You hear everyone complaining about 360s dying, and after 5, I made the switch to the PS3. Fast forward almost a year (exact) forward, and now Im sitting here with a dead PS3, that, when it happens to actually start, goes for about 5 minutes before freezing. Last game I got to play was Assassins Creed, uninstalled its patch but that didnt do anything. When it does start, for those 5 minutes, everything looks grand, exactly how it should, until it freezes. Now Im stuck having to go through Sony, who Im sure will try to charge me to fix it (seeing as though I dont have a receipt, I dont know if that policy has changed). To think, i have an original 60 gig model that they probably dont have more of anyway, and a PS2 game waiting to be played. Just my luck really.
So much for the claim about PS3's being well built. I saw a few people on another forum complaining about USB ports dying on their consoles as well as some increasing Disc Read Error problems.
I had a few disk read errors with Assassins Creed, but just that, problem with the game and not the system in that case though.
yeah, how nice was the time 20y ago, when you could put in a cart or also a cd, and those systems still working almost perfectly today!!
My ps3 is still fine. I don't hear a whole lot of complaints about broken ps3. Actualy my 360 still works but I fear it wont last for ever. :S Actualy my complaint about this generation is normal maps and effects like it. Dear GOD TONE IT THE **** DOWN SOMETIMES. Kameo & Oblivion make me feel like someone is bashing my temples in with a hammer while i'm playing. I seriously now avoid all games with massive normal maps. depends on the system Nes (usa) - broken shit Japan got lucky
All consoles have faulty units, with the advent of cd/dvd based units the falure rate has soared. The 360 is by far the most likely unit to fail out for this gen. Then the wii then PS3. Till this gen I have never had a console fail....
Oh yes. Don't forget the PAL NES as well. that was just as shit. Here's Yakumo's guide to console build quality via the units that have been in my home (I have 3 brothers and a sister so that's a lot of consoles) Master System = Rock Solid NES = F*ing piss poor cartridge conectors resulting in flashing games or just a plain mess on screen. GameBoy = You could bomb this and it would still keep running! Game Gear = Pretty solid butt he screen scratched too easily. Mega Drive = Rock Solid Super Famicom = Rock Solid PC Engine = Rock Solid PC Engine Turbo Grafix = Rock Solid PC Engine Turbo Duo, Duo R and Duo RX = All have shit CD drives Neo Geo AES = Rock Sold Neo Geo CD = Rock Sold but you'd probably die before the game loaded. N64 = Rock Solid Sega Saturn = Rock Solid but the cart port is a bit on the crappy side. PlayStation = Bloody awful CD drive resulting in many faults. PlayStation 2 = Same again, shite CD/DVD Drives. Dreamcast = Pretty much Rock Solid apart from early systems having a reset problem due to heat. Game Cube = Rock Solid Wii = Rock Solid so far (1 year 2 months and counting) 360 = Shite isn't even the word. PlayStation 3 = no where near as bad as the other two consoles but still not what I'd call Rock Solid. So as you can see, from the age of 12 or so we've never been short of game consoles in the Smith residence  Yakumo
See but at least the CD drives, or NES port for that matter, are replaceable down the line if needed. These damn 360s and PS3s die, and thats it. Very few people can whip out chips and just pop it in and call it a day lol. Oh well, 1 replacement PS3 in a year vs 2 or 3 360s in the same time frame.
My PS3 gets use a lot, tons of stuff using the USB ports, gets transported in a suitcase (wrapped up in cel-aire) and works perfectly. Still not bought a Xbox 360 as they still seem to be built from foil and paper.
hey hey..come down:nod: those units are up to 18years old by now, and the white cd-rom (briefcase) celebrates its 20th A. this year! and this shit still works. not all of em though, how could they? but still a big bunch works fine. after 20 years!! that's what i call quality!! btw: how's about the diverse sega 16-bit cd-rom devices?
My personal experience: Genesis\Mega Drive: Seen a twitchy model 2, and a model 2 with a shot 7805, but model 1s seem to be tank-like Sega CD 2: My thrift store model is shit. Wouldn't read discs unless the cover was forcibly removed. SNES\SFC: Solid, apart from the DC in broke on mine. PSX: Actually no problems on my launch PAL model PS2: Again, no problems Dreamcast: Solid as ice Wii: Broked Gamecube: Solid N64: Solid 360: 27 days before RRoD, random crashes before then. PSP: Solid again DS: Solid All GB models: Solid GG: Twitchy cart port My first MD needed fixing once, just to repair one of the solder points near the DC in.
I'd dis-agree here. I have 4 broken Saturns, but still use my launch PSX regularly. Also, to be fair, the battery backup memory in the Saturn is an annoying design feature over time. No No No! I love the Gamecube, but it has been probably the most broken console I have ever had. I have gone through 5 Gamecubes (a mix of UK and NTSC/J) all which have died with DRE. Working in a Gamestore I noticed whenever a customer returned a GCN with DRE, they had all played Phantasy Star Online on it recently (which in the case of all my broken 'cubes, had been the last game I played on it...).
i too disagree about the playstation 1. still have my launch one, played intensively for 10 years, and so many of my friends. IMHO it's incredibly solid. also keep in mind that i have always kept it on the floor while playing
Only problems I have ever had with "any" consoles and I have most of what has already been discussed here Original launch day PS1, after quite a few years, a few games wouldn`t read, think laser slightly out of alignment Had a shoulder button go all intermittent on a SP Sticky drawer on a 360 Core And from my memory that`s it, so perhaps I am just lucky
i've NEVER had prbolems with consoles except my NES but i replaced the pin and its all good. All my consoles work like the day they came out...
I must have very bad luck with NEC's drives :banghead: Every one I have dies:crying: Hmm, I've only ever had one Mega CD 1 that was dead due to the laser coming off the tracks or something. The problem was that it sort of got damaged in shipping so it wasn't possible to put it back on the tracks. now the WonderMega (Just got another !!!) is rock solid for sure. Not to mention very sexy  Yakumo
My experience: Atari 2600: Flawless, but low quality controllers NES: Low quality console cartridge connectors Master System: Rock solid, but again controllers always stopped working MSX: No problems Mega Drive: Perfect GameGear: Always dies, sooner or later. Mine doesn't work anymore. GameBoy Advance: Looks too fragile, screen with no backlight (what they were thinking?) Saturn: Perfect PlayStation: Low quality CD drive PlayStation 2: Low quality construction, cheap quality CD/DVD drive controller GameCube: Plastic from the controllers like to crack
