Couldnt have put it better myself hl713, the forum needs removed or some ban happy mods. The 360 scene is just plain crazy, mistrust, circles, everything you stated above. Its just rediculous, its a games console for crying out loud, and here at assembler i like the fact that the general tone is one of a more mature standard, a standard which is clearly disregarded in the 360 section.
At this point I think it all rests in Kev's hands. Banning troublesome users is not something that Pikkon or I would have a problem with, however that is not a power that is available to forum level mods. In short, even if we wanted to ban individual users from that forum we couldn't. That's something that is reserved for the board mods. All we can do is manage posts and threads. I would love to see the forum remain as I believe it can be a good source of information. I recognize many of the names there and know that there is a lot of untapped knowledge waiting to be shared. The goal (in my eyes) would be to keep ASSEMbler as a completely neutral forum, but one with strict rules. You misbehave and you get banned from the forum (or get your posting privs revoked). Egos need to be checked at the door. Perhaps this is something as simple as designating one of the site mods (Paulo, Yakumo, etc.) as an "escalation" mod. If someone needs banned, then Pikkon or I can let the appropriate site mod know and they can do the actual banning. While many of the past troublemakers may have knowledge, very few of them have actually shared said knowledge in the forum itself. So I wouldn't bemoan the loss of anyone who couldn't follow the rules if the site did decide to take a stricter tone. -hl718 (P.S. - It's EIGHT, not THREE, wan5)
Yes stricter rules need to be applied, another thing if anyone has noticed is the contributing and other knowledgeable members simply don't post anymore in the 360 section, that says a lot right there.
All you need to do is put a little icon beside users names that change based on the amount of warnings someone has got. Once they reach a particular level, such as "Capt'n Jackass" then you have measurable and tangible grounds to ban them.
Also, to add further dis-intensive to get warnings, if you make the icons progressively more in your face (ie. Shameful to have marked on your account), then people will be less likely to accumulate them. It's the same way as how you can comment on some forums, but if you have 100+ thumbs down on your rating, no one is going to even listen to you. Some forums can even auto-block people with ratings less than a specific amount so you don't even see their posts.
Only problem is that most of the xbox forum would have this as there icon... PS. Sorry for the 3 buddy, il keep the 8 in mind for ya!
Heh, well that being said a simple comment ranking system would be enough. Provided users have the ability to set the minimum rankings a person must have before their comments become visible to them, nothing else should be needed. Provided your not being a tool and having everyone give you a -1 flag, your posts should be visible to all. Otherwise no one will see what you write, except perhaps the other tools who are now at your rank level (probably from arguing with you).
That, or just have be ridiculously simple. Put "X" icons under a persons name. Three X's and your out!
It was removed due to being off-topic. If you have something productive to contribute then please do so. If not, well, the door is over there. @ASSEMbler - Any thoughts on how you want to proceed with things? -hl718
Seems to me there are only really three or four people who are actually causing all of the trouble, like the guy who made these comments: Simply ban these people, the forum should clear up. Maybe then word will get out to all the other dipshits that no one here cares about their egos. Your "knowledge" is not needed, if you're going to act like a punk.
The thing that fascinates me the most is that all this bitching is almost exclusive in the 360 area of the forum. How come?
It's one of two things really: 1) Ego - People want the e-peen cred of saying "I know this and you don't." 2) Money - It's a current system and there is money to be made by people who hold exploits and don't share the knowledge (see the MW2 Prestige hack). I've found over the years that those that really know stuff are not the ones that seek a name for themselves. Those that strive to be known throughout the net are usually the ones who don't really know that much. And those looking for profit don't want anyone else to know what they know, else they can't charge as much for their services. -hl718
Well, the answer is to remove the posts and/or the people. How you want to do that is a different story however. If you take an approach like I suggested, with users being able to “rate†posts, then it's a naturally governing system as low ranked users posts don't show up for most people with filters set to “only high ranking usersâ€. If you decided to manually handle each case, it might be simpler to setup, but would require more micro management from the moderators.
Ranking can be abused. I would propose: First offense: warning. Second offense: removal of posting privilege for the 360 forum.
agreed, but the offense would need to be stated clearly\ i think this should be for personnel offenses, or just outright dickhead, rather than just stupidity.
