does for her own. If you expect a girl to wear make-up, heels that kill her feet and uncomfortable underwear then you gotta make an effort somewhere. No?

It is like a gaijin friend of mine gave me some GBH of the ear when he I was buying expensive underwear for guys in 109-2. I just said that I was just raising my game cos it is embarrissing if a girl looks amazing and you are just in baggy passion-killer boxers.

Girls expect more! And they deserve it!

And yeah some guys do think it is gay, but those guys are not pulling the a-grade girls in Japan.

As for cheap gear. There is cheap stuff for girls and goth-guys in Takeshita Street Harajuku as well as Zen-Mall on the main road for the guys. Also Magic-Cinq in Shinjuku, east exit. Bunch of Gal-O places in Kabukicho on host-road. Shibuya 109-2 is OK but mid-price. Zen Mall is Shibuya is well boring though. Probably best going to Takeshita if you are on a serious budget and can't speak Japanese. There are loads of stores that cater for tourists as well. I would up the budget and hit Laforet and 109, if you are going to get serious.

Oh BTW bhl88 are you a guy or a girl? That will change my advice.

I beg to differ on that one. My first girlfriend in Japan was a jewellery model. She loved me in a suit no matter what the brand was or casual gear. Her father, one time high school kendo champion of Japan soon put a damper on our marriage ideas though. I can still remember her face with ease. All my other girl friends were decent to very good looking as well and my wife is certainly no minger. I guess women's expectation of men in Tokyo is different than the rest of Japan. Mind you, you only have to watch the shite on TV to know that.

I agree that women deserve a man who looks after himself but to take that to the limit of where a man has to change his body by shaving of body hair and putting on cosmetics etc is going too far in my opinion. All but one of my previous Japanese girlfriends didn't like the arm hair but once they found out how comfortable it was :love2: they soon changed their mind.

Hey Yakumo I did not intend to diss you or your girlfriends of wife! I was just saying girls in their teens and twenties NOW are different.

Also Gaijin do seem to be outside the law of fashion sometimes! I feel sorry for Japanese guys. They gotta be dazzling or rich or they are not going to be dating what they want to date!

Still I do wish I had a girlfriend who could accept my gaming. Is that possible? I only tend to game when my GF is not around. And she hates to see me play games when she is around. So can we have a future with both games and girls? Maybe there is another thread in that!

Unless you're working w/ someone or in school with them, you're limited on how you meet people. If you're meeting someone out on the town, which most people do these days, then not only do you have to get noticed, but you have very little time to build raport. Picking and choosing based on appearance is not being shallow, it's being human. If you can only talk to a few girls in a bar in a night are you going to go to the unkept one assuming she has the best personality? Physical attraction is necessary for the longevity of a relationship.

I don't think one has to go to the extents that Warakia does... but maybe it wouldn't hurt. I've gotten close to pulling quality meat wearing jeans and a T-shirt... although they are generally quite a tight, and probably designer ones. Then I remember I'm married w/ a kid, so go home, jerk, and sleep.

Don't worry mate, I know you didn't. I'm just becoming a grumpy old fart these days

Hmm, yes, but only if she's an games nut too. I know a woman who loves gaming and is also quite pretty but she's married to a real gaming nut who makes my collection look like a teenagers bedroom. I too only game when the missus is out or asleep. I don't game in front of my baby son either.

Right for that kind of fashion go to -

Takeshita Street Harajuku - Cheap, second hand and loads of different types of Loli are to be found here. Defo cheapest place, but poor quality and targeted at tourists. Still if you are a big guy this is the only place to get your sizes.

La Foret Harajuku - this is top shelf stuff. ( on B2) expensive but this is the same stuff you see models wearing so worth it in the long term. Also there are a couple of cheap places, you will get more help and better service as well as custom orders. Also they always have stuff on sale.

Finally Marui young - mid range, but very cool stuff. Worth a look. But I think this place is 99 percent aimed at girls.

    Good luck

Hmmm, for cheap custom orders you probably want to go to the smaller places in Nakano and Akihabara.

Custom orders are always going to be expensive.

If you are very tall, you will not have too much of a problem. But if you are fat or muscular you are going to have issues buying stuff off the rack. Perhaps you should buy stuff and get it altered rather than paying for custom stuff.

No offense, but copying fashion trends that are fairly popular in Japan isn't exactly unique to begin with.

bhl88 -you sound like almost the perfect build for this kind of fashion. Not too tall and no need to wear those crazy built up shoes.

Next to pull off Harajuku style get to work on your hair...
