RE1.5 was for PSX, RE0 was for GC, look at the memory card differences, to store items in a storage box, all you need are say 20 ID numbers and 20 quantities.
Compare that to using 'drop item' and you'd need to store ID for each individual dropped object and a quantity for things like ammo, then the room ID that they're located in, and the X and Y in the room for the map, and the view number they're in and the X and Y in that specific view.

Pretty sure it'd have been a bit too much for the PSX memory card.

    Nice screenshot!

Talking about earlier versions of RE 2.

After Gamesharking the Trial Edition (which i finally downloaded!), i wondered what the passage behind the stained-glass window in the Main Hall leads to...

the trial version sounds like a beta version of his eyes, not a crocodile.

On youtube there was a 1.5 BG computer that looked like the Nextstep/Openstep UI.

What I often wonder is where the Trial Edition fits into the development timeline. I think it's clear that it was from during the transition between 1.5 and 2, however Capcom might have simply left all that stuff in there on perpose, who knows? Obviously it runs on the RE2 engine instead of the RE1 engine, but it puzzles me why so much content remained inside the build after the switch.

Anyway, a lot of the artwork is different when compared to the retail build, the layout of the police station is slightly different, scenarios are believed to play out in different ways (thankfully reavealed by modding); Capcom deffinately had a different idea on what they were doing with the game at this stage of development. If those pictures of RE2 beta 1 up there are real, it would suggest beta 1 predates even the Trial Edition and might have been a part of what was an older deisgn for the police station, something of which traces can be seen in other areas of the build.

When you think about it though, if beta 1 predated the Trial Edition, just how beta was it? They couldn't have created very much, because even the Trial Edition is lacking in RE2 content (there's probably more RE1.5 content on there than there is RE2 content) it's bare bones enough as it is. Of course the image might just be fake... However it still intrigues me as to what part the Trial Edition played in the timeline. Is the Trial Edition beta 1? Or is the "beta 1" we know beta 1? The Trial Edition is an important piece of RE2 history, it probably has a lot more to tell than we know.

    My guess?

    1) Beta 1
    2) Trial Edition
    3) Beta 2 Claire
    4) Beta 2 Leon

And however many other builds the probably made inbetween.

Like i said... the image was never confirmed to be real... i don't even remember where i found that but it does look pretty real if you ask me. If it is real, then it just adds to more of the mystery because of how little we know about this "beta 1" . i really think a ton of those unused resident evil 2 background images found on the demo disc were used in " beta 1 " .... There was some guy who found quite a few re2 beta scene's by hacking it pretty hard. When leon first see's sherry in that one hall (where she normally crawls under the broken door)... he had somehow hacked it to find the scene where she crawls threw the vent and into the library (if you look at the background image of the library with no book shelfs you can see the vet on the very right). If its still on youtube i will post as i'm sure some of you have never seen it.

This is from the BH2 demo that came with RE:DC.... martinbiohazard somehow managed to active the scene with claire and sherry in a room you have to hack/gameshark to get into... Notice how the door at the very end of the hall if covered at the bottom, different from the original release. Sherry runs down the hall and disappears at the vent ( indicating she crawls threw the vent before they changed it to her crawling under the broken door )

Also here is another video of just the beta scene with Sherry when she crawls threw the vent... she runs up to the vent and disappears at the vent... He also walks up to the vent and clicks X and some wording comes up.
This stuff is pretty interesting !

EDIT: Here is another interesting beta scene that was most likley used in "beta 1" if there was one.... It's the beta scene with the police officer Marvin.... This scene was also found/unlocked in the demo version of biohazard 2... thanks to martinbiohazard.

    You bet...

Unused background comparisons by Robert Kendo

Shame that even some of the completed backgrounds' areas cannot be explored in-game (even when using the 'all doors unlocked' GS code). Probably because it lacks required data, like collision for instance.

I was just wondering, Alziare could probably answer this question easiest.... How many photos do we have of leon/elza in the hallways of the 2nd floor... if any?... if there is any could you post them here please. I looked around the photos i have access to and don't recall seeing any of the second floor hallways.... Or i just missed them. I seen irons office and the stair case. Also, do we have any images/footage of the basement/where ever the stairs heading downwards lead to.

You mean the staircase image of Elza at the B1 door? If not, I'd like to see the staircase image you're talking about. Should be no other legit images of it, but c2keo has made a couple staircase backgrounds that may be floating about.

Otherwise, there's not much footage of the upper floors of the RPD. There's the obvious Chief's Office and Helipad. Besides those, there are only a couple of hallway shots from the RPD upper floor(s), all from Inflames' (Bioflames) collection (except 1 magazine scan, lower left).

and (I forgot to add this to the first image):

Unfortunately, that's all there is. Well, there are a few images of some of the same exact camera angles with Leon in them instead of Elza or minor differences, but that's redundant for now. There are no images of the Medical Room (the backgrounds of a small autopsy-like medical room from the trial disc is NOT from 1.5), nor any of the Radio Room (c2keo's version of it is purely of his design) or the Media Room or any other hallways or rooms on the upper floor(s).

And yeah, there's a fair amount of official footage of the basement, and a few Inflames' ones. And the goromacida video showed a part of the main basement hall that had been unseen before. It's late now though, I'll post more of those later if I remember.
